  • Recently, high electrochemical performance anode materials for lithium ion secondary batteries are of interest. Here, we present silicon-carbon-graphene (Si-C-GR) composites for high performance anode materials of lithium ion secondary battery (LIB). Aerosol process and heat-treatment were employed to prepare the Si-C-GR composites using a colloidal mixture of silicon, glucose, and graphene oxide precursor. The effects of the size of the silicon particles in Si-C-GR composites on the material properties including the morphology and crystal structure were investigated. Silicon particles ranged from 50 nm to 1 ㎛ in average diameter were employed while concentration of silicon, graphene oxide and glucose was fixed in the aerosol precursor. Morphology of as-fabricated Si-C-GR composites was generally the shape of a crumpled paper ball and the Si particles were well wrapped in carbon and graphene. The size range of composites was about from 2.2 to 2.9 ㎛. The composites including silicon particles larger than 200 nm in size exhibited higher performance as LIB anodes such as capacity and coulombic efficiency than silicon particles less than 100 nm, which were about 1500 mAh/g at 100 cycles in capacity and 99% in coulombic efficiency, respectively.

  • Structural studies have been performed on precipitation hardening discovered in $L1_2-ordered\;Ni_3(Al,Cr)$ containing 0.2 to 3.0 mol% of carbon using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fine octahedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ appeared in the matrix by aging at temperatures around 973 K after solution treatment at 1423 K. TEM examination revealed that the $M_{23}C_6$ phase and the matrix lattices have a cube-cube orientation relationship and keep partial atomic matching at the {111} interface. After prolonged aging or by aging at higher temperatures, the $M_{23}C_6$ precipitates then adopt a rod-like morphology elongated parallel to the <100> directions. Deformation at temperature below 973 K, typical Orowan loops were observed surrounding the $M_{23}C_6$ particles. At higher deformation temperatures, the Orowan loops disappeared and the morphology of dislocations at the particle-matrix interfaces suggested the existence of attractive interaction between dislocations and particles. The change of the interaction modes between dislocation and particles with increasing deformation temperature can be considered as a result of strain relaxation at the interface between matrix and particles.

  • Rod shaped Potassium hexatitanate ($K_2Ti_6O_{13}$) was synthesized from colloidal mixture of $TiO_2$, KOH and graphene oxide (GO) by aerosol spray drying and post heat treatment. Firstly, $TiO_2-KOH-GO$ composites were fabricated by aerosol spray drying in argon atmosphere. The composites were then calcined to form a rod shaped morphology of potassium titanate (KTO) in the presence of graphene at $900^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in argon atmosphere. Finally, the rod shaped KTO was obtained after removal of graphene (GR) at $800^{\circ}C$ and 3 h in air atmosphere. Characterization of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ was carried out using the XRD, BET and FE-SEM. The length and diameter of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ could be controlled by weight fraction of GO in the aerosol precursor. The length of $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ rod increased with decreasing its diameter as GO concentration increased. The aspect ratio of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ rod was controlled from 5 to 13.

  • In additive manufacturing, the flowability of feedstock particles determines the quality of the parts that are affected by different parameters, including the chemistry and morphology of the powders and particle size distribution. In this study, the microstructures and flowabilities of gas-atomized heat-resistant alloys for additive manufacturing applications are investigated. A KHR45A alloy powder with a composition of Fe-30Cr-40Mn-1.8Nb (wt.%) is fabricated using gas atomization process. The microstructure and effect of powder chemistry and morphology on the flow behavior are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and revolution powder analysis. The results reveal the formation of spherical particles composed of single-phase FCC dendritic structures after gas atomization. SEM observations show variations in the microstructures of the powder particles with different size distributions. Elemental distribution maps, line scans, and high-resolution XPS results indicate the presence of a Si-rich oxide accompanied by Fe, Cr, and Nb metal oxides in the outer layer of the powders. The flowability behavior is found to be induced by the particle size distribution, which can be attributed to the interparticle interactions and friction of particles with different sizes.

  • Hydrophobic Organic-Inorganic (O-I) hybrid materials prepared by sol-gel process have been widely used at functional coating fields such as coatings for anti-corrosion, anti-icing, self-cleaning, anti-reflection. The key point for fabricating hydrophobic surface is to optimize the surface energy and roughness of the coating films. There are typical processes to control the surface energy and roughness which are 'In situ fabricating', 'Pre-fluorinating/Post-roughening', 'Pre-roughening/ Post-fluorinating'. In this study, particle-binder process was used for in-situ fabrication of hydrophobic coating films. Various O-I hybrid compounds prepared using several kinds of alkoxysilane compounds were used as a binder for silica nanoparticles at particle-binder process. To study effect of fluorine content and weight ratio of particle : binder on the hydrophobicity and surface morphology, Hydrophobic coating films were prepared onto glass substrate at various content of fluorine content of O-I hybrid binder and weight ratio of particle : binder. The coating films prepared using O-I hybrid binder (GPTi-HF10) having 10 wt% of fluorine content showed the highes water contact angle (107.52±1.6°). The coating films prepared at 1:3 weight ratio of GPTi-HF10 : silica nanoparticle exhibited the highest water contact angle (130.84±1.99°).

  • A chemically stabilized $\beta$-cristobalite, which is stabilized by stuffing cations of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Al^{3+}$, was prepared by a solution-polymerization route employing Pechini resin or PVA solution as a polymeric carrier. The polymeric carrier affected the crystallization temperature, morphology of calicined powder, and particle size distribution. In case of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution process, a fine $\beta$-cristobalite powder with a narrow particle size distribution (average particle size : 0.3$\mu\textrm{m}$) and a BET specific surface area of 72 $\m^2$/g was prepared by an attrition-milling for 1 h after calcination at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Wider particle size distribution and higher specific surface area were observed for the $\beta$-cristobalite powder derived from Pechini resin. The cubie(P1-to-tetraganalb) phase transformation in polynystalline $\beta$-cristobalite was induced at approximately 18$0^{\circ}C$. Like other materials showing transformation toughening, a critical size effect controlled the $\beta$-to-$\alpha$ transformation. Densifed cristobalite sample had some cracks in its internal texture after annealing. The cracks, occurred spontaneoulsy on cooling, were observed in the sample with an average grain sizes of 4.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ or above. In case of the sintered cristobalite having a composition of CaO.$2Al_2O_3$.40SiO$_2$, small amount of amorphous phase and slow grain growth during annealing were observed. Shear stress-induced transformation was also observed in ground specimen. Cristobalite having a composition of CaO.2Al2O3.80SiO2 showed a more sensitive response to shear stress than the CaO.$2Al_2O_3$.40SiO$_2$ type cristobalite. Shear-induced transformation resulted in an increase of volume about 13% in $\alpha$-cristobalite phase on annealing for above 10 h in the case of the former composition.

  • In this work, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were synthesized using a N2-diluted hydrogen coflow diffusion flame. The effects of flame temperature on the crystalline structure and the size of formed nanoparticles were investigated. The maximum centerline temperature of the flame ranged from 1,920K for $H_2-only$ flame to 863k for $81\%\;N_2-diluted$ flame. The morphology and the crystal structure of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were analyzed by a TEM and a XRD, respectively. The particle size distribution was also measured by using a scanning mobility particle size. (SMPS). The mean particle diameter was calculated from the TEM images depended on the flame temperature, having minimum at about 1,look. Based on the SMPS measurements, the mean particle diameter of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles at flame temperatures > 1,300K was smaller than that at flame temperatures < 1,300K. From the XRD analysis, it was evident that the anatase fraction increased with decreasing the flame temperature. The portion of anatase phase in $TiO_2$ nanoparticles might be greater than $80\%$ when the flame temperature was lower than 1,000K.

  • MgO enhanced $(Ba_{0.6}Sr_{0.4})$ $TiO_3$ thick films have been fabricated by a tape casting and firing method for tunable devices on the microwave frequency band. In order to improve ferroelectric properties, the composite thick films enhanced with MgO on BST have been asymmetrically annealed by a focused halogen beam method. Dielectric constants of composite thick films are changed from 1050 to 1300 at 100 kHz after 60 s and 150 s annealing by the focused halogen beam. Even though no prominent changes were previously observed from the thick films before and after annealing in terms of chemical composition and surface morphology, it is clear that the average particle size of the thick films calculated by Scherrer's formula were increased by annealing. Furthermore, a strong correlation between particle size and dielectric constant of the composite thick films has been observed; dielectric constant increases with increased particle size. This has been attributed to the increased volume of ferroelectric domain due to increased particle sizes. As a result, the tuning range was improved by halogen beam annealing.

  • The effects of radial heat and $H_2O$ diffusion on the evolution of silica particles in coflow diffusion flames have been studied experimentally. The evolution of silica aggregate particles in coflow diffusion flames has been measured experimentally using light scattering and thermophoretic sampling techniques. The measurements of scattering cross section from $90^{\circ}$ light scattering have been utilized to calculate the aggregate number density and volume fraction using with combination of measuring the particle size and morphology through the localized sampling and a TEM image analysis. Aggregate or particle number densities and volume fractions were calculated using Rayleigh-Debye-Gans and Mie theory for fractal aggregates and spherical particles, respectively. Flame temperatures and volumetric differential scattering cross sections have been measured for different flame conditions such as inert gas species, $H_2$ flow rates, and burner injection configurations to examine the relation between the formation of particles and radial $H_2O$ diffusion. The comparisons of oxidation and flame hydrolysis have also been made for various $H_2$ flow rates using $N_2$ or $O_2$ as a carrier gas. Results indicate that the role of oxidation becomes dominant as both carrier gas($O_2$) and $H_2$ flow rates increases since the radial heat diffusion precedes $H_2O$ diffusion in coflow flames used in this study. The effect of carrier gas flow rates on the evolution of silica particles have also been studied. When using $N_2$ as a carrier gas, the particle volume fraction has a maximum at a certain carrier gas flow rate and as the flow rate is further increased, the hydrolysis reaction Is delayed and the spherical particles finally evolves into fractal aggregates due to decreased flame temperature and residence time.

  • Core-shell polymers of methyl methacrylate-styrene system were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) as an emulsifier using ammonium persulfate(APS) in an initiator and the characteristics of these core-shell polymers were evaluated. Core-shell composite latex has the both properties of core and shell components in a particle, whereas polymer blends or copolymers show a combined physical properties of two homopolymers. This unique behavior of core-shell composite latex can be used in various industrial fields. However, in preparation of core-shell composite latex, several unexpected matters are observed, for examples, particle coagulation, low degree of polymerization, and formation of new particles during shell polymerization. To solve this matters, we study the effects of surfactant concentrations, initiator concentrations, and reaction temperature on the core-shell structure of PMMA-PSt and PSt-PMMA. Particle size and particles distribution were measured by using particle size analyzer, and the morphology of the core-shell composite latex was observed by using transmission electron microscope. Glass temperature was also measured by using differential scanning calorimeter. To identify the core-shell structure, pH of the composite latex solutions was measured.
