  • This study analyzes medical clothing trends and provides future directions for research. Based on 38 patents in Korea and 221 patents in the USA, the contents of patents were analyzed by year, subject, clothing type, and specific content. The results are as follows. The number of patent applications in Korea and the USA was found to be increasing. The distribution by subject was in the order of patient clothing, medical personnel clothing, and materials for medical clothing. Clothing of various types such as upper garment, bottoms, pajamas, gowns, and jump-suits were observed in patient clothing comparatively. However, gowns occupied a higher portion in medical personnel clothing. Patents in the USA related to patient clothing included patient clothing that provided examination convenience, monitoring patient clothing, patient clothing revising appearance, and patient clothing that assisted in movement. Korean patents related to patient clothing include functional patient clothing, patient clothing providing examination convenience, clothing for Alzheimer patients, and monitoring patient clothing. Many of the patents related to medical personnel clothing were about surgery gowns and mainly concerned with developments related to devices that allows putting on gowns while maintaining a sterile state and functionality to prevent liquid permeation. Regarding materials for medical clothing, there were many applications on breathability and liquid impermeable materials.

Therefore, the clothing for patients has to be comfortable and functional as well as well designed. Also correct sizes, suitable materials and convenient fastening devices are features to be considered for proper patient's clothing. However the currently used patient's clothing is provided without sufficient considerations for patient's needs, and is more concerned with price competitiveness. The purpose of this survey was to find out which design and functional features of patient's clothing are favored by patients, doctors and nurses. The results will be useful to develop improved patient's clothing. Based on the results, the following suggestions for improved patient's clothing are made. 1. Gender differentiation and a greater variety of size codes are required for better fit. 2. Depending on various treatments, different functional design features have to be applied. 3. Aesthetic needs should be satisfied for the psychological comfort of patients. 4. • The purpose of this study is to develop clothing customized for dealing with patients with severe dementia. Based on the results of previous studies, The research patient clothing was designed to reduce the physical fatigue experienced by caregivers when dressing and undressing patients by changing the position and shape of the split in the patient's clothing. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods to measure the extent to which these modifications improved the ease of dressing and undressing the research patient. The research patient clothing was developed by moving the rear-center zipper to the side and changing the zipper from being half-open to fully open. Muscle energy consumption and fatigue generation were analyzed using EMG signals at the following sites: brachioradialis, biceps, triceps, anterior deltoid, medial deltoid, posterior deltoid, upper trapezius and erector spinae. Results indicated that the modified research patient clothing required less muscle energy and the occurrence of muscle fatigue decreased overall compared to traditional patient clothing. This was supported by the qualitative subjective evaluation, which revealed that dressing and undressing was easier with the modified clothing. In conclusion, repositioning of the back zipper to the side and the fully open slit shape significantly reduced caregiver fatigue when dressing and undressing patients.
