New Haplotypes of the ATP Synthase Subunit 6 Gene of Mitochondrial DNA are Associated with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Saudi Arabia

  • Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer diagnosed in children and represents approximately 25% of cancer diagnoses among those younger than 15 years of age. Aim and Objectives: This study investigated substitutions in the ATP synthase subunit 6 gene of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) as a potential diagnostic biomarker for early detection and diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Based on mtDNA from 23 subjects diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, approximately 465 bp of the ATP synthase subunit 6 gene were amplified and sequenced. Results: The sequencing revealed thirty-one mutations at 14 locations in ATP synthase subunit 6 of mtDNA in the ALL subjects. All were identified as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with a homoplasmic pattern. The mutations were distributed between males and females. Novel haplotypes were identified in this investigation: haplotype (G) was recorded in 34% in diagnosed subjects; the second haplotype was (C) with frequency of 13% in ALL subjects. Neither of these were observed in control samples. Conclusions: These haplotypes were identified for the first time in acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients. Five mutations able to change amino acid synthesis for the ATP synthase subunit 6 were associated with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This investigation could be used to provide an overview of incidence frequency of acute lyphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in Saudi patients based on molecular events.

재조합 Saccharomyces cerevisiae에서 Invertase의 발현에 대한 Sucrose의 영향 (Effects of Sucrose on Invertase Expression in Recombinant Saccharornyces cerevisiae)

  • Sucrose에 의한 재조합 Saccharomyces cerevisiae의 invertase 생성 양성을 이단계 배양을 통하여 관찰하였다. 포도당 배지에서 SUC2 유전자의 발현이 억제된 상태에서 발현배지의 sucrose 농도가 2$g/\ell$일 경우 invertase 최대 비역가는 10 units로 5$g/\ell$보다 40% 향상된 값을 보여주었다. 발현배지에서의 당의 농도변화와 invertase 발현은 서로 대응관계가 있음을 발견하였다. 초기에는 SUC2 유전자가 발현되어 invertase가 생성 분비되어서 배지중 sucrose를 포도당과 과당으로 분해하였다. 분해된 포도당의 농도가 2$g/\ell$ 이상이 되면 invertase 생성은 다시 억제되었다. 동시에 미생물에 생육에 의해 포도당 농도가 2$g/\ell$이하로 감소되면서 다시 invertase 생성이 유도되었다. 이러한 현사은 5$g/\ell$의 sucrose 배지에서 더욱 현저하게 관찰 할 수 있었다. 발현배지의 온도를 $35^{\circ}C$증가시켰을 경우 invertase 생성은 $30^{\circ}C$보다 약 1.7배만큼 증가하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 MZR 디스크의 특성과 VOD에서 사용자들의 접근 편기성을 고려한 비디오 블록의 효율적 배치방법을 제안한다. 또 제안된 방법에 대하여 VOD 서버의 모델링과 모의실험을 통하여 성능을 평가하였다. 기본적인 방법은 인기도에 따라 Zipf 분포를 고려하여 MZR 디스크상에 선형배치나 편기된 휴리스틱(SH) 방법으로 배치시키는 것이다. 제안된 방법의 타당성을 검증하기 위해서, 2 대의 디스크를 설치한 워크스테이션에서 다양한 편기요인 하에서의 성능을 실험하였다. 실험결과 여기에서 제시한 방법이 임의배치 방법보다 좋은 성능을 보여주고 있음을 알 수 있다. 디스크 그룹으로 배치방법을 확장하기 위하여 동시에 지원 가능한 최대 사용자 수와 사용자당 필요한 버퍼의 크기를 분석하였다. 제안된 방법의 수행력에 관련한 변수로는 디스크헤드 스케쥴링 방법, 배치방법, 스트라이핑 단위 등을 고려하였으며 실험결과 본 논문에서 제시한 방법이 효율적임을 알 수 있다.

CDMA2000 1X용으로 구현된 스마트 안테나 기지국 시스템의 성능분석 (Performance Analysis of Smart Antenna Base Station Implemented for CDMA2000 1X)

  • 본 논문에서는 CDMA2000 1X용 스마트 안테나 기지국을 구현하고 기지국 각 모듈의 구조와 새로운 기능을 소개한다. 구현된 스마트 안테나 기지국은 배열안테나, 주파수 상/하향 변환기, ADC/DAC, 확산기/역확산기, 길쌈 부호기/비터비 복호기, 탐색기, 추적기, 빔포머, 캘리브레이션(calibration) 등 여러 종류의 서브 시스템으로 구성되는 복합 시스템이다. 캘리브레이션 과정을 거친 후 순방향과 역방향 링크에서 원하는 빔패턴이 생성됨을 실험을 통해서 확인하였다. 또한, 본 논문의 스마트 안테나 기지국에 채택된 적응 알고리즘이 가입자당 4개의 핑거를 지원하는데 충분한 속도와 정확성을 가짐을 확인 하였으며, PCS 대역의 상용 단말기를 사용한 실험을 통해 제안된 스마트 안테나 기지국이 기존의 다이버시티 기지국에 비해 우수한 성능을 가짐을 FER(Frame Error Rate)로 확인하였다.

우세우심실 또는 우단심실증에서의 변형 Fontan 수술 (Modified Fontan Procedure for Single or Dominant Right Ventricle)

  • Between April 1986 and September 1990, 34 patients with a single or dominant right ventricle underwent modified Fontan procedure for definite palliation in Seoul National University Children`s Hospital. Their age at operation ranged from 8 months to 14 years [Mean 5.5 years]. The ventricular chamber was solitary and of indeterminate trabecular pattern in 6 patients. 28 patients had posteriorly located rudimentary chamber, all of which were trabecular pouches having no communication with outlet septum. The patterns of atrioventricular connection were common inlet[9], double inlet [11], left atrioventricular valve atresia [12] and right atrioventricular valve atresia with L-loop [2]. Pulmonary outflow tracts were atretic in 7 patients and stenotic in 26 patients. Major associated anomalies included anomalous systemic venous drainage [15], dextrocardia [12] and total anomalous pulmonary venous connection[3]. Shunt operations were previously performed in 13 patients and pulmonary artery banding and atrial septectomy in 1 patients. Surgery included intraatrial baffling in 26 patients, bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt in 13 patients, atrioventricular valve obliteration in 3 patients and atrioventricular valve replacement in 3 patients. Central venous pressure measured postoperatively at intensive care unit ranged from 18cm H2O to 28cm H2O [mean 23.2cm H2O]. Hospital mortality was 35.3% [12/34], all died out of low output syndrome. Suspected causes of low output syndrome include ventricular dysfunction [8], hypoplastic or tortuous pulmonary artery [2] and elevated pulmonary vascular resistance [2]. 19 patients had 31 major complications including low output syndrome [18], arrhythmia [4], acute renal failure [3] and respiratory failure [3]. Mortality rate was significantly higher in the groups receiving intraatrial baffling and AV valve replacement respectively [p<0.05]. 20 patients were followed up postoperatively with the mean follow-up period 15.0$\pm$11.6 months. There were no late death and follow-up catheterization was performed in 10 patients. Mean right atrial pressure was 15.4$\pm$6.8mmHg and ventricular contraction was reasonable in all but one case. Thus, Fontan principle can be applied successfully to all the patients with complex cardiac anomaly of single ventricle variety and better results can be anticipated with judicious selection of patient and improvement of postoperative care.

Normal Human Pleural Surface Area Calculated by Computed Tomography Image Data

  • Background; Pleural micro-metastasis of lung cancer is detected by touch print cytology or pleural lavage cytology, but its prognostic impact has not elucidated yet. We hypothesize that recurrence may depend on the amount of tumor cells disseminated in pleural cavity, if the invasiveness of all cancer is the same. To predict the amount of tumor cells disseminated in pleural cavity, we need pleural surface area, distributed pattern of cells and concentration of cells per unit area. Human pleural surface area has not reported yet. In this report, we calculate the normal human pleural surface area using CT image data processing. Methods; Twenty persons were checked CT scan, and we obtained the data from each image. In order to calculate the pleural surface, the outline of lung was firstly extruded from CT image data using home-made Digitizer program. And the distance between CT images was calculated from the extruded outline. Finally a normal human pleural surface was calculated from function between the distance of consecutive CT images and the calculated length. Results; Their mean age is $65{\pm}12$ years old (range $26{\sim}77$), body weight is $62{\pm}9\;kg\;(48{\sim}80)$, and height is $167{\pm}6\;cm\;(156{\sim}176)$. The number of images used is $36{\pm}7\;(24{\sim}51)$. Pleural surface area is $211,888{\pm}35,756\;mm^2\;(143,880{\sim}279,576)$. Right-side pleural surface area is $107,932\;mm^2$ and Lt is $103,955\;mm^2$. Costal, mediastinal and diaphragmatic surfaces of right-side pleura are $77,483\;mm^2,\;39,057\;mm^2,\;and\;8,608\;mm^2$ respectively, and left-side are $72,497\;mm^2,\;35,578\;mm^2,\;and\;4,120\;mm^2$ respectively. Conclusion; Normal human pleural surface area is calculated using CT image data at first and the result is about $0.212\;m^2$.

현금흐름을 포함하는 회분식 공정-저장조 망구조의 최적설계 (Optimal Design Of Batch-Storage Network with Financial Transactions and Cash Flows)

  • This paper presents an integrated analysis of production and financing decisions. We assume that a cash storage unit is installed to manage the cash flows related with production activities such as raw material procurement, process operating setup, Inventory holding cost and finished product sales. Temporarily financial investments are allowed for more profit. The production plant is modeled by the Batch-Storage Network with Recycle Streams in Yi and Reklaitis (2003). The objective function of the optimization is minimizing the opportunity costs of annualized capital investment and cash/material inventory while maximizing stockholder's benefit. No depletion of all the material and cash storage units is major constraints of the optimization. A novel production and inventory analysis formulation, the PSW(Periodic Square Wave) model, provides useful expressions for the upper/lower bounds and average level of the cash and material inventory holdups. The expressions for the Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the optimization problem can be reduced to two subproblems and analytical lot sizing equations under a mild assumption about the cash flow pattern of stockholder's dividend. The first subproblem is a separable concave minimization network flow problem whose solution yields the average material flow rates through the networks. The second subproblem determines the decisions about financial Investment. Finally, production and financial transaction lot sizes and startup times can be determined by analytical expressions as far as the average flow rates are calculated. The optimal production lot and storage sizes considering financial factors are smaller than those without such consideration. An illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the results obtainable using this approach.

Prognostic Relevance of Human Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase (hTERT) Expression in Patients with Gall Bladder Disease and Carcinoma

  • Background: Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) has been stated as an Indian disease, with the highest number of cases being reported from certain districts of northeast India, which has an ethnically distinct population. Unfortunately there are no scientific reports on the underlying molecular mechanisms associated with the pathogenesis of the disease from this region. Aim: The present study evaluated the role of differential expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) in the development of gall bladder anomalies. Materials and Methods: Blood and tissue samples were collected from patients undergoing routine surgical resection for clinically proven cases of gallbladder disease {cholelithiasis (CL, n=50), cholecystitis (CS, n=40) and GBC (n=30) along with adjacent histopathologically proved non-neoplastic controls (n=15)} with informed consent. Whole blood was also collected from age and sex matched healthy controls (n=25) for comparative analysis. Differential hTERT mRNA expression was evaluated by semi-quantitative rt-PCR and real-time PCR based analysis using ${\beta}$-actin as an internal control. Evaluation of differential hTERT protein expression was studied by Western blot analysis and immunoflourescence. Statistical analysis for differential expression and co-relation was performed by SPSSv13.0 software. Results: Gallbladder anomalies were mostly prevalent in females.   • 본 논문은 H.264나 MPEG4등, 다양한 영상압축 코덱을 지원할 수 있는 ME ASIP의 전용 IME 명령어와 재구성 가능한 하드웨어 구조를 제안한다. 제안하는 전용의 명령어와 하드웨어 가속기는 HD급의 고화질 영상을 지원할 수 있는 성능을 가지고 있다. 제안하는 IME명령어는 다수의 병렬 연산과 패턴 정보를 이용한 연산기 제어를 통하여 전역탐색을 비롯한 각종 고속 탐색 알고리즘을 지원한다. 제안한 하드웨어 구조는 256개의 Processor Elements로 구성되어 있는 Processor Element Group (PEG) 하나당 77,860 게이트를 가진다. 16개의 PEG로 구성된 ASIP은 160MHz의 동작 주파수를 가지고 있으며, HD급 1080p의 해상도를 가지는 영상을 실시간으로 동작 시킬 수 있다.

피라미드형 내부구조재를 가지는 중공형 접합판재의 성형특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Forming Characteristic of Inner Pyramid Structure Bonded Sheet Metal)

  • The inner-structure bonded(ISB) sheet metal is defined as a composite sheet metal which has middle layer of truss-structure between two skin sheets. The characteristics such as ultra-light weight, high rigidity, high strength, etc are required especially for automobile parts. The characteristic of ISB sheet metal depends on inner-structure pattern or method of bonding. Pyramid type of crimped expanded metal is used for inner-structure and both of resistance welding and adhesive bonding are applied to make a specimen. As a result of compression test, it is appeared that forming limit is 10% reduction in thickness under a load of 8kgf per unit element(one inner-structure). In case of uniaxial tensile test the non-uniform surface integrity rather than the buckling of inner-structure happened at a load of 450kgf, which indicates elongation of 7.2% and thickness reduction of 13%. The eye-inspection method was applied to examine the defects occurring on the specimen during stretch forming. In case of biaxial stretch forming only the non-uniform deformation on the surface of a skin sheet could be observed. The forming limit in stretching of ISB sheet metal with the hemi-spherical punch of 150mm in diameter was 3mm in forming depth and 5% reduction in thickness.
