  • The most common abnormality of the umbilicus in the foal is the patent urachus. Patent urachus may be a congenital or acquired condition in foals in which the urachus fails to close spontaneously at or shortly after parturition. A 17-day-old male Thoroughbred foal was requested to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of Cheju National University. The foal showed clinical signs such as umbilical urination, anorexia, depression, lethargy, and abdominal pain for 10 days. Because of the umbilical urination, the surgery for patent urachus was performed, but he died next day. Grossly, many pale yellowish foci 10-20 mm in diameter were scattered on the throughout surface of lungs. Severe subcapsular hemorrhage was observed in left kidney. Large milky yellow mass 10X6-7 cm in size was found in the adjacent area of right kidney. Histopathologically, many abscesses with bacterial cocci were scattered in the blood vessels or adjacent pulmonary parenchyma of lungs. Severe numerous abscesses with intralesional bacterial cocci were mostly occupied in the abdominal mass from right kidney. Gram staining for tissue sections demonstrated numerous Gram positive cocci in pulmonary and abdominal abscesses. In bacterial culture, catalase-positive beta-hemolytic colonies were isolated and confirmed as Staphylococcus (S.) aureus by Vitek system. Based on the results, acquired patent urachus and then multiple abscesses may be originated from the umbilical cord infected with S. aureus in this foal.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to share our experience of transcatheter closure of small patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) by using an Amplatzer vascular plug (AVP). Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 20 patients who underwent transcatheter closure at Samsung Medical Center and Sejong General Hospital from January 2008 to August 2012. The size and shape of the PDAs were evaluated by performing angiograms, and the PDA size and the AVP devices size were compared. Results: The mean age of the patients was $54.9{\pm}45.7$ months old. The PDAs were of type C (n=5), type D (n=12), and type E (n=3). The mean pulmonary end diameter of the PDA was $1.7{\pm}0.6$ mm, and the aortic end diameter was $3.6{\pm}1.4$ mm. The mean length was $7.3{\pm}1.8$ mm. We used 3 types of AVP devices: AVP I (n=5), AVP II (n=7), and AVP IV (n=8). The ratio of AVP size to the pulmonary end diameter was $3.37{\pm}1.64$, and AVP size/aortic end ratio was $1.72{\pm}0.97$. The aortic end diameter was significantly larger in those cases repaired with AVP II than in the others (P=0.002). The AVP size did not significantly correlate with the PDA size, but did correlate with smaller ratio of AVP size to aortic end diameter ($1.10{\pm}0.31$, P=0.032). Conclusion: Transcatheter closure of small PDA with AVP devices yielded satisfactory outcome. AVP II was equally effective with smaller size of device, compared to others.

In this paper, we analyzed the market size and technology trend of mobile mapping market in Korea and abroad, and analyzed frequency, trend, and characteristics of MMS related patents. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, it is expected that the domestic and overseas mobile mapping market will continue to grow in the future, and MMS-related technologies and applications are rapidly developing. Active research and development investment is required to preoccupy future market through technology development and patent competition. Second, the frequency of filing domestic patents is highly correlated with the results of national R&D, and industrial patent applications are highly related to national projects. It is analyzed as the result of introduction of preemptive technologies and research and development of companies for preemption in related industry rather than market development. Lastly, in Korean geospatial information industry survey, It is necessary to maintain the data so that it can be compared with the data of foreign institutions. In particular, statistical data that can grasp the market size in terms of geospatial information utilization and technical aspects are desperately needed.

  • Utilizing intra-day volume weighted average price (VWAP) based on 1 minute return data of stocks traded on the Korean Stock Exchange, this paper examines and analyzes abnormal returns in reaction to patent listing disclosures as well as the cumulative abnormal returns, traded volumes, the interaction of VWAP spreads, the reaction of volumes, the reaction of VWAP spreads and the realized returns obtained from trading using an event driven arbitrage strategy. The results of the aforementioned research topics are follows. First, our analysis suggests that on average, 0.92% positive cumulative returns arise 1 minute after the patent listing disclosure announcement with high statistical significance, thereby reconfirming that the Korean stock market is a semi-strong form of the efficient market. Employing 3 separate panel tests differentiated by the size factor, we find that the abnormal returns of small sized stocks were less than the returns of medium sized stocks, which goes to support recent research findings suggesting that the size premium is no longer existent in the Korean stock market. Secondly, we show that among the event driven type strategies, the most outstanding realized returns are from the market making strategies. Furthermore, placing market order trades only at the bid or ask price resulted in negative returns. This implies that strategies utilizing a combination of market orders and limit orders, order cancelations ratios and order flows can enhance realized returns.

  • Although the business model(BM) patents act as a creative bridge between technology and the marketplace, limited scholarly attention has been paid to the content analysis of BM patents. This study aims to contextualize converging BM patents by employing topic modeling technique and clustering highly marketable topics, which are expressed through a topic-market impact matrix. We relied on BM patent data filed between 2010 and 2022 to derive empirical insights into the commercial potential of emerging business models. Subsequently, nine topics were identified, including but not limited to "Data Analytics and Predictive Modeling" and "Mobile-Based Digital Services and Advertising." The 2x2 matrix allows to position topics based on the variables of topic growth rate and market impact, which is useful for prioritizing areas that require attention or are promising. This study differentiates itself by going beyond simple topic classification based on topic modeling, reorganizing the findings into a matrix format. T he results of this study are expected to serve as a valuable reference for companies seeking to innovate their business models and enhance their competitive positioning.

  • This paper investigates the relationships between exports, firm size, and firm dynamics. It is based on a longitudinal data covering listed firms in the Korean manufacturing industry. We found the stylized fact that the probability that a firm is exporter increases with firm size. A regression model for the determinant of export/sales ratio including dynamic adjustment process is tested on a cross-section sample for the year 2001. Empirical findings suggest that there is a positive and inversely U-shaped relationship between firm size and export/sales ratio, just for basic material and capital good industry. Except for firm size, the hypotheses concerning human capital intensity, physical capital intensity, R&D intensity, and patent are rejected. Using Granger causality test, we found that the rate of growth of total sales influences the change of the export/sales ratio with time lag for medium-sized firms. Finally, some policy implications are presented.

  • Employing firm-level data during the period of 1980-2006, this paper analyzes the R&D efficiency of IT SMEs. We focus on comparing the R&D efficiency of IT SMEs with that of large-sized IT firms and non-IT SMEs. The results are summarized as follows. First, the R&D investment of IT SMEs has not been increased since 2000. In IT manufacturing industry, the portion of the R&D investment of IT SMEs is no more than 10.6% in 2005. Second, we analyze the innovation capacity of SMEs with the number of the patent application. The result is similar with the trend of R&D investment. The portion of the patent application of SMEs has not been increased since 2000. Third, the R&D efficiency of non-IT firms is higher than that of IT SMEs regardless of the firm size. The R&D efficiency of non-IT SMEs is over three times as large as that of IT SMEs. Meanwhile, The R&D efficiency of the large-sized non IT firms is 1.86 times as large as that of IT large-sized firms. Finally, we estimate the R&D elasticity and compare between IT manufacturing and service industry. The result shows that the R&D elasticity of IT service industry is higher than that of IT manufacturing industry, regardless of firm size.

  • Drawing on the organizational learning theory, we argue that international patenting allows firms to assess the potential value of their innovation in host countries and find out latent local competitors. The information obtained from international patenting enables firms to make refined innovations that facilitate export performance. However, structural inertia and old knowledge can impede learning from international patenting. Thus, we expect larger firms and older firms to display greater reluctance to use the knowledge obtained from international patenting. Our empirical analysis of Korean pharmaceutical companies from 1998 to 2010 shows that international patent application increases export intensity but firm size and age weaken the positive effect of international patenting on export performance.
