  • Effect of electrostatic and inertial forces on the pre-charged particle deposition was theoretically and experimentally studied by introducing the inertia impactor subjected to an electric field. To derive the analytic solution, we assumed that a flow was an ideal stagnation flow, a particle had saturation charges, and the electric field within the test section was uniform. On the other hand, $Al_2O_3$ particle groups were used as the test particles, which mean sizes were $1{\mu}m$, $3{\mu}m$, and $5{\mu}m$. To measure the deposition efficiency, the light scattering method was used. The results showed that the deposition efficiency was minimized at a certain nozzle velocity as increasing the nozzle velocity, only if the electric force was applied. As the electric field strength increased, $Stk_{50}{^{1/2}}$ was decreased, and its decreasing rate was reduced with increasing the flow velocity. Moreover the existence of electric field was against the cut-off performance of the inertia impactor.

  • To regulate the safety protocols in nuclear facilities, radioactive aerosols have been extensively researched to understand their health impacts. However, most measured particle-size distributions remain at low resolutions, with the particle sizes ranging from nanometer to micrometer. This study combines the high-resolution detection of 500 size classes, ranging from 6 nm to 10 ㎛, for aerodynamic diameter distributions, with a regional lung deposition calculation. We applied the new approach to characterize particle-size distributions of aerosols generated during the plasma arc cutting of simulated non-radioactive steel alloy wastes. The high-resolution measured data were used to calculate the deposition ratios of the aerosols in different lung regions. The deposition ratios in the alveolar sacs contained the dominant particle sizes ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 ㎛. We determined the distribution of various metals using different vapor pressures of the alloying components and analyzed the uncertainties of lung deposition calculations using the low-resolution aerodynamic diameter data simultaneously. In high-resolution data, the changes in aerosols that can penetrate the blood system were better captured, correcting their potential risks by a maximum of 42%. The combined calculations can aid the enhancement of high-resolution measuring equipment to effectively manage radiation safety in nuclear facilities.

  • One of the important problems in recent AC-PDP technology is the image sticking. In this research, we have investigated the PDP cell with constraint deposition MgO on phosphor, the electrical and optical properties in the PDP cell were examined. Also, we have investigated the correlation with image sticking and degraded MgO protective layer, phosphor in AC-PDP. As a result, we measured the secondary electron emission coefficient ${\gamma}$, discharge characteristics and Brightness for the constraint degraded phosphor are compared with those of nondegraded phosphor.

  • In this study, the two dimensional morphology of particle accumulates on a cylindrical fiber was numerically simulated when a uniform external electric field was present across a cylindrical fiber. In order to investigate the mechanism of linear dendrite formation which is observed under the above electrostatic condition, the electrostatic forces between a newly introduced particle and each deposited particle were calculated and compared with those between the particle and fiber As a result of this study it was found that dielectrophoretic forces between the oncoming particle and fiber play principal roles in linear dendrite formation.

  • The dry deposition fluxes of particulate polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured along with their mass size distributions at Seoul and Incheon in fall in 1999. The dry deposition fluxes of PCBs were in the range of $16.7{\sim}62.2ng/m^2/day$. The ambient concentrations of particulate PCBs were in the range of 0.07 to $0.20ng/m^3$. Generally, the mass size distribution of particulate PCBs shows bi-modal distribution. The mass fraction of PCBs in the fine particle fraction ($D_p<2.1 {\mu}m$) was over than 55% of the total PCBs concentrations. It was found that Seoul and Incheon were not the major source of PCBs emissions in Korea. Based on the comparison with the measurement data in summer, 1999, it is likely that both the dry deposition fluxes and ambient particulate PCBs concentrations were not site-specific.

  • Mass and elemental dry deposition fluxes and ambient particle size distributions were measured using dry deposition plates, a cascade impactor. and a CPS(Coarse Particle Sampler), from July to November 1998 in Seoul. Korea. Primarily anthropogenic elemental fluxes (Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) were on average one to two orders of magnitude lower than primarily crustal elements (Al, Ca). Complete total and elemental particle size distributions showed trimodal size distributions due to the peak in particles larger than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter. A multi-step model and the Sehmel-Hodgson model were used to calculate total and cumulative deposition fluxes. The result indicated that dry deposition fluxes were extremely sensitive to the mass of particles larger than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter due to their high dry deposition velocities. The result showed that particles larger than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter dominated atmospheric dry deposition. The modeled fluxes calculated using the measured atmospheric particle size distributions and modeled deposition velocities were compared to measured ones. In general, the measured mass and elemental fluxes agreed well with the modeled ones.

  • The present study has proposed a novel aerosol CVD utilizing an internal jet in the conventional MCVD reactor for the purpose of enhancing the deposition efficiency(and rate) and the uniformity of deposited film. The use of impingement of high temperature jet through a thin inner tube ensures the reduction of non-uniform particle deposition zone as well as higher thermophoretic particle deposition. It is shown that significant improvements have been achieved for both aspects of deposition efficiency and uniformity. As jet temperatures increase, the tapered length is reduced and deposition efficiency is significantly increased.

  • For fabricating high T$\sub$c/ superconducting deposition film, novel electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique applied to deposit surface charged particles on metal substrate with only d.c field has been studied. However, the electric properties of superconducting film could not be improved easily by this way, because the particles of EPD film were usually deposited randomly on metal substrate without any directional orientation affected to its critical current density. For the purpose of obtaining partcle orientation on the EPD films, the new method modified by a.c. assisted field to the conventional electrophoresis system was investigated to improve the particle deposition density and to increase the contacting area among the particles with highly oriented particle deposition of BSCCO superconducting film.

  • We have examined minimization of the number of impurity particles by replacing the load-lock chamber materials of the chemical vapor deposition equipment through optimization of the pumping method in the deposition chamber. In order to reduce the number of impurity particles in the chamber, the load-lock spacer material was changed from monomer casting nylon to Torlon. Furthermore, we controlled the pumping speed and number of pumping ports, which resulted in a reduction in the impurity particle generation from 2.67% to 0.52%. This study revealed that the selection of the material for the parts of a chemical vapor deposition chamber can minimize particle generation, thereby presenting a method of optimization method of the chemical vapor deposition chamber.

  • To investigate thermophoretic effect on particle deposition, average deposition velocity toward a horizontal wafer surface in vertical airflow is measured keeping the wafer surface temperature different from the surrounding air temperature. In the present measurement, the temperature difference is maintained in the range from -10 to $4^{\circ}$ C Polystyrene latex (PSL) spheres of diameter between 0.3 and 0.8 .mu.m are used for the experiment. The number of particles deposited on a wafer surface is estimated from the measurements using a wafer surface scanner (PMS SAS-3600). Experimental data are compared with prediction model results.
