  • In this study, in-cylinder flow of the swirl chamber type diesel engine numerically simulated by VECTIS code. The flow fields during the intake and compression process were also investigated in detail. Numerical results revealed that the generation and distortion of the swirling, tumbling vortices and those influences on turbulence kinetic energy by shape of the jet passage, angle and area. It was also found that flow characteristics were affected by inflow velocity that depends on change of the jet passage shape. Swirl ratio was increased according to decrease of jet passage area, and was affected by piston motion according to increase of jet passage angle. Tumbling vortices had the similar in various cases, but tumble ratio was increased with the inflow velocity. The generation of turbulence kinetic energy was considerably influenced by complex effects of swirling and tumbling vortices.

  • The Myodo-Strait at Yeosu Port is normally used as a major vessel passage for dangerous cargo carriers that carry regular products of dangerous goods. Currently, the Myodo-Strait allows only single passage, and the speed of passage is also limited to 8 knots. As a result, demurrage at the wharf of hazardous goods are also on the rise. It is expected that the development of a number of dangerous commodity wharf in the future will increase the volume of vessel traffic and increase the number of vessels used in the project area. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the waterway in order to secure the safety of ships using the waterway and improve the demurrage. This study proposed an improvement plan for the waterway through the analysis of the marine environment of the waterway and the process of collecting opinions from users in the sea area. and it was finally proposed to expend the width of the strait to 300m and secure a depth of 9.50m through Guidelines of Port and Harbor Design review and ship handling simulation evaluation. In addition it was evaluated that the vessel traffic congestions at peak-time in the situation of solo passage was greatly improved from 71.01% to 47.3% even when it was allowed to ship's crossing passage, as a result of vessel traffic congestions evaluation. According to the proposed improvement plan, the safety of ships' passage in the project area can be secured, and the issue of demurrage was also considered to be improved.

  • The present study proposes a new structure for a flat plate heat pipe which could embody a thin thickness, any shapes and high heat density a unit area. It is on the structure for the formation of vapor passages and the support of the case of the flat plate heat pipe. A screen mesh is used as the one. To verify the validity of the one, the flat plate heat pipe of 1.08mm thickness was made with a layer of the screen mesh with 14 and 100 mesh number respectively and tested. Here the screen mesh with 14 mesh number plays a role of the vapor passage and the support of the case and the screen mesh with 100 mesh number functions as the wick structure. T he results show that the screen mesh excellently carries out the function of the vapor passage and the support of the case.

  • During the period from Jan. to Dec. 1998 and Yellow Sand phenomena, dustfall samples were collected by simple deposit jar and petridish, and calculation of passage amounts of Yellow Sand by the utilization of environmental air monitoring 4 stations from 1995 to 1998 in Seoul. Passage amounts of Yellow Sand were estimated 3,024 ton in 1995, 367 ton in 1996, 105 ton in 1997 and 3,444 ton in 1998 respectively. The highest passage amount of Yellow Sand was marked 3,444 ton in 1998 that is related to frequence of appearance. Average deposition of dusfall was $6.570{\;}ton/\textrm{km}^2$/month during the sampling periods, while average deposition of dusfall in Yellow Sand phenomena was $53.68{\;}ton/\textrm{km}^2$/month which was 8 times higher than average deposition.

  • The shopping center in underground passage for efficient space utilization is increased in urban area. This study describes operation characteristics of HVAC systems with ventilation and individual heating and cooling unit for shopping center in underground passage. In order to compare energy saving, thermal environment and installation space, etc., an integrated simulator with heat production and distribution system was designed and constructed. Energy delivery efficiency is improved over 20%, and energy saving of the hybrid system is calculated as over 30% compared to conventional all air type in the case of heating. And also the results showed that humidity decreased about $5{\sim}6%$, also characteristics of thermal control is improved over 34%.

  • A numerical analysis on engine coolant is made by the use of FVM based general purpose 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes solver, TURB-3D. Numerical solutions are verified by comparison with the experimental data of Lotus model. The results show a good qualitative as well as quantitative comparison. Coolant flow rate control is attempted through adjusting the cross section area of passage base on the results of an original coolant passage. It is concluded from the results that the flow rate control is possible as attempted, and thus can be used in the real engine design.

  • A new surface shape of an internal cooling passage which largely reduces the pressure drop and enhances the surface heat transfer is proposed in the present study. The surface shape of the cooling passage is consisted of the concave dimple and the riblet inside the dimple which is protruded along the stream-wise direction. Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) for the fully developed turbulent flow and thermal fields in the cooling passage is conducted. The numerical simulations for five different surface shapes are conducted at the Reynolds number of 2800 based on the mean bulk velocity and channel height and Prandtl number of 0.71. The driving pressure gradient is adjusted to keep a constant mass flow rate in the x direction. The thermoaerodynamic performance for five different cases used in the present study was assessed in terms of the drag, Nusselt number, Fanning friction factor, volume and area goodness factor in the cooling passage. The value of maximum ratio of drag reduction is -22.86 %, and the value of maximum ratio of Nusselt number augmentation is 7.05% when the riblet angle is $60^{\circ}$. The remarkable point is that the ratio of Nusselt number augmentation has the positive value for the surface shapes which have over $45^{\circ}$ of the riblet angle. The maximum volume and area goodness factors are obtained when the riblet angle is $60^{\circ}$.

  • A prior fundamental study was executed using a constant volume chamber (CVC) to improve the burning characteristics of lean pre-mixture by the injection of active radicals generated in the sub-chamber of the CVC. The Radical ignition (RI) technique shows remarkable progress in the burning velocity and combustible lean limit compared with the results of the spark ignition (SI) technique. The optimum design value of the sub-chamber geometry is near $0.11cm^{-1}$ for the ratio of the total area of the holes to the sub-chamber volume $(A_h/V_s)$. In this study, based on the former experimental results, the additional works have been performed to examine the effects of the geometry change in the number $(N_h)$, the total section area $(A_h)$, and diameter $(D_h)$ of the passage holes on the combustion characteristics in the CVC. Also ambient conditions such as the initial temperature and the initial pressure of the mixture were selected as experimental parameters and the effects of residual gas at the chamber on the combustion characteristics were investigated. As a result, the correlation between the passage hole number and overall passage hole area was grasped. The effects of the initial temperature were significant, but on the other hand, those of the initial pressure were weak. A more detailed analysis on the residual gas is required in the future.

  • Accidents between ships occur frequently at the traffic congestion area. Once a maritime accidents occur, it is likely to end up with critical damaged accidents. This paper develop a simulator for assessing quantitative risk based on statical maritime traffic data and realtime traffic distribution. Ship's passage risk assessment simulator consist of import of division of passage data, traffic distribution analysis and passage risk assessment analysis. Maritime traffic data of WANDO waterway apply to simulator for calculation of quantitative risk rate of waterway.
