The green peach aphid Myzus persicae(Sulzer), is known as the most important vector of potato leaf-roll virus and PVY. Yield of potato plants infested with these viruses are remarkably lower than non-infested plants. A study was conducted to investigate the life history of the green peach aphid at Suweon, Korea (Lat. $37^{\circ}$'N., Long. $126^{\circ}59$'E). The following were obtained: 1. Overwintering eggs hatched from late March to early April, with a hatching rate averaging ninety-five percent. 2. The fundatrigeniae leave the primary host(Punus persica) in early to mid May and migrate to the secondary hosts. 3. From mid to late Oct., the gymnoparae migrate from the secondary hosts to the primary hosts. 4. From early to mid Nov., gymnoparae lay fertilized eggs around buds, in bark crevices, or between bifurcated twigs of the primary hosts. 5. The early-born progeny have 23 generations and the late-born progeny have 9 generations on peach trees, potatoes and raddish from Apr. to Oct. 6. The average length of life was about 28.5 days, with a developmental period of approximate 10.8 days and a reproductive period of 15.8 days. 7. The average number of nymphs produced by a female was fifty, with a maximum number of 118. 8. The average number of nymphs produced by a female per day was about 3.2, with a maximum number of 13.
The occurrence and damage by the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck) were investigated on pear trees from 1996 to 2000 in the Naju, Korea. The number of overwintering larvae in pear trees considerably varied depending on the maturation time of varieties. The density of overwintering larvae on late cultivars such as Gamcheonbae and Okusankichi was high, but relatively low on early cultivars. Trunk and main branch of pear trees were main overwintering sites. In 1997, overwintering larvae began to pupate from middle February, and to emerge from late March. Male moths were caught in the sex pheromone traps from late March until early October with four peaks of flight in 1996~2000. In every generation larvae damaged both the shoots and fruits of pear tree, but the first and second generation larvae tended to damage mainly shoots, while most of the injured fruits were due to the third and fourth generation larvae. In pear fruits damaged by fruit moths, most of these were caused by oriental fruit moth larvae and none of pear fruits were damaged by peach fruit moth or pear fruit moth larvae in 1998~2000.
In order to provide basic data for the development of a controlled environment cultivation system and standardization of the structures, structural status and improvement methods were investigated for the fruit tree greenhouses of grape, pear, and peach. The greenhouses for citrus and grape cultivation are increasing while pear and persimmon greenhouses are gradually decreasing due to the advance of storage facilities. In the future, greenhouse cultivation will expand for the fruit trees which are more effective in cultivation under rain shelter and are low in storage capability. Fruit tree greenhouses were mostly complying with standards of farm supply type models except for a pear greenhouse and a large single-span peach greenhouse. It showed that there was no greenhouse specialized in each species of fruit tree. Frame members of the fruit tree greenhouses were mostly complying with standards of the farm supply type model or the disaster tolerance type model published by MIFAFF and RDA. In most cases, the concrete foundations were used. The pear greenhouse built with the column of larger cross section than the disaster tolerance type. The pear greenhouse had also a special type of foundation with the steel plate welded at the bottom of columns and buried in the ground. As the results of the structural safety analysis of the fruit tree greenhouses, the grape greenhouses in Gimcheon and Cheonan and the peach greenhouses in Namwon and Cheonan appeared to be vulnerable for snow load whereas the peach greenhouse in Namwon was not safe enough to withstand wind load. The peach greenhouse converted from a vegetable growing facility turned out to be unsafe for both snow and wind loads. Considering the shape, height and planting space of fruit tree, the appropriate size of greenhouses was suggested that the grape greenhouse be 7.0~8.0 m wide and 2.5~2.8 m high for eaves, while 6.0~7.0 m wide and 3.0~3.3 m of eaves height for the pear and peach greenhouses.

Occurrence and epidemiology of crown gall caused by A. tumefaciens in persimmon tree was investigated. Persimmon tree was more sensitive to crown gall disease than peach and jujube tree. Over 80% persimmon trees were infected to crown gall in all investigated region with no relation to planted years. Yield of infected tree was severely decreased to 54%. Incidence of crown gall in nursery field of persimmon tree was also severe and the infection rate of persimmon seedlings collected from market was 34%. It was guessed that the primary inoculum of crown gall caused by A. tumefaciens is infected persimmon seedlings.

Clearwing moths (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae) are economically important pests of fruit trees, such as apple, peach, and grape in Korea. Larvae feed on the phloem and cambium within tree branches of host plants. In this study, the seasonal fluctuation in male catches of four clearwing moths, Synanthedon haitangvora, S. bicingulata, Nokona regalis, and Glossosphecia romanovi, were monitored with the respective sex pheromone traps in Suwon for three years. In apple orchards, S. haitangvora males were captured from May to October, with two peaks in early June to middle June and late August to early September. Similarly, S. bicingulata males were trapped from May to October, with two peaks in late May and late August to middle September in peach orchards. In vineyards, N. regalis males were captured from late May to middle June with one peak in late May to early June, while G. romanovi males were trapped from early June to late July with one peak in late June to early July.
The study was performed to calculate canopy temperatures and crop water stress index (CWSI) of 2-year-old 'Yumi' peach trees using thermal infrared imaging under different soil water conditions, and to evaluate availability for water stress determination. Canopy temperatures showed similar daily variations to air temperatures and they were higher during the daytime than air temperatures. Canopy temperatures for 24 h were correlated highly to air temperatures (r2 =0.95), solar radiations (r2 =0.74), and relative humidity (r2 =-0.88). In addition, soil water potential showed a highly negative correlation to canopy temperatures (r2 =-0.57), temperature differences between leaf and air (TD) (r2 =-0.71), and CWSI (r2 =-0.72) during the daytime (11 to 16 h). CWSI for 24 h was highly related to canopy temperatures (r2 =0.90) and TD (r2 =0.92), whereas CWSI was not correlated to soil water potential (r2 =-0.27) for 24 h but related highly to water potential (r2 =-0.72) during the daytime (11 to 16 h). Correlation coefficients between CWSI (y) and soil water potential (x) were highest from 11 to 12 h and a regression equation was deduced as y = -0.0087x + 0.14. CWSI was calculated as 0.575 at -50 kPa, which soil water stress generally occurs. Thus our result suggests that this regression equation using thermal infrared imaging is useful to evaluate soil water stress of peach trees.

Land suitability assessments have been a crucial issue for enhancing productivity in agriculture and conserving agricultural lands. Based on soil and climate information, land suitability assessment for peaches (Prunus persica) and grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) were conducted using the maximum limiting characteristic method (MLCM) in South Korea. In peaches, S1 (highly suitable) exists on 2.21% of the land, S2 (moderately suitable) on 19.20%, N1 (currently not suitable) on 12.07%, and N2 (permanently not suitable) on the remaining 66.52%. In grapes, 3.65% of the land is classified as S1, 17.98% as S2, 11.85% as N1 and 66.52% as N2. In both fruit trees, the results acquired from soil and climatic information were similar to those from soil information alone. The data also suggest that the grades by soil information were relatively low over the land. With the assumption that the more suitable area a province has, the more will be cultivated for the fruit trees, we compared the percentages of area for peach and grape farming per province with the results by MLCM, and suggested that some provinces with a small percentage of farm can be encouraged to plant more in suitable areas as dictated by MLCM for the species. In the near future, we plan to use an advanced method such as analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to conduct similar tests, in which having reference data of yields or benefits per farm can efficiently increase the accuracy of the measurements.
Fruit rot and blister canker, a disease of apple occurring severely in Korea has been studied for correct identification of the syndrome In fruit and apple trees. Among the fungi isolated from blister cankers, rough barks or fruits showing rotting of 7 different host species were Botryosphaeria berengeriana (pycnidial stage. Dethiorella mali), Penicillium expansum and Alternaria sp. from apple rots and Phomopsis sp. from pear fruit rots. The most dominant isolates were B. berengeriana. Ten isolates of D. mali were grouped in to two conidial types based up mycelial growth rate, growth habits and mycelial coloration on PDA. None of 10 isolates was chromogenic. Pycnidia in apple stems, stromatic, dark brown, globose or subglobose and the measuring were $103.5-287.5{\mu}\times92.0-287.5\mu$. The pycnidia contained hyaline, nonseptate, fusiform conidia. The sizes of pycnidiospore of isolates obtained from apple twig were $4.3-7.2{\mu}\times20.0-31.5{\mu}(average\;5.9\times25.4\mu)$. Some conidia of this fungus from apple, pear, peach and ornamental cherry showed 1-,2-,3-septate before or during germination. Microconidia were observed in pycnidia on PDA and fruit lesion of inoculated host. Symptoms on leaves and fruits were contoured brown spots when inoculated. Wart-like protuberance were formed on the surface of apple and pear. Canker appeared on branches of peach and ornamental cherry inoculated.
Dominant aphid species and seasonal fluctuations of the colonizing aphids on apple tree, peach tree, and pear tree were examined without insecticide treatment during $1982{\sim}1984$ in Suweon. The dominant species among the colonizing aphids in each fruit tree were Myzus malisuctus in April-June and Aphis citricola in Aug.-Oct. on apple tree; Myzus persicae in early springtime and Hyalopterus pruni in May-Oct. on peach tree; Sappaphis piri in April-June, Oct. and Aphis citricola in July-Sept. on pear tree. M. malisuctus and A. citricola on apple tree showed 3 peaks a year; the former was early June, late Aug. and early Oct., the latter early June, middle Aug. and late Sept. M. persicae on peach tree showed peak on late May to early June, and H. pruni on middle June and middle Oct. S. piri and A. citricola on pear tree showed 2 peaks a year; the former was late May and late Oct., the latter early June and early Sept.

This research has conducted historical data analysis and on-site investigation on Chungam Pavilion and Seokchun Valley in Bonghwa. Based on the results, the original planting form was identified, and the vegetation management were drawn up. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First of all, The Book of Seokchun states that there used to be forest trees such as pine tree, saw-leaf zelkova and maple tree, and flowering trees such as peony, royal azalea, rose, chrysanthemum, and lotus, planted around Chungamjeong. Around Seokchunjeongsa, there used to be boxwood, bamboo, maple, peach, gooseberry and peony planted in the area. Through this discovery it can be realized that the vicinity of Chungam Pavilion and Seokchunjeongsa provided not only the grand aesthetics of four clear seasons, but also planting landscapes with various symbolistic significance and meanings. The description of the planting situation in the historical records offers a useful reference for future vegetation management in Chungam Pavilion, Seokchunjeongsa and surrounding valleys. Furthermore, it holds critical value in the identification of planting pattern in late Chosun dynasty. Second, the planting landscape in and around Chungam Pavilion and Seokchunjeongsa will have to be maintained as described in the historical records The Book of Seokchun. Also, the once famous colony of pine trees in the area is gradually reducing in its scale, which calls for active management measures such as elimination of broadleaf trees.
