  • In this paper, the problem of voltage unbalancing in series-connected multiple electric double-layer capacitors(EDLCs) is studied. Good understanding of this problem is required in order to increase reliability and stability of an energy storage system comprising EDLCs. Existing methods to settle voltage unbalancing cannot mitigate the problem enough for each cell, since most method have been applied to each module. For equalizing between cells, Zener diode which is one of passive method have been well examined in literature. However, Zener have well not used in balancing due to heating problem. In addition, It is difficult to choose Zener diode fitted rating voltage of EDLC, because of its internal resistance. Thus, we proposed passive balancing using Zener diode by analyzing parasitic element of Zener and EDLC. To experimentally confirm the balancing effect, we compared in two occasions which are with and without passive. As a result, proposed passive balancing circuit mitigated unbalanced voltage gap between EDLCs.

  • This paper presents the analysis, the fabrication and the test results of a micro passive gas pressure regulator to keep the outlet pressure costant even for a widely-varying inlet pressure. This device is to regulate the outlet pressure according to the applied reference pressure based on the pressure balancing mechanism of the structure including a membrane and a valve. This regulator consists of four layers; a bulk-micromachined silicon substrate, a sandblasted glass substrate, a PDMS valve seat layer and a glass valve layer. The device size is $10\times13\times1.7 mm3$. The device was fabricated by micromachining. The characteristic of the device was analyzed and tested. The characteristic of the fabricated pressure regulator is similar to that obtained from the analysis. The pressure regulator of this paper is feasible for portable systems and miniature drug delivery systems.

  • Lithium polymer batteries are used in energy storage systems (ESS), electric vehicles (EVs), etc. due to their high safety, fast charging and long lifecycle, and now they are used in agricultural drones. However, when overcharging and overdischarging, the lithium-polymer battery is destroyed in the gap structure in the lithium-ion battery and the battery life is reduced. In order to prevent overcharge and overdischarge, uneven cell voltage Cell balancing system is needed. In this paper, a fuzzy controller suitable for nonlinear systems is proposed by detecting the unbalanced cells by detecting the voltage difference between charging and discharging of each cell, and suggesting the applied cell balancing algorithm. In this paper, we have designed the cell balancing of the battery pack of agricultural drones by fuzzy control and it is designed for equal control between cells. As a final result, we checked whether cell balancing is good, and when there are two cells, Cell balancing was confirmed. We tested whether it could be used for other products. As a result, we confirmed that cell balancing is good regardless of the number of cells used.

  • In this paper, mesh network structure is applied to solve the load balancing problems in the Grid database. Data of the Grid database is replicated to several node for enhanced performance. Therefore, load balancing for user's query is selected node that evaluated workload in it. Existing researches are using passive load balancing method that selected another node after then node overflowed workload. It is inefficient to be applied to Gird database that has a number of node and user's queries almost changes dynamically. The proposed method connected each node which includes the same data through mesh network structure. When user's query occurs, it select node that has the lowest workload. The performance evaluation shows that proposed method performs better than the existing methods.

  • Recently, the demand for low-voltage, high-capacity ESS is rapidly increasing due to the revitalization of the e-mobility industry, which is mainly powered by electricity. In addition, the demand for portable power banks is rapidly increasing due to the revitalization of leisure industries such as camping and fishing. The ESS with this structure consists of a small number of series cells and many parallel cells, resulting in a system with a large rated current. Therefore, the number of power devices for cell balancing configured in series is small, but a balancing device with a large current capacity is required. Construction of a constant temperature device in such a low-voltage, high-current ESS is difficult due to economic issues. The demand for an active balancing system that can solve the passive balancing heating problem is rapidly increasing. In this paper, propose a power feedback fly-back topology that can solve the balancing heating problem. The characteristic of the proposed topology is that a series-connected voltage sharing voltage is used as the input of the flyback converter, and the converter output is connected to one transformer. In this structure, the converter output for cell voltage balancing shares magnetic flux through one high-frequency transformer, so the cell voltage connected to the converter automatically converges to the same voltage.

  • To increase the capacity of secondary cells, an appropriate serial composition of the battery modules is essential. The unbalance that may occur due to the series connection in such a serial composition is the main cause for declines in the efficiency and performance of batteries. Various studies have been conducted on the use of a passive or active topology to eliminate the unbalance from the series circuit of battery modules. Most topologies consist of a complex structure in which the Battery Management System (BMS) detects the voltage of each module and establishes the voltage balancing in the independent electrical power converters installed on each module by comparing the module voltage. This study proposes a new magnetic flux sharing type DC/DC converter topology in order to remove voltage unbalances from batteries. The proposed topology is characterized by a design in which all of the DC/DC convertor outputs connected to the modules converge into a single transformer. In this structure, by taking a form in which all of the battery balancing type converters share magnetic flux through a single harmonic wave transformer, all of the converter voltages automatically converge to the same voltage. This paper attempts to analyze the dynamic properties of the proposed circuit by using a Programmable Synthesizer Interface Module (PSIM), which is useful for power electronics analysis, while also attempting to demonstrate the validity of the proposed circuit through experimental results.

  • A single-stage current-balancing multi-channel light-emitting diode (LED) driver is proposed in this study. The conventional LED driver system consists of two cascaded power conversion stages, i.e., an isolation DC/DC converter and LED driver. LED driver is usually implemented with the same number of expensive boost converters as those of LED channels to tightly control the current through each LED channel. Therefore, its overall system size is not only bulky, but the cost is rather high. By contrast, the proposed LED driver system is composed of a single power stage with the DC/DC converter and LED driver merged. Although the current balancing circuit of the proposed LED driver requires only passive devices instead of expensive boost converters, all currents through multi-channel LEDs can be well balanced. Therefore, the proposed LED driver features a small system size, improved efficiency, and low cost. To confirm the validity of the proposed driver, its operation and performance are verified on a prototype for a 46" LED TV.

  • This study presents a new portable eight-output light emitting diode (LED) driver. The eight output-channels are divided into two equal groups, and their output powers can be controlled individually by three active switches. In addition, a simple capacitor-based passive current balancing circuit (CBC) is employed in each port to guarantee that the currents of the four LEDs are the same. When compared with the conventionally used separate two-output isolated converters, the proposed one uses one less active switch. Moreover, zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) is achieved, which improves the power efficiency of the driver. Finally, a highly compact prototype is built, which can reach an efficiency of 94.6%.
