  • We present a novel electrochemical method to fabricate a single Pd nanowire based on direct current assisted dielectropheresis (DEP) process between two predefined metal electrodes. The electrochemical methods was investigated as functions of frequency and voltage for optimal growth conditions of Pd nanowire. The synthesized Pd nanowire have a good resistance of $1\;k{\Omega}$, diameters of several hundred nanometers on average and lengths of $8\;{\mu}m$. Finally, the single Pd nanowire was capable of detecting hydrogen in the concentration range from 100 to 2500 ppm with high sensitivity and response time, thus demonstrating its suitability for use as a hydrogen sensor.

  • Ag- and Pd-loaded $SnO_2$ nanowire network sensors were prepared by the growth of $SnO_2$ nanowires via thermal evaporation, the coating of slurry containing $SnO_2$ nanowires, and dropping of a droplet containing Ag or Pd nanoparticles, and subsequent heat treatment. All the pristine, Pd-loaded and Ag-loaded $SnO_2$ nanowire networks showed the selective detection of $C_2H_5OH$ with low cross-responses to CO, $H_2$, $C_3H_8$, and $NH_3$. However, the relative gas responses and gas selectivity depended closely on the catalyst loading. The loading of Pd enhanced the responses($R_a/R_g$: $R_a$: resistance in air, $R_g$: resistance in gas) to CO and $H_2$ significantly, while it slightly deteriorated the response to $C_2H_5OH$. In contrast, a 3.1-fold enhancement was observed in the response to 100 ppm $C_2H_5OH$ by loading of Ag onto $SnO_2$ nanowire networks. The role of Ag catalysts in the highly sensitive and selective detection of $C_2H_5OH$ is discussed.

  • The structural and magnetic properties of functionalized carbon chains doped with 4d transition metals, such as Ru, Rh, and Pd, were investigated using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. The carbon nanowire doped with Ru exhibited a ferromagnetic ground state with a sizable magnetic moment, while those doped with Rh and Pd had nonmagnetic ground states. For the Ru-doped chain, the density of states at the Fermi level showed large spin polarization, which suggests that the doped nanowire could be used for spintronic applications.

  • In this paper, we report on an investigation of highly sensitive sensing performance of a hydrogen sensor composed of palladium (Pd) nanowires. The Pd nanowires have been grown by electrodeposition into nanochannels and liberated from the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template by dissolving in an aqueous solution of NaOH. A combination of photo-lithography, electron beam lithography and a lift-off process has been utilized to fabricate the sensor using the Pd nanowire. The hydrogen concentrations for 2% and 0.1% were obtained from the sensitivities (${\Delta}R/R$) for 1.92% and 0.18%, respectively. The resistance of the Pd nanowires depends on absorption and desorption of hydrogen. Therefore, we expect that the Pd nanowires can be applicable for detecting highly sensitive hydrogen gas at room temperature.

  • The combination of focused ion beam (FIB) and 4 point probe nanomanipulator could make various nano manufacturing and electrical measurements possible. In this study, we manufactured individual ZnO nanowire devices and measured those electrical properties. In addition, tensile experiments of metallic Au and Pd nanowires was performed by the same directional alignment of two nanomanipulators and a nanowire. It was confirmed from I-V curves that Ohmic contact is formed between electrodes and nanomanipulators, which is able to directly measure the electrical properties of a nanowire itself. In the mechanical tensile test, Au and Pd nanowires showed a totally different fracture behavior except the realignment from <110> to <002>. The deformation until the fracture was governed by twin for Au and by slip for Pd nanowires, respectively. The crystallographic relationship and fracture mechanism was discussed by TEM observations.

  • Networked $SnO_2$ nanowires were uniformly functionalized with Pd nanoparticles via ${\gamma}$-ray radiolysis. The Networked $SnO_2$ nanowires were fabricated through a selective growth method. The sensing properties of the Pd-functionalized $SnO_2$ nanowires were analyzed in terms of their response to $NO_2$ and CO gases. The response time and sensitivity of the sensors were significantly improved for $NO_2$ at lower temperatures by the Pd functionalization. The enhancement in the sensing properties is likely to be due to the spillover effect of the Pd nanoparticles.

  • Pd-functionalized ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ nanowires are synthesized by thermal evaporation of Bi powder using VLS mechanism followed by Pd coating and annealing. In this study, sensing properties of Pd-functionalized ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ nanowires sensor to selected concentrations of $NO_2$ gas were examined. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the nanowires with diameters in a range of 100 - 200 nm and lengths of up to a few tens of micrometers. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed that the products corresponded to the nanowires of ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ crystals and Pd nanoparticles. Pd-functionalized ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ nanowires sensor showed an enhanced sensing performance to $NO_2$ gas compared to as-synthesized ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ nanowires sensor. As synthesized and Pd-functionalized ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ nanowire sensors showed responses of 178% - 338% and 196% - 535% at $300^{\circ}C$, respectively, to 0.05 - 2 ppm $NO_2$. In addition, the underlying mechanism of the enhancement of the sensing properties of ${\beta}-Bi_2O_3$ nanowires by Pd-functionalization is discussed.

  • This review covers recent developments in our group regarding the synthesis, characterization and applications of single-crystalline one-dimensional nanostructures based on a wide range of material systems including noble metals, metal silicides and metal germanides. For the single-crystalline one-dimensional nanostructures growth, we have employed chemical vapor transport approach without using any catalysts, capping reagents, and templates because of its simplicity and wide applicability. Au, Pd, and Pt nanowires are epitaxially grown on various substrates, in which the nanowires grow from seed crystals by the correlations of the geometry and orientation of seed crystals with those of as-grown nanowires. We also present the synthesis of numerous metal silicide and germanide 1D nanostructures. By simply varying reaction conditions, furthermore, nanowires of metastable phase, such as $Fe_5Si_3$ and $Co_3Si$, and composition tuned cobalt silicides (CoSi, $Co_2Si$, $Co_3Si$) and iron germanides ($Fe_{1.3}Ge$ and $Fe_3Ge$) nanowires are synthesized. Such developments can be utilized as advanced platforms or building blocks for a wide range of applications such as plasmonics, sensings, nanoelectronics, and spintronics.
