A numerical method is proposed to calculate the response of detectors measuring particle energies from incident isotropic fluxes of electrons and positive ions. The isotropic flux is generated by injecting particles moving radially inward on a hypothetical, spherical surface encompassing the detectors. A geometric projection of the field-of-view from the detectors onto the spherical surface allows for the identification of initial positions and momenta corresponding to the clear field-of-view of the detectors. The contamination of detector responses by particles penetrating through, or scattering off, the structure is also similarly identified by tracing the initial positions and momenta of the detected particles. The relative contribution from the contaminating particles is calculated using GEANT4 to obtain the geometric factor of the instrument as a function of the energy. This calculation clearly shows that the geometric factor is a strong function of incident particle energies. The current investigation provides a simple and decisive method to analyze the instrument geometric factor, which is a complicated function of contributions from the anticipated field-of-view particles, together with penetrating or scattered particles.
Northeastward drifts of massive Sargassum patches were observed in the East China Sea (ECS) and Yellow Sea (YS) by the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) in May 2017. Coverage of the brown macroalgae patches was the largest ever recorded in the ECS and YS. Three-dimensional circulation modeling and Lagrangian particle tracking simulations were conducted to reproduce drifting trajectories of the macroalgae patches. The trajectories of the macroalgae patches were controlled by winds as well as surface currents. A windage (leeway) factor of 1% was chosen based on sensitivity simulations. Southerly winds in May 2017 contributed to farther northward intrusion of the brown macroalgae into the YS. Although satellite observation and numerical modeling have their own limitations and associated uncertainties, the two methods can be combined to find the best estimate of Sargassum patch trajectories. When satellites were unable to capture all patches because of clouds and sea fog in the ECS and YS, the Lagrangian particle tracking model helped to track and restore the missing patches in satellite images. This study suggests that satellite monitoring and numerical modeling are complementary to ensure accurate tracking of macroalgae patches in the ECS and YS.

Magnetic separators that clean the fluid stream from impurities, protect the installations in numerous industries. This paper introduces a graphical user interface (GUI) which proposes an optimized coil separating magnetic particles with a radius from 1 up to 500 µm. High gradient magnetic fields are employed in an arbitrary user defined fluidic channel which is made of a nonmetallic material. The effects of coil parameters are studied and adjusted to design an optimum coil with a minimum Ohmic loss. In addition, to design the coil scheme based on the particle movements, a mathematical particle-tracing model within the fluid channels has been utilized. In comparison to conventional magnetic separators, this model is reconfigurable by the user, produces a weaker magnetic field, allows for continuous purifying and is easy to install, with high separation efficiency. The presented GUI is simple to use, where the coil's manufacturing limitations can be specified.

We have investigated the light extraction efficiency of large-area OLED lighting panels with a microlens array (MLA) or external scattering layer (ESL) by ray tracing simulation. The application of MLA and ESL to transparent OLEDs (TOLEDs) with an auxiliary metal electrode is also studied. It is found that MLA shows higher light extraction efficiency, compared with ESL. However, we have demonstrated that ESL is more suitable for TOLEDs having dual-sided equal light emission. Namely, equal light emission from the front and rear surfaces of TOLED can be achieved by increasing the scattering particle density of ESL. To compensate for a loss in light emission induced by auxiliary metal electrode, we come out with an OLED structure partially covered with MLA at the outer surface of glass substrate, which is aligned with metal electrode. With this scheme, it is observed that the light extraction efficiency can be boosted more than 20% from opaque OLED and 50% from transparent OLED.

Purpose: This study investigates the influences of coughing direction and healthcare worker's location on the transport characteristics of coughed particles in airborne infection isolation room (AIIR), which is commonly called negative pressure isolation room, with a downward ventilation system. Methods: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate the airflow and for tracing the behavior of particles. Results: The results show that the airflow pattern and coughing direction have a significant influence on the characteristics of particle dispersion and deposition. When healthcare workers are in the isolation room with the patient who is lying on the bed, it is recommended to be located far from the anteroom to reduce the exposures from infectious particles. And when the patient is lying, it is more effective in removing particles than when the patient is in Fowler's position. Although it is an isolation room that produces unidirectional flow, coughing particles can spread to the whole room and a large number of particles can be deposited onto patient, bed, side rails, healthcare worker, ceiling, floor, and sidewall. Implications: Following the patients' discharge or transfer, terminal cleaning of the vacated room, furniture, and all clinical equipment is essential. Also, it is necessary to establish detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) in order to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

In an effort to improve water quality, the South Korean government has implemented measures to increase seawater circulation in Saemangeum Lake. We analyzed the effect of increasing the frequency of seawater circulation based on salinity levels and bottom water exchange in the lake, using an environmental fluid dynamics code model. When the sluice gate opening and shutting frequency increased from once to twice per day, the internal water level of Saemangeum Lake increased by up to ~0.7 m. The salinity increased by 2.12 psu near the western breakwater and decreased by 1.18 psu near the freshwater inlet. We analyzed the extent of bottom water exchange using a particle tracing method and observed that the residual rate of particles shallower than 5 m in water depth decreased by 2.52% in Case 2 (opening and shutting twice per day) compared to Case 1 (opening and shutting once per day). This indicates that increasing the frequency of sluice gate opening and shutting would promote enhanced bottom water exchange. Consequently, the increased salinity and bottom water exchange associated with increased seawater circulation are expected to improve water quality in Saemangeum Lake.
The objective of the present study is to visualize the pulsatile flow fields by using three-dimensional computer simulation and the PIV system. A closed flow loop system was built for the steady and unsteady experiments. The Harvard pulsatile pump was used to generate the pulsatile pressure and velocity waveforms. Conifer powder as the tracing particles was added to water to visualize the flow field. Two consecutive particle images were captured by a CCO camera for the image processing at several cross section. The range validation and the area interpolation methods were used to obtain the final velocity vectors with high accuracy. The finite volume predictions were used to analyze three-dimensional flow patterns in the bifurcation model. The results of the PIV experiment and the computer simulation are in good agreement and the results show the recirculation zones and formation of the paired secondary flow distal to the apex of the bifurcated model. The results also show that the branch flow is pushed strongly to the inner wall due to the inertial force effect and helical motions are generated as the flow proceeds toward the outer wall.

A hybrid particle-mesh method based on the vorticity-velocity formulation for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is a combination of the Vortex-In-Cell(VIC) method for convection and the penalization method for diffusion. The key feature of the numerical methods is to determine velocity and vorticity fields around a solid body on a temporary grid, and then the time evolution of the flow is computed by tracing the convection of each vortex element using the Lagrangian approach. Assuming that the vorticity and velocity fields are to be computed in time domain analysis, pressure fields are estimated through a complete set of solutions at present time step. It is possible to obtain vorticity and velocity fields prior to any pressure calculation since the pressure term is eliminated in the vorticity-velocity formulation. Therefore, pressure field is explicitly treated by solving a suitable Poisson equation. In this paper, we propose a simple way to numerically implement the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation including a penalty term. For validation of the proposed numerical scheme, we illustrate the early development of viscous flows around an impulsive started circular cylinder for Reynolds number of 9500.

The purpose of this study is to find out a flow characteristics required by the design of a computer case and to provide information about the preliminary data of cooling efficiency of CPU and a flow inside of a case. We examined a flow characteristic-suction a tracing particle occurred from a surge tand installed at an inlet into a computer case and moving it to a exit duct-experimentally by using PIV. The experimental device was consists of a fan inflowing and discharging the air into the computer case and a slot installed with a CPU cooling ran add-on, and analyzed the data of Re-stress distribution, velocity distribution, and kinetic energy distribution. This research will make a great contribution to improvement of the efficiency and performance of notebook, workstation, server, and all the design of electronic devices using large scale integrated(LSI) as well as usual computers.
