COMBINED EFFECTS OF BD20, LOW SULFUR DIESEL FUEL AND DIESEL OXIDATION CATALYST IN A HD DIESEL ENGINE

  • The enormous increase in the use of fossil energy sources throughout the world has caused severe air pollution and a depletion of energy. Besides, it seems very difficult to comply with the upcoming stringent emission standards in vehicles. In order to develop low emission engines, research on better qualified fuels as alternative fuels to secure high engine performance becomes a more important issue than ever. Since sulfur contained in diesel fuel is transformed in sulfate-laden particulate matters when a catalyst is applied, it is necessary to provide low sulfur fuels before any Pt-based oxidation catalysts are applied. But the excessive reduction of sulfur levels may cause the lubricity of fuel and engine performance to degrade. In this aspect, biodiesel fuel derived from rice bran is applied to compensate viscosity lost in the desulfurization treatment. This research is focused on the performance of an 11,000cc diesel engine and the emission characteristics by the introduction of ULSD(Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel), BD20(Diesel 80%+Biodiesel 20%) and a diesel oxidation catalyst, where BD20 is used to improve the lubricity of fuel in fuel injection systems as fuel additives or alternative fuels.

  • Particulate matters (PM) that is generated by most diesel engine is regulated by the mass concentration measured by the conventional method it had been. Recently, Europe PMP (Particle Measurement Program) decided to start the regulation of vehicle's nano-sized particle number (PN) from the year of 2011 because of nano-particle's higher degree of harm to the human body. So firstly, the standard level of PN emission is introduced in the Euro 5/6 emissions regulation with a limit of $6{\times}10^{11}$ per km for light duty vehicle. Also KPMP(Korea Particle Measurement Program) was organized to copy quickly international technical trend. In this paper, it was investigated the nano-sized PN measurement characteristics for different particle generators between spray type and soot type. And the difference ratio between particle generators, the characteristic of PN concentration, counting efficiency and linearity was analyzed. Then, we make conclusions as followed. When particle diameter is increased, counting efficiency of two generators is decreased. Also Secondary calibration method is more higher 3% than Primary calibration method. Finally, SOF which is included in soot particles is not totally removed so it have great influence on test result of counting efficiency and linearity.

도시 지하역사 미세먼지제어를 위한 이중여과장치의 현장적용 연구 (Field Application of a Double Filtration Process to Control Fine Dust in a Metro Subway Station)

  • This study attempted to find an alternative method for fine dust control in the pre-exiting facilities of metro-subway stations. A new double-layer design was proposed for the MVAC (mechanical ventilation and air control) system. Several filter lay-outs were combined a pre-filter with electret filter (EF), electret bundle filter (EBF), or electret pleated filter (EPF), and were then examined focusing on the collection efficiency of particulate matters and pressure drop across the filter layers. The experimental results from the lab and field tests showed the best collection efficiency with EPF, which achieved 85% for $PM_{10}$ and 55% for $PM_{2.5}$. It was also found from the long term field test that the new filter lay-out could provide quite consistent dust level particularly in underground platform regardless of external condition.

Particulate Matters($PM_{10}$ and Particle-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAHs) in Indoor and Outdoor Air in New and Sick Houses

  • $PM_{10}$ and 16 PAHs were measured in indoor and outdoor air of 5 different old houses, new and sick houses, respectively. $PM_{10}$ concentrations measured in indoor of three different kinds of houses ranged from 23 to 43 ${\mu}g/m^3$ and in outdoor ranged in 40-64 ${\mu}g/m^3$. Sum of average concentrations of PAHs in old, new and sick houses indoor air were 3.7 $ng/m^3$, 6.6 $ng/m^3$ and 16.1 $ng/m^3$, respectively, which were lower than those of outdoors. Most of the indoor/outdoor ratio for PAHs in each house were less than 1.0 and significant correlation(p<0.05) between indoor and outdoor samples was observed.

군 병영시설의 실내 공기질 평가 및 특성 (The Assessment and Characteristics for Indoor Air Quality in Military Barracks)

  • In this study, the Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) in military barracks is evaluated and its characteristics is discussed as well. The military barracks of R.O.K Army are categorized into three types and the IAQ in these individual facilities is measured for 24 hours both in summer and winter. Test results show that the particulate matters($PM_{10}$) and carbon dioxide($CO_2$) were the main causes contaminating IAQ in military barracks. While $CO_2$ can be purified by ventilation, adequate facilities have to be installed in case of the new type of combination barracks to remove $PM_{10}$. In addition, to improve the living condition of military barracks and to recover IAQ in new combination style barracks which is planned to complete by 2011, a standard or law regulating IAQ in military barracks has to be established.

  • The increasing numbers of automobiles keep causing air-pollution problems worse than ever. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modern technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. This research emphasized on the development of Continuously Regenerating DPF technology which was the best particulate matters removing technology of current existing technology because of its superior comparability and high applicability. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a Continuously Regenerating DPF ona displacement 7,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on engine performance and characteristics on exhaust emissions with the application of a Continuously Regenerating DPF in a heavy-duty diesel vehicle.

  • As the standard of living is higher, the passengers using public transportations desire better qualities of environment as well as more comfortable indoor environment. In case of train, the passengers' comfort in passenger cabin is one of the most important elements to be competitive with other transport systems. The indoor air quality of the cabin should be managed properly, because many passengers travel for a long time in the small space of $144\;m^3$. For proper management of the air quality, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is required for the ventilation of the compartment. To maintain comfortable environment in the compartment, the automatic ventilation system is needed to exchange the indoor air with fresh air or clean indoor air. In this study, we investigated the indoor air quality (PM-10, $CO_2$, and VOCs) in the compartment of train. In addition, type and pattern of PM-10 has been analyzed through the clustering analysis. Based on the analysis, we could found that the fine particulate matters in the compartment can be a serious hazard to human. To control the concentration of PM-10 and $CO_2$ air cleaners were developed. Through this study, it is expected that people who take a train will be in a more comfortable environment.

W-Station을 활용한 고밀도 초미세먼지 모니터링 연구: 제주도 사례 (A study on the monitoring of high-density fine particulate matters using W-station: Case of Jeju island)

  • Although interest in air quality has increased due to the frequent occurrence of high-concentration fine particulate matter recently, the official fine particulate matter measuring network has failed to provide spatial detailed air quality information. This is because current measurement equipment has a high cost of installation and maintenance, which limits the composition of the measuring network at high resolution. To compensate for the limitations of the current official measuring network, this study constructed a spatial high density measuring network using the fine particulate matter simple measuring device developed by Observer, W-Station. W-Station installed 48 units on Jeju Island and measured PM2.5 for six months. The data collected in W-Station were corrected by applying the first regression equation for each section, and these measurements were compared and analyzed based on the official measurements installed in Jeju Island. As a result, the time series of PM2.5 concentrations measured in W-Station showed concentration characteristics similar to those of the environmental pollution measuring network. In particular, the results of comparing the measurements of W-Station within a 2 km radius of the reference station and the reference station showed that the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.79, 0.81, 0.67, respectively. In addition, for W-Station within a 1 km radius, the coefficient of determination was 0.85, 0.82, 0.68, respectively, showing slightly higher correlation. In addition, the local concentration deviation of some regions could be confirmed through 48 high density measuring networks. These results show that if a network of measurements is constructed with adequate spatial distribution using a number of simple meters with a certain degree of proven performance, the measurements are effective in monitoring local air quality and can be fully utilized to supplement or replace formal measurements.

국내공정시험기준과 ISO 방법을 이용한 고정오염원 미세먼지 (PM10, PM2.5) 측정 방법 및 입경분율 비교: 석탄화력발전소, 석유정제시설 중심으로 (Comparison of Measurement Methods and Size Fraction of Fine Particles (PM10, PM2.5) from Stationary Emission Source Using Korean Standard and ISO: Coal Power Plant and Refinery)

  • We report mass concentration and size fraction of TPM, $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ according to Korea standard test method (ES 01301.1 and ES 01317.1) and ISO 23210 methods. Particulate matters were sampled in large stationary emission sources such as a coal power plant and B-C oil refinery. The Korea standard test method PM mass concentrations showed 3~3.5 times larger than the cascade impactor method. On the other hand, the size fraction results showed less than 5% difference (i.e. $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$) between two methods. Moreover, the correlation coefficient ($r^2$) is 0.84 between TPM results of the Korea standard test method and CleanSYS. These results suggested not only improvement of current test criteria in terms of technical and theoretical aspects. Further, additional measurements are required in various large stationary sources to compare current field data.

직화구이 음식점 방지시설의 오염물질 저감 효과 평가 - 전기집진방식을 중심으로 - (Evaluation of Removal Efficiency in Emission Pollutants by Air Pollution Prevention Facilities from Meat Grilled Restaurants - Focus on the Electrostatic Precipitator -)

  • The emission gas from meat grilled restaurants has unpleasant odor and sticky particulate matters (PM) in form of oil mist. This affects the residents living nearby. In oder to decrease the odor and PM, electrostatic precipitators (ESP) were installed at several restaurants by support of Seoul metropolitan government and emission characteristics of PM and odor were investigated. The removal efficiency of odor and PM at before- and after-ESP was that total hydrocarbon (THC), NH3, H2S, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde were not much decreased. Total suspended particles (TSP) emitted from the vent was below the value of 7 mg/m3 regardless of the concentration of before-ESP and removal efficiency was in the range of 64 ~ 86%. The ratio of PM1.0 to PM10 of emission gas was over 0.9. So it was revealed that most PM of emission gas was PM1.0. The PM concentration in the air of the street near the vent was higher than another street due to the emission gas and the PM of indoor air of restaurant grilling meats was measured very high compared to outdoor air. So it needs more powerful ventilation of indoor air.
