  • Zinc coating on carbon steels give the higher corrosion resistance in chloride containing environments and in carbonated concrete. However, hydrogen evolution accompanies the corrosion of zinc in the initial activity in fresh concrete, which can lead to the formation of a porous structure at the reinforcement -concrete interface, which can potentially reduce the bond-strength of the reinforcement with concrete. The present study examines the mechanism of the corrosion of hot-dip galvanized steel in detail, as in the model pore solutions and real concrete. Calcium ion plays an important role in the corrosion mechanism, as it prevents the formation of passive layers on zinc at an elevated alkalinity. The corrosion rate of galvanized steel decreases in accordance with the exposure time; however, the reason for this is not the zinc transition into passivity, but the consumption of the less corrosion-resistant phases of hot-dip galvanizing in the concrete environment. The results on the electrochemical tests have been confirmed by the bond-strength test for the reinforcement of concrete and by evaluating the porosity of the cement adjacent to the reinforcement.

  • It has been investigated corrosion resistance and crystal structure of Zn-Cr coatings fabricated by electroplating method and electron-beam physical vapor deposition method(EB-P VD). The electroplated Zn-Cr alloy consists mainly of η'-Zn phase for the lower Cr content than 7.9 wt% Cr and ${\gamma}$'-ZnCr phase for the higher Cr content. In the Zn-Cr alloy fabricated by EB-PVD the ${\gamma}$'-ZnCr phase appeared clearly at 3 wt% Cr and it became the sole phase at 50 wt%Cr. The amount of η'-Zn phase decreased obviously with increasing Cr content when it exceeded 15 wt% Cr. The electrochemical measurement of the electroplated Zn-Cr film has shown corrosion potential of about -1000 mV. The current density of active region and the amount of dissolved Zn and Cr decreased significantly with increasing Cr content. The electrochemical characteristics of Zn-Cr alloy fabricated by EB-PVD have shown that the alloy of 50 wt% Cr had the highest corrosion potential(-500 mV) and the lowest critical passive current density than that of the electroplated.

  • Stainless steel was applied as bipolar plate (BP) of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) due to high mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and good machinability. However, stainless steel was corroded and increased contact resistance resulting PEMFC performance decrease. Although the corrosion resistance could be improved by surface treatment such as noble metal coating, there is a disadvantage of cost increase. The stainless steel corrosion behavior and passive layer influence on PEMFC performance should be studied to improve durability and economics of metal bipolar plate. In this study, SUS316L bipolar plate of 25 cm2 active area was manufactured, and experiments were conducted for corrosion behavior at an anode and cathode. The influence of SUS316L BP corrosion on fuel cell performance was measured using the polarization curve, impedance, and contact resistance. The metal ion concentration in drained water was analyzed during fuel cell operation with SUS316L BP. It was confirmed that the corrosion occurs more severely at the anode than at the cathode for SUS316L BP. The contact resistance was increased due to the passivation of SUS316L during fuel cell operation, and metal ions continuously dissolved even after the passive layer formation.

  • In this paper, a novel laser-based non-contact and non-destructive stress measurement technique is newly proposed for measuring stress in steel structural members. As the demand of stress monitoring in structural members is increased, various non-destructive techniques are being applied to the field of structural health monitoring. Spectroscopic techniques are non-contact technique and widely used for chemical identification of target materials. Especially, piezospectroscopic technique is a residual stress measurement technique in thermal barrier coatings. Although the piezospectroscopic technique has high possibility of measuring structural stress in steel members, the technique has been rarely applied to this field. In this paper, piezospectroscopy-based stress measurement technique is, therefore, proposed for measuring stress in steel structural member. To do that, alumina particles have been coated onto a specimen of a structural steel rod using a thermal spray coating technique. And then, an uniaxial compression test has been conducted to the specimen to collect each fluorescence spectrum under different loading conditions. Finally, the linear relation of spectral shift and applied compressive stress of the specimen has been experimentally established.

  • PEMS (printed electro-mechanical system) is fabricated by means of various printing technologies. Passive and active compo-nents in 2D or 3D such as conducting lines, resistors, capacitors, inductors and TFT(Thin Film Transistor), which are printed withfunctional materials, can be classified in this category. And the issue of PEMS is applied to a R2R process in the manu-facturing process. In many electro-devices, the vacuum process is used as the manufacturing process. However, the vacuum process has a problem, it is difficult to apply to a continuous process such as a R2R(roll to roll) printing process. In this paper, we propose an ESD (electro static deposition) printing process has been used to apply an organic solar cell of thin film forming. ESD is a method of liquid atomization by electrical forces, an electrostatic atomizer sprays micro-drops from the solution injected into the capillary with electrostatic force generated by electric potential of about several tens kV. ESD method is usable in the thin film coating process of organic materials and continuous process as a R2R manufacturing process. Therefore, we experiment the thin films forming of PEDOT:PSS layer and active layer which consist of the P3HT:PCBM. The organic solar cell based on a P3HT/PCBM active layer and a PEDOT:PSS electron blocking layer prepared from ESD method shows solar-to-electrical conversion efficiency of 1.42% at AM 1.5G 1sun light illumination, while 1.86% efficiency is observed when the ESD deposition of P3HT/PCBM is performed on a spin-coated PEDOT:PSS layer.

  • Indium tin oxide(ITO) films coated on the window glass selectively transmit the solar energy and infrared. We call this system passive solar collectors. Selectively absorbing properties of sol gel dip coated ITO films were characterized by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. The effects of heat treating temperature, time, atmosphere, substrate and barrier layers are concerned. Indium tin oxide films heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ in a reducing atmosphere show intrinsic properties. Efficiency of solar energy transmittance was enhanced by coating of $SiO_2-ZrO_2$ as an alkali ion barrier layer. Energy was saved by the double layers of $SiO_2-ZrO_2$ and ITO since solar energy is transmitted and heat generated inside(${\lambda}$ > 2700nm) is reflected.

  • In the present study, the flat plate model test method is developed to evaluate the skin friction of the marine coating in the cavitation tunnel. Six-component force balance is used to measure the profile drag of the flat plate and strut. LDV(laser Doppler velocimetry) technique is also employed to evaluate the drag and to figure out the reason of the drag reduction. The flow velocities above the surface can be used to assess the skin friction, combined with direct force measurement. Since the vortical structure in the coherent turbulence structure influences on the skin friction in the high Reynolds number regime, the interaction between the turbulence structure and the surface wall is paying more attention. This sort of thing is important in the passive control of the turbulent boundary layer because the skin friction can't be determined only by wall condition. As complicated flow phenomena exist around a paint film, systematic measurement and analysis are necessary to evaluate the skin friction appropriately.

  • In the perspective of saving energy in buildings, the high performance of insulation and air tightness for improving the heating and the cooling efficiency, has brought economically positive effects. However, these building energy saving technologies cause the lack of ventilation, which is the direct cause of increasing the indoor contaminants, and is also very harmful to the residents, because they spend over 90% of their time indoors. Therefore, the ventilation is important to keep the indoor environment clean and it can also save the energy consumption. In this study, a HEPA type nano ceramic filter is designed as a passive ventilation system to collect airborne particles and to supply fresh outdoor air. The double layer filter, which has $30{\mu}m$ in diameter at the conditions of 10wt% of concentration and 3kV/cm of the electric intensity, is produced by electrospinning. The filtration coating technology is confirmed in the solution with $SiO_2$ nano particles using polymer nano fibers. Also double layer filters are coated with $SiO_2$ nano particles and finally the porous construction materials are made by sintering in the electric furnace at $200{\sim}1400^{\circ}C$. The efficiency is measured 96.67% at the particle size of $0.31{\mu}m$, which is slightly lower than HEPA filter. However the efficiency is turned out to be sufficient.

  • Chemical modification of titanium/titanium oxide (Ti/$TiO_2$) substrates has recently gained a great deal of attention because of the applications of Ti/$TiO_2$-based materials to biomedical areas. The reported modification methods generally involve passive coating of Ti/$TiO_2$ substrates with protein-resistant materials, and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has proven advantageous for bestowing a nonbiofouling property on the surface of Ti/$TiO_2$. However, the wider applications of Ti/$TiO_2$ based materials to biomedical areas will require the introduction of biologically active moieties onto Ti/$TiO_2$, in addition to nonbiofouling property. In this work, we therefore utilized surface-initiated polymerization to coat the Ti/$TiO_2$ substrates with polymers presenting the nonbiofouling PEG moiety and subsequently conjugated biologically active compounds to the PEG-presenting, polymeric films. Specifically, a Ti/$TiO_2$ surface was chemically modified to present an initiator for atom transfer radical polymerization, and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (pEGMA) was polymerized from the surface. After activation of hydroxyl groups of poly(pEGMA) (pPEGMA) with N,N'-disuccinimidyl carbonate, biotin, a model compound, was conjugated to the pPEGMA films. The reactions were confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle goniometry, and ellipsometry. The biospecific binding of target proteins was also utilized to generate micropatterns of proteins on the Ti/$TiO_2$ surface.

  • A straightforward, yet effective surface modification method of stainless steel mesh and its interesting anti-wetting characteristics are reported in this study. The stainless steel mesh is electrochemically etched, and the specimen has both micro and nano-scale structures on its surface. This process transforms the two types of mesh specimens known as the regular and dense specimens into hydrophobic specimens without applying any hydrophobic chemical coating process. The fundamental wettability of the modified mesh is analyzed through a dedicatedly designed experiment to investigate the waterproof characteristics, for instance, the penetration threshold. The waterproof characteristics are evaluated in a manner that the modified mesh resists as high as approximately 2.7 times the pressure compared with the bare mesh, i.e., the non-modified mesh. The results show that the penetration threshold depends primarily on the advancing contact angles, and the penetration stop behaviors are affected by the contact angle hysteresis on the surfaces. The findings further confirm that the inexpensive waterproof meshes created using the proposed straightforward electrochemical etching process are effective and can be adapted along with appropriate designs for various practical applications, such as underwater devices, passive valves, and transducers. In general, , additional chemical coatings are applied using hydrophobic materials on the surfaces for the applications that require water-repelling capabilities. Although these chemical coatings can often cause aging, the process proposed in this study is not only cost-effective, but also durable implying that it does not lose its waterproof properties over time.
