  • The attachment of inducer in front of main impeller is a powerful method to improve cavitation performance. Cavitation surge oscillation, however, often occurs at partial flow rate and extremely low suction pressure. As the cavitation surge oscillation with low frequency of about 10 Hz occurs in a close relation between the inlet backflow cavitation and the growth of blade cavity into the throat section of blade passage, one method of installing an axi-asymmetrical plate upstream of inducer has been proposed to suppress the oscillation. The inlet flow distortion due to the axi-asymmetrical plate makes different elongations of cavities on all blades, which prevent the flow from becoming simultaneously unstable at all throat sections. In the present study, changes of the suppression effects with the axial distance between the inducer inlet and the plate and the changes with the blockage ratios of plate area to the cross-sectional area of inducer inlet are investigated for helical inducers with tip blade angles of $8^{\circ}$ and $14^{\circ}$. Then a conceivable application will be proposed to suppress the cavitation surge oscillation by installing axi-asymmetrical inlet plate.

  • In this study, we investigated the operation data of combined heat and power in accordance with the change of the inlet guide vane with partial load. The partial load 80% could close the inlet guide vane up to 24%, and the exhaust gas temperature could be increased by 52℃. The partial load 90% could close the inlet guide vane up to 12%, and the exhaust gas temperature could be increased by 23℃. At 80% of partial load with the thermal load tracking mode, the output could be increased up to 5.68 MW, the combined cycle efficiency increased by 0.73%, and the combined heat and power efficiency increased by 1.81%. At 90% of the partial load, the output could be increased up to 2.55 MW, the combined cycle efficiency increased by 0.32%, and the combined heat and power efficiency increased by 0.72%.

  • The maximum charge accumulation in transformers caused by streaming electrification is commonly observed on the bottom area of transformer winding(i.e.the oil inlet of transformer winding). It is because turbulent flows occur in this portion of transformers. Consequently, if we are to reduce the maximum charge accumulation of transformers, it is important that we should have a good understanding of the conditions of the occurence of partial turbulent flows in the oil inlet of transformer winding. With this point in mind, a simple flow model was designed in this study in order to simulate oil flow in the insulation ducts of power transformers. As a method for mitigating charge accummulation, attention was given to (a) a flow path design for the improvement of flow conditions, and (b) the charge tendency of the material used this design. The results of this study show that the above method is useful for mitigating charge accumulation.

  • Mathematical modeling and numerical calculation on the flow and thermal characteristics induced by fire in a partial enclosure are performed. The solution procedures include the Shvab-Zeldovich approximation for the physical transport equations, low Reynolds number k-.epsilon. model for the turbulent fluid flow and Discrete Ordinate method(DOM) to calculate the radiative heat transfer. PMMA(Polymethylmethacrylate) is adopted as a solid fuel. Two different cases are considered : combustions with and without gas radiation occuring in a open cavity for variable pyrolyzing location of PMMA. When the fire source is located at the left-wall, the flow region of flame gas is limited at the left-wall and ceiling and recirculation region of inlet gas is formulated at neat the floor. In case of neglecting the radiative heat transfer, more large flame size and higher temperature is predicted. It is essential to consider the radiative heat transfer for analysis of fire phenomenon.

  • Recently, the semiconductor and display industries have tried to reduce the emissions of perfluorocompounds (PFCs) from the globally environmental regulation. Total amount of PFC emission can be calculated from the flow rate and the partial pressures of PFCs. For the precise measurement of PFC emission amount, the mass flow controlled helium gas was continuously injected into the equipment of which scrubber efficiency is being measured. The partial pressures of PFCs and helium were accurately measured using a mass spectrometer in each sample extracted from inlet and outlet of the scrubber system. The flow rates are calculated from the partial pressures of helium and also, PFC destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of the scrubber is calculated from the partial pressure of PFC and the flow rate. Under this method, the relative expanded uncertainties of the flow rate and the partial pressures of PFCs are ± 2% (k = 2) in case the concentrations of NF3 and SF6 are as low as 100 μmol/mol.

  • Small-sized axial fans are used as air cooler for electric equipments. But there is a strong demand for higher power of fans according to the increase of quantity of heat from electric devices. Therefore, higher rotational speed design is conducted, although, it causes the deterioration of efficiency and the increase of noise. Then the adoption of contrarotating rotors for the small-sized axial fan is proposed for the improvement of performance. In the present paper, the performance curves of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan with 100mm diameter are shown and the velocity distributions at a partial flow rate at the inlet and the outlet of each front and rear rotor are clarified with experimental results. Furthermore, the flow conditions between front and rear rotors of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan are investigated by numerical analysis results and causes of the performance deterioration of the contra-rotating small-sized axial fan at the partial flow rate is discussed.

  • In this study, the effects of water vapor in inlet air, spark advance and fuel type in the spark ignition engine were investigated through the experiments of combustion and flame arriving pattern analysis using ionization probe. The results of flame propagation experiment using ionization probe show that the flame which ignited from spark plug located at the center of the combustion chamber propagated faster in exhaust side than in intake side due to the mixture flow motion inducted into combustion chamber from intake tumble port at all conditions. And as the partial vapor pressure increased, the flame propagation became slower in all direction. Especially effects were greater for intake side than the exhaust side.

  • For the improvement of the pump characteristics in the partial capacity range, it must be verified that the influence of the impeller design factor on the internal flows and the influence of the impeller internal flows on the pump characteristics. In this paper, in order to understand the influence of outlet angles on flow conditions and characteristics of a mixed flow pump, experiments were carried out for four kinds of impeller, which have the same inlet angle distributions and meridional section shapes. Results shown that separation and stall in the partial capacity range were enlarged by the outlet angles. The relationship between the separation and the stall at the impeller and the discharge flow conditions were clarified.

  • Suppression of abnormal flow phenomena in the Francis hydro turbine is very important to improve the turbine performance. Especially, as cavitation and cavitation surge makes serious problems when the turbine is operated in the range of partial flow rate, optimum method of suppressing the abnormal flow characteristics is required necessarily. Moreover, as swirl flow in the draft tube of the Francis turbine decreases pressure at the inlet of the draft tube, suppression of the swirl flow can be an useful method of suppressing the occurrence of cavitation. In order to clarifying the possibility of suppressing the swirl flow by J-Groove in the draft tube, a series of CFD analysis has been conducted in the range of partial load, designed condition and excessive flow rate of a Francis turbine. A kind of J-Groove is designed and applied to the draft tube of the Francis hydro turbine model. The pressure contours, circumferential velocity vectors and vortex core regions in the draft tube are compared by the conditions with or without J-Groove. In addition, a group of data about the velocity in the draft is presented to show the influence of J-Groove.

  • In this study, for the flow of carbon dioxide/hydrogen mixture through a tubular type Pd-Ag membrane, hydrogen partial pressure, velocity profile, and concentration profile were simulated as a function of inlet flow rate using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The simulation results indicated that the mole fraction of carbon dioxide increased slowly in the longitudinal direction as the flow rate increased. In addition, the effects of inlet flow rate and the length of membrane on hydrogen recovery were investigated. At lower flow rate and for longer membrane, the hydrogen recovery was larger.
