  • Recently, the rapid development of network technology has enabled people to use various services on the internet. However, the existing password-based user authentication system used in the internet environment requires a password table, which is a potential security threat as it could be leaked by an insider. To solve this issue, remote user authentication methods that do not require a user password table have been proposed. Regarding remote user authentication using a smart card in particular, various methods have been suggested to reduce expenses and to improve stability and efficiency, but the possibility of impersonation attacks and password-guessing attacks using information saved in a user's smart card still exist. Therefore, this study proposes a remote user authentication method that can safeguard against impersonation attacks and password guessing attacks, by analyzing weak points of conventional methods and creating a smart card's ID and password that are based on the user's ID and password.

  • Recently, Ku and Chen(Ku-Chen) showed some problems in the password based remote user authentication scheme using smartcards proposed by Chien et al. and proposed an improvement from it. This paper shows some weaknesses in the Ku-Chen's scheme, especially the replay attacks, and proposes two authentication protocols to solve the problems in it. First of all, an authentication protocol using synchronized timestamps is proposed to solve the problem in the Ku-Chen's protocol. Then, a nonce-based authentication protocol is proposed to solve the inherent problems in the synchronized timestamp-based authentication protocols. The proposed authentication protocols support the advantages in the previous password-based authentication protocols and solve the problems in them effectively.

  • In this paper, the strengths and weaknesses of each type of personal authentication system are examined and the development direction of the personal authentication system is presented. Currently, the personal authentication system commonly used is a text-based password system. However, most of the current text-based password systems are weak in usability and security. In order to solve this problems a personal authentication system that can replace the text-based password system is required. In this paper, we take the recently developed graphical password system as an example to find the conditions and possibilities to replace the text-based password system, and present the development direction of the personal authentication system.

  • The password rules to be applied for the user account creation are often different by websites. Thus we often forget the password to sign in website and it creates waste of time for frequent password reset. In order to solve this problem we propose a new authentication method in this paper. When user forget the password to sign in, the existing methods require a password reset step but our proposed method provides new sign in scheme through the additional authentication step with base password and personal information registered at the member sign up stage. From the result of performance comparison the proposed method is considered to be more efficient than others because it provides not only an equivalent level of security with others but also requires only a half of the number of transactions and the time required for password reset step.

  • Since the facilities for the remote users tend to be deployed in distributed manner, authentication schemes for multi-server communication settings, which provide various web services, are required for real-world applications. A typical way to authenticate a remote user relies on password authentication mostly. However, this method is vulnerable to attacks and inconvenient as the system requires users to maintain different identities and corresponding passwords. On the other hand, the user can make use of a single password for all servers, but she may be exposed to variants of malicious attacks. In this paper, we propose an efficient and secure authentication scheme based on a brokered authentication along with smart-cards in multi-server environment. Further we show that our scheme is secure against possible attacks and analyze its performance with respect to communication and computational cost.

  • A number of three party key exchange protocols using smart card in effort to reduce server side workload and two party password based key exchange authentication protocols has been proposed. In this paper, we introduce the survey and analysis on security vulnerability of smart card based three party authenticated key exchange protocols. Furthermore, we analyze Kwak et al's password based key exchange and authentication protocols which have shown security weakness such as Shim et al's off-line password guessing attack and propose the countermeasure to deter such attack.

  • Until now, various studies on anti-phishing have been conducted. The most typical anti-phishing method is a method of collecting URL information of a phishing site in advance and then detecting phishing by comparing the URL of the visited site with the previously stored information. However, this blacklist-based anti-phishing method can not detect new phishing sites. For this reason, various anti-phishing authentication protocols have been proposed. but these protocols require a public key and a private key. In this paper, we propose a password-based mutual authentication protocol that is safe for phishing attacks. In the proposed protocol, the mutual authentication between the client and the server is performed through the authentication message including the password information. The proposed protocol is safe to eavesdropping attack because the authentication message uses the hash value of the password, not the original password, And it is safe to replay attack because different messages are used every time of authentication. In addition, since mutual authentication is performed, it is safe for man-in-the-middle attack. Finally, the proposed protocol does not require a key issuance process for authentication.

  • In this paper we propose a one-time password mechanism that solves the problems of the S/KEY: the limitation of a usage and the need of storage for keys. because of using a cryptographic algorithm the proposed mechanism has no the limitation of a usage. Also because of producing the key for an authentication from a user's password it is easy to manage the authentication key and is possible to share the session key between a client and a server after the authentication process. In addition the proposed mechanism is easy to protect and manage the authentication information because of using a smart card and is adopted by the system that needs a noe-way authentication from a client to a server without the challenge of a server.

  • As evidenced through rapidly growing digital devices and information, digital authentication is becoming ever more critical, especially considering the complex and prevalent digital accounts we are using every day. Also, digital authentication is apt to consistent digital security application. In this sense, digital security quality and usability can be enhanced by developing a mechanism for efficient digital authentication. In this paper, a mechanism of efficient digital authentication called T-TIME is introduced in order to alleviate issues dealing with secure and user friendly authentication across ever- growing digital devices and information. Touch Signal generation time difference is utilized for T-TIME as a mediation mechanism that enhances the security quality by confusing others unlike other graphical password mechanisms which are using spatial information. Hence, digital authentication by using T-TIME can be a good way of enhancing security quality and usability.

  • A new optical one-time password (OTP) authentication method using digital holography is proposed, which enhances security strength in the authentication system. A challenge-response optical OTP algorithm based on two-factor authentication is presented using two-step phase-shifting digital holography, and two-way authentication is also performed using challenge-response handshake in both directions. Identification (ID), password (PW), and OTP are encrypted with a shared key by applying phase-shifting digital holography, and these encrypted pieces of information are verified by each party by means of the shared key. The encrypted digital holograms are obtained by Fourier-transform holography and are recorded on a CCD with 256 quantized gray-level intensities. Because the intensity pattern of such an encrypted digital hologram is distributed randomly, it guards against a replay attack and results in higher security level. The proposed method has advantages, in that it does not require a time-synchronized OTP, and can be applied to various authentication applications. Computer experiments show that the proposed method is feasible for high-security OTP authentication.
