  • This study was carried out to assess the present condition of domestic and foreign patented technologies in turfsrass cultivar area. Patented technologies about turfsrass were analyzed by web site(www.kipris.or.kr) from 1948 to 2005. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Number of patents on turfgrass fertilizer(866) was more than the other patents on turfgrass. 2. Total number of Japan's patents on turfgrass was 1,565. This is more than America's. The foreign patents are mostly on cultivar, sod, seed, disease, construction, and management. 3. Number of patents from company(2,328) was the most and the others are private individuals, research institutes, university professors. However commercialization rate of patants was low. 4. Turfgrass cultivars patented in Korea are 'Konwoo', 'Senock' 'Anyanjungji', etc., and in foreign countries 'Zenith', 'Miyako', etc. Among them 'Zenith', 'Miyako' and 'Konhee' were commercialized.

  • Although domestic research funding organizations require patented technologies as an outcome of financial aids, they have much difficulty in evaluating qualitative value of the patented technology due to lack of systematic methods. Especially, because citation data is not essential to patent application in Korea, it is very difficult to evaluate a patent using the incomplete citation data. This study proposes a method for evaluating technology importance of a patent when there is no or insufficient citation data in patents. The technology importance of a patent can be evaluated objectively and quantitatively by the proposed method which consists of 5 steps such as selection of a target patent, collection of related patents, preparation of key word vector, clustering patents, and technological importance assessment. The method was applied to a patent on 'user identification method for payment using mobile terminal' in order to evaluate technology importance and demonstrate how the method works.

  • In 1997, Dr. James Chien-Min Sung patented the technology of making diamond tools according to a predetermined pattern. The optimization of this pattern may double the tool life and the cutting speed. In 1998, Sung also made $DiaGrid^{(R)}$ saw segments that showed superior performance in cutting granite and marble. In 2000, Sung visited Shinhan and introduced them this revolutionary concept of diamond saw segments. In 2005, Shinhan adapted the idea and produced saw segments with diamond grits set in a predetermined pattern, their results confirmed that the sawing speed and the sawing life were both improved over conventional designs.

  • A citation-based method of estimating the life span of a patented technology is proposed In this study. The suggested framework Includes : (1) estimation of citation frequency of an individual patent within a technology group. (2) calculation of a mutual citation frequency between citing patent and cited patents, (3) calculation of the period for cited patents from the year of registration to the year of being cited most recently and (4) description for technology group using descriptive statistics such as mean, median, mode, etc. The framework suggested in this study was applied to the US patent data between 1976 and 2004 for 5 communications areas.

  • Technology developers in academia tend to be short of professional knowledge and recognition of technology transfer strategies. It is even severe in Korea where the concept of employee's invention has just started to effect in academia. Wasteful contract negotiation disputes cannot only be painful but also can hamper better invention. The main purpose of this paper is to design guidelines for an optimal contract strategy for technology transfer from the perspective of the technology developer in academia, the intermediary and the receiver. Applying conjoint analysis, this study shows not only the relative importance of the attributes related to the technology transfer contract but also the most important conditions of the contract. It is expected that this study may improve the efficiency of technology transfer activities in academia in Korea.

  • Existing gas fired burners work in the medium wave IR range at $1000^{\circ}C$ and an energy density of $200kW/m^{2}$. The patented porous burner technology reaches the short wave IR spectrum ($1450^{\circ}C$) and comes up to an energy density of $1000kW/m^{2}$. This technology is of great interest for various applications in paper industry. Speeding up existing coating lines can be realized without a major revamp of the line. Main characteristics of this new developed technology enable a better process control. In this paper the porous burner technology for paper industry is evaluated.

  • This study was carried out to introduce a couple of commercialized patented technologies in the area of turfgrass production. All sod production related patents in Korea during the period from Dec. 20, 1948 to Dec. 30, 2005 were reviewed. Details of two patents (patent No. 0434389 and 0478194) were included. The results are summarized as follows: 1. One of the domestic patents on sod production was the technique using natural and plastic films. Information on topsoil mixtures was also reviewed form foreign patents. 2. Patented multi-purpose sowing equipment can evenly mix soil, sand, fertilizer and other soil conditioners with seed, stolen and rhizome of turfgrass. 3. Patent on cool-season turfgrass sod production provide topsoil mixture combination and mixing ratio for sports field, landscape area and roof garden.

  • This study analyzes current technologies in personal protective equipment (PPE) and mechanisms that can be used in the agricultural field to provide data for research and development on PPE for farmers. There is growing awareness of the importance of PPE as part of efforts to reduce agricultural accidents, but data remain rare for developing PPE tailored to the farm work environment. In this regard, patent data on PPE can provide useful insights for facilitating relevant technologies and research. This study examines patents and utility models classified under the IPC code in Korea and other countries to analyze patented technologies and recent trends for the period from January 2003 to October 2014. Here Korea, the U.S., Japan, and Europe were considered. The results show that the number of patent applications for PPE remained steady without any sharp fluctuations. KIPO applications accounted for 43.5% of all cases, reflecting the highest proportion among the countries considered. Domestic applicants accounted for 94% of all cases. In Korea, patent applications were concentrated in safety gear for the face and eyes, indicating a high level of technology. The highest level of competition was observed for safety goggles in all countries. Some PPE technologies were dominated by a particular manufacturer. The analysis results for farming-related technologies show the current state of technologies and areas lacking technological development. This study analyzes patented technologies for PPE in Korea and other countries and recent research trends as part of the effort to develop PPE for workers in the farming and livestock industry. This study represents an early-stage effort to develop PPE for workers in the farming and livestock industry, and the results are expected to be useful for tailoring PPE to Korea's farming and livestock environment.
