  • This system is monitors the degree of aging happened at the electric machine. It detects electromagnetic wave generated from the insulator when the voltage is applied to the machine. By analyzing the internal and external factors make the electric, mechanic, or thermal characteristics of the electric machinery deteriorate the electric insulation and eventually cause the partial electric discharge. The continuous partial electric charge accelerates the insulation aging and the insulation breakdown happens at last. This system consists of the relays connected with 10 sensors (40 total) detecting the partial electric discharge ans the temperature, the server, ans the program analyzing and storing the data.

  • Abstract - In order to investigate the possibility of separating PD(partial discharge) and noises through the pulse analysis by use of a HFCT, pulse shapes measured by a resistive sensor and a HFCT were analyzed and adequate PA(pulse analysis) algorithms were studied. For the purpose, the HFPD detection and PA system has been developed. Also void discharges and air corona were adopted as the artificial defect and noises, respectively. As a result, it is possible to separate partial discharges and noises through the PA method using the $100kHz{\sim}20MHz$ frequency range HFCT. It is expected to apply the developed system to on-site PD measurements for the electric equipments.

  • This study designed a new type of loop antenna that is able to detect partial discharges based on microstrip line technology. In the diagnosis of power cables, partial discharge signals are generally produced at a frequency range less than 100MHz because high frequency PD signals are lost along a propagation path in such cables. The new type of loop antenna sensor has been studied using simulation software known as CST microwave studio version 5.0. In partial discharge measurement experiments, a commercial HFCT sensor was used as a reference sensor. Several experiments were made over HFCT and loop antenna sensors for detecting partial discharges on 22.9kV MV XLPE cable. In this study, we showed the loop antenna designed in this study that can be applied as a commercial HFCT sensor.

  • This paper describes the application results of an ultrasonic detection system for the power transformer. The ultrasonic detection system with 6 sensors was applied to detect partial discharge in a 154kV transformer with a dangerous levels of $C_{2}H_{2},\;C_{2}H_4$ and $CH_{4}$ gases. The ultrasonic detection tests were carried out 2 times, respectively, to confirm the existence and location of the partial discharge in the transformer. As a result of internal inspection, the arc trace between the pressure ring and core due to the partial discharge was found at the estimated position based on the amplitude and arriving time of the ultrasonic signals. Therefore, it was verified that the ultrasonic detection system is effective as a preventive diagnosis method for the power transformer. Also, the reliability of the ultrasonic detection system in detecting partial discharges in the transformer was also confirmed. It is expected, therefore, that the ultrasonic detection system will have beneficial effects on applications and verifications in detecting partial discharges for the power transformer.

  • In the operation of large capacity hydro generators, it's a very important thing that to minimize several kind of electrical trouble and accident. In order to overcome these problems, the on-line and off-line partial discharge (PD) measuring method has become an important one. Nowadays, epoxy mica coupler(EMC) has been the most widely used sensors for on-line PD detection in rotating machines. This time, we have made a ceramic coupling sensor using $SrTiO_{3}$, because at present, most of sensors has high cost and difficult procedure to making. This paper deals with the electrical characteristics of a ceramic coupling sensor, which has been made to continuously measure PD activity during the operation condition for 13kV class hydro generator. And we have performed the evaluation of sensor life and reliability based on the characteristic testing. The experimental results confirm that the sensor has satisfied at electrical required performance and output characteristic for simulated input signal.

  • This study describes a novel method for detecting and measuring partial discharge (PD) on an electrical facility such as an insulated power cable or switchgear using fiber optic sensing technology, and a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system. This method has distinct advantages over traditional PD sensing techniques based on an electrical method, including immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), long range detection, simultaneous detection for multiple points, and exact location. In this study, we present a DAS system for PD detection with performance evaluation and experimental results in a simulated environment. The results show that the system can be applied to PD detection.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagation in power transformer. A transformer which is similar to 154 kV single phase on-site transformer unit was provided for the purpose of the experiment. The 12 dielectric windows on the transformer enclosure to install UHF (ultra high frequency) sensors and the full scale mock ups of winding and the core were also equipped in the transformer. Every sensors to be installed to the transformer was tested and verified whether they show same characteristics or not before the experiment. A discharge gap which was used as a PD (partial discharge) source moved to several necessary locations in the transformer to simulate dielectric defects. Propagation times of electromagnetic wave signal from PD source to sensors decided by the routes of both reflection phenomenon and diffraction phenomenon were compared each other. The experimental results showed propagation route of the PD signal makes an effect on the frequency spectrum of front part of the signal and the magnitude of the signal and propagation time of the signal when the signal is captured on the sensor.

  • In this paper, the UHF PD(Partial Discharge) sensors for $SF_6$ insulated MV $SF_6$ switchgear have been proposed and related investigations have been performed in order to detect the PD which were produced inside the MV $SF_6$ switchgear. Firstly, the internal type UHF PD sensor based on spiral antenna theory has been developed. This type sensor is highly sensitive and has lowly effect on by on-site noise. Secondly, the external type UHF PD sensor was developed based on log periodic antenna concept. This type sensor is removable and detectable for operating switchgear. These sensors were designed and simulated using RF simulation tool. In order to verify the sensitivity of these sensors, we performed the on-site test using the mock-up switchgears including the artificial defects which were the protrusion on high voltage conductor, free moving metal particle and surface defect on insulator. These mock-up switchgear were installed on the test distribution line.

  • This paper dealt with the propagation characteristics of acoustic signals produced by partial discharges and the positioning of PD origin in insulation oil to develop insulation diagnostic techniques of oil-immerged transformers. Electrode systems such as needle to plane, plane to plane, and particle electrodes were fabricated to simulate some defects of power transformers. In addition, the frequency spectrum and propagation characteristics of acoustic signals with partial discharge (PD) in insulation oil were analyzed. Although there were differences based on the type of defect, the frequency spectra of the acoustic signals measured by wide and narrow band acoustic emission (AE) sensors were distributed in the range of 50 kHz-400 kHz. Therefore, a narrowband AE sensor is suitable for the diagnosis of oil-immersed power transformers. We could find the position of the PD source with an error margin of 10% in the experiments by calculating the position of the PD occurrence using the time difference of arrival measured by five AE sensors.
