  • Several alternatives for increasing the fluoride concentration in the mouth, such as water fluoridation, ingestion of fluoride supplements, fluoride paste, fluoride mouthrinse, application of fluoride gel are available. There is an impressive body of evidence that the topically deliverd fluorides are clinically effective in inhibiting the progression of dental caries. Recent studies on the cariostatic action of fluoride have indicated the importance of fluoride in the fluid environment of the teeth. The fluoride levels in unstimulated whole saliva can be considered indicative of F in the aqueous phase available for interaction with the tooth surface at a given time. The retention of F in the mouth after topical fluoride treatment is considered to be an important factor in the clinical efficacy of F. The aim of this study was to determine the elevation and clearance of fluoride in whole saliv after the following topical flouride treatments using HMDS-diffusion technique and fluoride ion electrode. The obtained results were as follow: 1. Average salivary fluoride concentration in the unstimulated whole saliva was $0.0152ppm{\pm}0.0091ppm$. Unstimulated salivary flow rate was between 0.34-0.36ml/min and there was no statistically significant difference among the groups(p>0.05). 2. Except for the immediate time after treatment, fluoride levels followed as APF gel>neutral gel>F-rinse>F-paste. There was no statistical difference between the salivary F concentration of F-paste group and that of control group after 2 hours. In case of F-rinse group, after 3 hours the concentration had dropped to baseline value. But there was statistically significant difference among the F concentraion of F gel groups and that of control group(p<0.05). 3. The mean $AUC_{0-120min}$ values were followed as neutral gel>APF gel>F-rinse>F-paste, and the values of the two former groups were significantly higher than those of the two latter groups(p<0.05).

  • In principle, the blood galactose level may be determined conveniently with a strip-type biosensor similar to that for glucose. In this study, we describe the development of a disposable galactose biosensor strip for point-of-care testing. The sensor strip is constructed with screen-printed carbon paste electrode (SPCE) and sample amount (< $100{\mu}L$). The developed strip the galactose level in less than 90 s using bienzymatic system of galactose oxidase (GAO) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The effects of pH, mediator (1,1-ferrocenedimethanol) concentration, ratio of enzymes, and applied potential were determined preliminarily with glassy carbon electrodes, and optimized further with the strip-type electrodes. The sensor exhibits linear response in the range of $0{\sim}400{\mu}M$ ($r^2$ = 0.997, S/N = 3). Since a low working potential, in principle, the fabricated disposable galactose biosensor has -100 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl), it is applied for the detection of galactose, interfering responses from common interferents such as ascorbic acid, uric acid and acetaminophen could be minimized. The sensor has been used to determine the total galactose level in standard samples with satisfactory reproducibility (CV = 5 %).

  • Parallel-plate-type scanning sensors have been commercially used for X-ray imaging sensors. In this study, we manufactured the scan typed 1D X-ray image sensor that can be used to obtain scanning images, by using the plasma display panel (PDP) fabrication process. We fabricated drift and pixel electrodes in the glass chamber and injected Xe gas at atmospheric pressure. We evaluated the intensity of a pixel signal depending on the bias voltage on the drift electrode and investigated the characteristics of shielding effect on the single pixel using lead (Pb). The adsorption rate of X-ray photon is low (4%) on the soda lime glass (1.1mm) and the electrical signal detected on the X-ray sensor was increased in the high bias voltage. We acquired digital X-ray scanning image with our DAS (data acquisition system) and sensor scanning system.

  • Titanium nanotubes (TNT) of various lengths ranging from $0.34^{\circ}C$ to a maximum of $8.9^{\circ}C$ were prepared by anodizing a titanium metal sheet in an electrolyte containing fluorine ion ($F^-$) of HF, NaF and $NH_4F$. When TNT prepared by anodizing was calcined at $450^{\circ}C$, anatase crystals with photo activity were formed. The TNT-based dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) showed a maximum conversion efficiency of 4.71% when the TNT length was $2.5{\mu}m$. This value was about 18% higher than photo conversion efficiency of the FTO-based DSSC coated with titania paste. And the short circuit current density ($J_{sc}$) of the TNT-DSSC was $9.74mA/cm^2$, which was about 35% higher than the $7.19mA/cm^2$ of FTO-DSSC. The reason for the higher conversion efficiency of TNT-DSSC solar cells is that photoelectrons generated from dyes are rapidly transferred to the electrode surface through TNT, and the recombination of photoelectrons and dyes is suppressed.

  • The development of an enzymatic biosensor for dopamine determination based on multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and peroxidase obtained from the crude extract of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) was proposed. Peroxidase catalyzes the oxidation of dopamine to dopamine quinone. The influence on the response of analytical parameters of biosensors such as enzyme concentration, dopamine concentration, pH, and phosphate buffer solution concentration were investigated. The analytical parameters obtained, including sensitivity, linearity, and stability, were investigated. The proposed method for dopamine determination presented good selectivity even in the presence of uric acid and ascorbic acid. The sensor presented a higher response for dopamine in 0.010 M phosphate buffer at pH 6.50, with an applied potential of -0.15 V. The detection limit of the electrode was 2.7×10−6 M (S/N = 3) and the relative standard deviation of the measurements, which were repeated 10 times using 5.0×10−2 M dopamine, was 1.3%.

  • Piezoelectric powder with the composition of PbTiO$_3$-PbZrO$_3$-Pb(Mn$\_$1/3/Nb$\_$2/3/)O$_3$ and small particle size of 0.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was investigated for low-temperature firing of PZT thick films. PbTiO$_3$-PbZrO$_3$-Pb(Mn$\_$1/3/Nb$\_$2/3)O$_3$ ceramics showed dense microstructure and superior piezoelectric properties, electromechanical coupling factor (k$\_$p/) of 0.501 and piezoelectric constant (d$\_$33/) of 224. The PZT paste was made of the powder and organic vehicles, and screen-printed on Pt(450nm)/YSZ(110nm)/SiO$_2$(300nm)/Si substrates and fired at 800∼900$^{\circ}C$. Any interface reaction between the PZT thick film and the bottom electrode was not observed in the PZT thick films. The PZT thick film fired at 800$^{\circ}C$ showed moderate electrical properties, the remanent polarization(p$\_$r/) of 16.0 ${\mu}$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the coercive field(E$\_$c/) of 36.7 ㎸/cm, and dielectric constant ($\varepsilon$$\_$r/) of 531. Low-temperature sinterable piezoelectric composition and high activity of fine particles reduced the sintering temperature of the thick film. This PZT thick film could be utilized for piezoelectric microactuators or microsensors that require Si micromachining technology.

  • The response characteristics of the bioelectrode developed by the co-immobilization of black goat liver tissue and ferrocene in a carbon paste matrix for the amperometric determination of hydrogen peroxide were evaluated. In the range of electrode potential examined ($-0.3{\sim}+0.0\;V$ vs. Ag/AgCl), the response time was relatively short (t95%=12 s) and it responded in the wide range of pH. The detection limit was 2.25${\times)10^{-6}M$ and a relative standard deviation of the measurements which were repeated 15 times using 1.0${\times}10^{-2 }$M hydrogen peroxide was 1.87%. The bioelectrode sensitivity decreased to 50% of the original value in 19 days of continuous use.

  • Electric double layer capacitors(EDLCS) based on the charge stored at the interface between a hi팀 surface area carbon electrode and an organic electrolyte solution are widely used as a maintenance-free power source for IC memories and microcomputers. The achievement of the excellent performance of the capacitor requires an electrolyte solution which provides high conductivities over a wide temperature range and good electrochemical stabilities to allow the capacitor to be operated at high voltage. The electrochemical capacitor using a carbon material as electrodes and using an organic electrolyte with $1M-LiPF_6$ in PC-GBL-DEC(volume ratio 1:1:2) has specific capacitance of 64F/g.

  • [ $(Ba_{0.9-x}Sr_xCa_{0.10})TiO_3$ ] (x=0.33, 0.36) powders were prepared by sol-gel method. $(Ba,Sr,Ca)TiO_3$(BSCT) thick films, undoped and doped with $MnCO_3$ and $Yb_2O_3(0.1{\sim}0.7mol%)$, were fabricated by the screen printing method on the alumina substrate. The coating and drying procedure was repeated 6-times. The Pt bottom electrode was screen printing method on the alumina substrate. These BSCT thick films were annealed at $1420^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in atmosphere. The upper electrodes were fabricated by screen printing the Ag paste and then firing at $590^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. And then the structured and dielectric properties as a function of the doping amount of $Yb_2O_3$ were studied. As a result of the TG-DTA, exothermic peak was observed at around $670^{\circ}C$ due to the formation of the polycrystalline perovskite phase. All BSCT thick films showed XRD patterns of typical cubic peroveskite structure. The average thickness of BSCT thick films was about $70^{\mu}m$. The curie temperature and the dielectric constant decreased with increasing $Yb_2O_3$ doped content and the relative dielectric constant of the specimen, doped with 0.5 mol% $Yb_2O_3$ at BSCT(54/36/10), showed a best value of 5018 at curie temperature.

  • We have fabricated $WO_3$ thick film gas sensor under various firing conditions in order to study gas sensing properties in terms of the variation of microstructure and non-stoichiometric structure of gas sensing layer. $WO_3$ paste mixed homogeneously with organic vehicle was coated by screen printing method on alumina substrate composed of Au electrode and $RuO_2$heater on each side. To change filing condition, sensing materials were fared at 600-$800^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and refired at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in the mixtures of $_Ar/O2$gas. In the result of heat-treatment, $WO_3$ gas sensor fared at $700^{\circ}C$ showed best gas sensing properties of 210 gas sensitivity and 2 second response time and the best firing environment was 40-50% of $Ar/O_2$gas.
