My aim in this paper is to provide a clear view of Victorian gender ideology and highlight the role played by Browning's dramatic monologues in the challenge against the strict patriarchal codes of the era. Laura Mulvey's Male Gaze theory in cinema is especially useful for understanding Browning's most well-known dramatic monologues, "Porphyria's Lover," and "My Last Duchess," because these poems are structured by polarities of looking and being looked at, the active and the passive. In her 1975 essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema", Mulvey introduced the second-wave feminist concept of "male gaze" as a feature of gender power asymmetry in film. To gaze implies more than to look at – it signifies a psychological relationship of power, in which the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze. She declares that in patriarchal society pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. Browning's women are subject to the male gaze, but they refuse to become the objects of a scopophilic pleasure-in-looking. Porphyria and the Duchess don't exist in order to satisfy the desires and pleasures of men. They reveal themselves as an autonomous being - reserved in Victorian gender dynamics for men. Mulvey advocates 'an alternative cinema' which can challenges the male-dominated Hollywood ideology. It is possible to say that Browning's dramatic monologues correspond to Mulvey's 'alternative cinema' because they show a counterview in terms of the representation of woman against the Victorian patriarchal ideology.
This study aimed to address the limitations of traditional plasma nitriding methods by implementing a short-term plasma oxy-nitriding treatment on the surface of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel. This treatment involved the sequential formation of nitride and oxide layers, to enhance surface hardness and corrosion resistance, respectively. The process resulted in the formation of a 20 ㎛-thick nitride layer and a 3 ㎛-thick oxide layer on the steel surface. Initially, the hardness increased by 2.2 times after nitriding, followed by a subsequent decrease of approximately 31 % after oxidation. While the nitriding process reduced corrosion resistance, the subsequent oxidation process led to the formation of a passive oxide film, effectively resolving this issue. The pitting corrosion of the oxide passive film started at 82.6 mVssc, providing better corrosion resistance characteristics than the nitride layer. Consequently, the trade-off between surface hardness and corrosion resistance in plasma oxy-nitrided AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel is anticipated to be recognized as an innovative and comprehensive surface treatment process for biomedical components.
The corrosion of the flexible tube in the automobile exhaust system is caused by the ambient water and chloride ions. Since welding is one of the key processes for the flexible tube manufacturing, it is required to select a proper welding method to prevent the flexible tube corrosion and to increase its lifetime. There are many studies about the efficiency of the welding method, but no systematic study is performed for the effect of welding method on the corrosion property of the austenitic stainless weldment. The aim of the present study is to provide information on the effect of two different welding methods of TIGW (tungsten inert gas welding) and PAW (plasma arc welding) on the corrosion property of austenitic stainless steel weldment. Materials used in this study were two types of the commercial austenitic stainless steel, STS321 and XM15J1, which were used for flexible tube material for the automotive exhaust system. Microstructure was observed by using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To evaluate the corrosion behavior, potentiodynamic and potentiostatic tests were performed. The chemical state of the passive film was analyzed in terms of XPS depth profile. Metallurgical analysis show that the ferrite content in fusion zone of both STS321 and XM15J1 is higher when welded by PAW than by TIGW. The potentiodynamic and potentiostatic test results show that both STS321 and XM15J1 have higher transpassive potential and lower passive current density when welded by PAW than by TIGW. XPS analysis indicates that the stable $Cr_2O_3$ layer at the outermost layer of the passive film is formed when welded by PAW. The result recommends that PAW is more desirable than TIGW to secure corrosion resistance of the flex tube which is usually made of austenitic stainless steel.
Jet impinging device is designed for decay heat removal on horizontal fuel rods in a low temperature heating reactor. An experimental system with a fuel rod simulator is established and experiments are performed to evaluate water film covering capacity, within 0.0287-0.0444 kg/ms mass flow rate, 0-164.1 kW/m2 heating flux and 13.8-91.4℃ feeding water temperature. An effective method to obtain the film coverage rate by infrared equipment is proposed. Water film flowing patterns are recoded and the film coverage rates at different circumference angles are measured. It is found the film coverage rate decreases with heating flux during single-phase convection, while increases after onset of nucleate boiling. Besides, film coverage rate is found affected by Marangoni effect and film accelerating effect, and surface wetting is significantly facilitated by bubble behavior. Based on the observed phenomenon and physical mechanism, dry-out depth and initial dry-out rate are proposed to evaluate film covering potential on a heating surface. A model to predict film coverage rate is proposed based on the data. The findings would have reliable guide and important implications for further evaluation and design of decay heat removal system of new reactors, and could be helpful for passive containment cooling research.
The carboxylates as a corrosion inhibitor has been studied by many researchers because of its environmental safety and low depletion rate. However, conventional test methods of inhibitor such as weight loss measurements, linear polarization resistance and corrosion potential monitoring etc., evaluate uniform corrosion of metals. These methods are unable to evaluate crevice-related corrosions, which are encountered in most of heat exchanging facilities. In order to choose the optimum corrosion inhibitor, the appropriate test methods are required to evaluate their performances in service environment. From this point of view, polarization technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of sodium heptanoate on corrosion behavior for carbon steel. Especially a thin film crevice sensor technique were applied to simulate the crevice corrosion in this study. From these experiments, we found that oxygen as an oxidizing agent was required to obtain stable passive film on the metal. Presence of oxygen, however, accelerated crevice corrosion. Potential shift by oxygen depletion and weakened inhibitive film inside the crevice were responsible for such accelerated feature. It is shown that film for corrosion inhibition is a mixture of sodium heptanoate and iron (II) heptanoate as reaction product of iron surface and sodium heptanoate. The iron (II) heptanoate which has been synthesized by reaction of heptanoic acid and ferrous chloride in methanol solution forms bidentate complex.
Effects of magnesium and pH on corrosion of aluminum galvanically coupled to iron have studied by using potentio- dynamic and static tests for polarization curves, Mott-Schottky test for analysis of semiconductor property, and GD-AES and XPS for film analysis. Pitting potential was sensitive to magnesium as an alloying element but not to pH, while passive current was sensitive to pH but not to magnesium. It was explained with, instead of point defect model (PDM), surface charge model describing that the ingression of chloride depends on the state of surface charge and passive film at film/solution interface is affected by pH. In addition, galvanic current of aluminum electrically coupled to iron was not affected by magnesium in pH 8.4, 0.2M citrate solution but was increased by magnesium at the solution of pH 9.1. The galvanic current at pH 9.1 increased with time at the initial stage and after the exposure of about 200 minute, decreased and stabilized. The behavior of the galvanic current was related with the concentration of magnesium at the surface. It agreed with the depletion of magnesium at the oxide surface by using glow discharge atomic emission spectroscopy (GD-AES). In addition, pitting potential of pure aluminum was reduced in neutral pH solution where chloride ion maybe are competitively adsorbed on pure aluminum. It was confirmed by the exponential decrease of pitting potential with log of [$Cl^-$] around 0.025 M of [$Cl^-$] and linear decrease of the pitting potential. From the above results, unlike magnesium, alloying elements with higher electron negativity, lowering isoelectric point (ISE), are recommended to be added to improve pitting corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys in neutral solutions as well as their galvanic corrosion resistance in weakly basic solutions.
In this paper, two reconstructed point cloud sets with the information of 3D features are analyzed. For a certain 3D reconstruction of the interior of a building, the first image set is taken from the sequential passive camera movement along the regular grid path and the second set is from the application of the laser scanning process. Matched key points over all images are obtained by the SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transformation) algorithm and are used for the registration of the point cloud data. The obtained results are point cloud number, average density of point cloud and the generating time for point cloud. Experimental results show the necessity of images from the additional sensors as well as the images from the camera for the more accurate 3D reconstruction of the interior of a building.
A new Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy has designed and examined some possibility of forming more passive oxide film by oxidation treatment which is closely related to corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloys were prepared by consumable vacuum arc melting and homogenized at 1050$^{\circ}C$ for 24hours. Alloy specimens were oxidized at the temperature range of 400 to 750$^{\circ}C$ for 30minutes, and the oxide films on Ti alloys were analysed by optical microscope, SEM, XPS and TGA. Cytotoxicity test was performed in MTT assay treated L929 fibroblast cell culture by indirect method. It is found out that the oxide film on Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy is denser and thinner compared to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The weight gain during the oxidation was increased rapidly at the temperature above 650$^{\circ}C$ for Ti-6Al-4V alloy and above 700$^{\circ}C$ for Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy respectively. It was analysed that the passive film of the Ti alloys consisted of TiO2 through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. It is found out by cytotoxicity test that moderate oxidation treatment lowers cell toxicity, and Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy showed better result compared to Ti-6Al-4V alloy.
Recently, It has been reported that the spin sprayed ferite film shows better magnetic properties at high frequeny that the ferrite by co-firing over $800^{\circ}C$ . Besides, there is no limitation to select the substrate materials because it can be processed with relatively low temperature below $100^{\circ}C$. Therefore, we fabricated film inductor as a passive device for DC-DC converter by a use of spin sprayed embedded form was completed by via hole process of pad opening. Saturation magnetization of 0.61 T and real part of permeability of 110 were obtained in Ni-Zn ferrite. In addition, inductance of 1.52 ${\mu}H$, quality factor of 24.3 at 5 MHz were measured with spiral 16 turn inductor. The rated current of inductor was 863 mA.
Thin silicon ribbon was used for fabricating flexible silicon p-i-n junction devices, consisting of 100${\times}$100 arrays of pixels in 1 inch on the diagonal. Those passive matrix devices exhibited the rectification ratio $>10^{4}$ owing to smaller cross-talking current than that of p-n junction devices. P-i-n devices fabricated on silica/silicon substrates are easily detached by treatment with hydrofluoric acid and are subsequently transferred onto both PDMS and flexible PET film.
