The Effect of Particle Size Distribution of the Nongraphitic Carbon on the Performance of Negative Carbon Electrode in Lithium Ion Secondary Battery (무정형 탄소의 입도분포에 따른 리튬이온이차전지의 탄소부극 특성)

  • Material and electrochemical characteristics of petroleum coke of the nongraphitic carbon prepated with attrition milling for 6~48 hours and heat-treatment at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour was investigated. The milling condition affects the particle size distribution, BET specific surface area and interlayer distance of petroleum cokes. Carbon electrode with petroleum cokes prepared at the milling time of 12~24 hours and having average particle size of $6{\sim}8{\mu}m$ showed best electrochemical characteristics form the investigation of cyclic voltammogram and charge-discharge characteristics.

  • Indoor air quality is of increasing concern because it is closely related human health. An air handling unit (AHU) can be used to control the indoor air quality related to particulate matters and $CO_2$ as well as air conditioning such as temperature and humidity of indoor air. An electrostatic precipitator has a high collection efficiency and low pressure drop, however, ozone can possibly generate from its chargers, which is one of drawbacks to apply it for indoor air control. Here we compared four charging electrodes such as a $50{\mu}m$ tungsten wire, a $100{\mu}m$ tungsten wire, a $16{\mu}m$-thickness Al foil and a carbon fabric comprised of $5-10{\mu}m$ fibers. The carbon fabric electrode showed a superior particle collection efficiency and a lower ozone generation at a given power consumption compared to tungsten wires of 50, $100{\mu}m$ and an Al foil electrode. This low ozone generating, micro-sized electrode can be applied to the electrostatic precipitator in AHU for indoor air control.

  • The trajectories of PCB(Printed Circuit Board) particles in the corona discharge electrostatic separation was simulated. The PCB particles are prepared by crushing bare board, which disassembled from electronic components, consist mostly of copper and FR-4(Flame Retardant Level-4) Firstly, a model was established for calculating of detachment points of PCB particles from the rotating electrode in separator. The model of detachment points was derived from equilibrium of force such as gravity force, centrifugal force, electrostatic force. The trajectories of particles after detachment was calculated by acceleration derived from time-integrating method of motion equation. In this simulation, particle size, supplied voltage, rotation speed of rotating roll electrode and angle of induction electrode were adopted as variables. While the trajectories of FR-4 particles were affected by all variables, rotation speed of rotating roll electrode was dominant variables affecting trajectories of copper particles.

Electric field distribution and discharge characteristics in accordance with various ITO electrode structures in AC-PDP

  • In this study, the electric field distributions have been investigated by simulation in accordance with the various shapes of ITO-electrodes. Also we have measured the density of excited Xe atoms in the 1s5 state in discharge cell, where the gap distance of 60 um, gas pressure of 400 Torr, Xe contents of 7%, and sustaining voltage of 200 V are kept in this experiment. The maximum density of excited Xe atoms in the 1s5 state in a discharge cell for the fish-boned, T shaped and squared ITO electrodes have been measured to be $3.01\;{\times}\;10^{13}\;cm^{-3}$, $2.66\;{\times}\;10^{13}\;cm^{-3}$ and $2.06\;{\times}\;10^{13}\;cm^{-3}$, respectively. It is shown that the electric field distribution with different ITO Electrodes is essential factor for these maximum density of excited Xe atoms in discharge cell.

  • In this paper, the behavior and effect of conducting particles in a $SF_6$ insulated electrode system, are presented. It is shown that the bouncing voltage of the particle is independent of particle length, and that the breakdown voltages are affected by the particle length. The longer the particle, the lower the breakdown voltages. The bouncing-off, the lift off and breakdown voltages increase as the particle diameter increase. The breakdown voltage of free particle is lower than fixed particle on the enclosure.

  • In this work, TCO-less dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) using Ti-mesh layer is fabricated for high-efficient low-cost solar cell application. The Ti-mesh metal can replace TCO in the photo-electrode part of DSCs, thus the cell structure is composed of a glass/dye sensitized TiO2 particle/ Ti-mesh layer/electrolyte/Pt sputtered counter electrode/ glass. The Ti-mesh electrode with high conductivity can collect electrons from the $TiO_2$ layer and allows the ionic diffusion of $I^-/I_3^-$ through the mesh hole. Thin Ti-mesh ($\sim40{\mu}m$ in thickness) electrode material is processed using rapid prototype method. The efficiency of prepared TCO-less DSCs sample is about 1.45 % ((ff: 0.5, Voc: 0.52V, Jsc: 5.55 $mA/cm^2$).

  • A micro particle manipulator, which is devised for trapping particles at fixed positions by negative dielectrophoretic force (DEP force), has been fabricated and experimented. It is composed of square type electrode arrays fabricated by nickel electroplating with the height of 28 ${\mu}m$. To improve the quality of electroplated nickel electrodes, plating conditions have been optimized. Micro particles used in this study are polystyrene spheres and their to the specific position and trapped. The DEP force along the moving path of the particles has been estimated by the motion equation of a single particle. The displacement of a particle with an elapsed time was measured using a high-speed camera (1000 frames/sec). The velocity and acceleration of the particle were calculated from the measured data. The DEP force acting on the particle was estimated.

  • The improvement of luminance and luminous efficiency is the one of the most important part in AC-PDPs. To achieve high luminance and luminous efficiency, high VUV emission efficiency is needed. We measured the emission spectra of vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) and infrared(IR) rays in surface discharge AC-PDP with Ne-Xe mixture gas. The influence of Ne-Xe gas-mixture ratio on resonance state $Xe^{\ast}(3P_{1})$ and exited state $Xe^{\ast}(3P_{2})$ has been investigated. It is found that the intensity of VUV 147nm emission is proportional to that of the IR 828 nm emission, and the VUV 173nm emission is roughly proportional to that of the IR 823nm emission. The electron temperature and plasma density have been experimentally measured from the center of sustaining electrode gap by a micro Langmuir probe in AC-PDPs. The plasma density from the center of sustaining electrode gap are shown to be maximum value of $9{\times}10^{11}cm^{-3}$, where the electron temperature is about 1.6 eV in this experiment

  • The Faraday cup electrode of different size has been developed and evaluated to investigate the diffusion effect of particles by Brownian motion in a particle beam mass spectrometer(PBMS). Particles which focused and accelerated by aerodynamic lens are charged to saturation in an electron beam, and then deflected electrostatically into a Faraday cup detector for measurement of the particle current. The concentration of particles is converted from currents detected by Faraday cup. Measurements of particle current as a function of deflection voltage are combined with measured relationships between particle velocity and diameter, charge and diameter, and mass and diameter, to determine the particle size distribution. The particle currents were measured using 5, 10, 20, 40 mm sized Faraday cup that can be move to one direction by motion shaft. The current difference for each sizes as a function of position was compared to figure out diffusion effect during transport. Polystyrene latex(PSL) 100, 200 nm sized standard particles were used for evaluation. The measurement using 5 mm sized Faraday cup has the highest resolution in a diffusion distance and the smaller particles had widely diffused.
