  • An innovative method for separating overlapping latent fingerprints, using laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) combined with multivariate analysis, is reported in the current study. LIPS provides the capabilities of real-time analysis and high-speed scanning, as well as data regarding the chemical components of overlapping fingerprints. These spectra provide valuable chemical information for the forensic classification and reconstruction of overlapping latent fingerprints, by applying appropriate multivariate analysis. This study utilizes principal-component analysis (PCA) and partial-least-squares (PLS) techniques for the basis classification of four types of fingerprints from the LIPS spectra. The proposed method is successfully demonstrated through a classification example of four distinct latent fingerprints, using discrimination such as soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) and partial-least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). This demonstration develops an accuracy of more than 85% and is proven to be sufficiently robust. In addition, by laser-scanning analysis at a spatial interval of 125 ㎛, the overlapping fingerprints were separated as two-dimensional forms.

  • A spectrofluorimetric method for the simultaneous determination of amino acids (tryptophan and tyrosine) based on the application of multivariate calibration method such as principal component regression and partial least squares (PLS) to luminescence measurements has been studied. Emission spectra of synthetic mixtures of two amino acids were obtained at excitation wavelength of 257 ㎚. The calibration model in PCR and PLS was obtained from the spectral data in the range of 280-500 ㎚ for each standard of a calibration set of 32 standards, each containing different amounts of two amino acids. The relative standard error of prediction ($RSEP_a$) was obtained to assess the model goodness in quantifying each analyte in a validation set. The overall relative standard error of prediction ($RSEP_m$) for the mixture obtained from the results of a validation set, formed by 6 independent mixtures was also used to validate the present method.

  • Rapid or on-line coal analysis is of great interest in coal industry as it would allow efficient plant operation. Multivariate analysis has been applied to near-infrared(NIR) spectra coal for investigating the relationship between coal properties(%) (moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur), heating value(kcal/kg) and corresponding near-infrared spectral data. The quantitative analysis was carried out by applying PLS(partial least squares regression) to determine a methodology able to establish a relationship between coal properties and NIR spectral data being applied mathematical pre-treatments for minimizing the physical features of the samples. As a results of the analysis, this technique is able to classify the species of coals and to predict the all coal properties except ash, nitrogen and sulfur. The efficient operation of coal fired power plant is expected owing to real time on-line coal analysis of moisture and heating value.

  • Recently, developments of process monitoring system in order to detect and diagnose process abnormalities has got the spotlight in process systems engineering. Normal data obtained from processes provide available information of process characteristics to be used for modeling, monitoring, and control. Since modern chemical and environmental processes have high dimensionality, strong correlation, severe dynamics and nonlinearity, it is not easy to analyze a process through model-based approach. To overcome limitations of model-based approach, lots of system engineers and academic researchers have focused on statistical approach combined with multivariable analysis such as principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares (PLS), and so on. Several multivariate analysis methods have been modified to apply it to a chemical process with specific characteristics such as dynamics, nonlinearity, and so on.This paper discusses about missing value estimation and sensor fault identification based on process variable reconstruction using dynamic PCA and canonical variate analysis.

  • In semiconductor wafer fabrication, etching is one of the most critical processes, by which a material layer is selectively removed. Because of difficulty to correct a mistake caused by over etching, it is critical that etch should be performed correctly. This paper proposes a new approach for etch endpoint detection of small open area wafers. The traditional endpoint detection technique uses a few manually selected wavelengths, which are adequate for large open areas. As the integrated circuit devices continue to shrink in geometry and increase in device density, detecting the endpoint for small open areas presents a serious challenge to process engineers. In this work, a high-resolution optical emission spectroscopy (OES) sensor is used to provide the necessary sensitivity for detecting subtle endpoint signal. Partial Least Squares (PLS) method is used to analyze the OES data which reduces dimension of the data and increases gap between classes. Support Vector Machine (SVM) is employed to detect endpoint using the data after PLS. SVM classifies normal etching state and after endpoint state. Two data sets from OES are used in training PLS and SVM. The other data sets are used to test the performance of the model. The results show that the trained PLS and SVM hybrid algorithm model detects endpoint accurately.

  • Purpose: This study evaluated the feasibility of using a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method as a preprocessing tool for visible/near-infrared spectroscopy (VIS/NIRS) with a spectroscopic transmittance dataset for predicting the internal quality of cherry tomatoes. Methods: VIS/NIRS was used to acquire transmittance spectrum data, to which a DWT was applied to generate new variables in the wavelet domain, which replaced the original spectral signal for subsequent partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis and prediction modeling. The DWT concept and its importance are described with emphasis on the properties that make the DWT a suitable transform for analyzing spectroscopic data. Results: The $R^2$ values and root mean squared errors (RMSEs) of calibration and prediction models for the firmness, sugar content, and titratable acidity of cherry tomatoes obtained by applying the DWT to a PLS regression with a set of spectra showed more enhanced results than those of each model obtained from raw data and mean normalization preprocessing through PLS regression. Conclusions: The developed DWT-incorporated PLS models using the db5 wavelet base and selected approximation coefficients indicate their feasibility as good preprocessing tools by improving the prediction of firmness and titratable acidity for cherry tomatoes with respect to $R^2$ values and RMSEs.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the acceptance about new seed of Chinese cabbage and to analyze the factors affecting continuous use. Research model was derived based on the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM), the analysis was performed using Partial Least Squares(PLS). The factors significantly affecting the use of new seed of Chinese cabbage are innovativeness and seed promotion in antecedent variables and perceived usefulness in parameter variables, which have strong positive relationship among them. Therefore, efforts such as development and diffusion of high quality seed and securing a market for Chinese cabbage of new seed are necessary for improving perceived usefulness. Since these efforts including seed promotion can enhance the farmers' acceptance of new seed and reduce the risk that farmers would face in introducing new seed, these can also be very helpful in enhancing the farmers' innovativeness.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the firmness and the sweetness index (SI) of tomatoes with a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technique within the wavelength range of 1000 - 1550 nm. The hyperspectral images of 95 tomatoes were acquired with a push-broom hyperspectral reflectance imaging system, from which the mean spectra of each tomato were extracted from the regions of interest. The reference firmness and sweetness index of the same sample was measured and calibrated with their corresponding spectral data by partial least squares (PLS) regression with different preprocessing methods. The calibration model developed by PLS regression based on the Savitzky-Golay second-derivative preprocessed spectra resulted in a better performance for both the firmness and the SI of the tomatoes compared to models developed by other preprocessing methods. The correlation coefficients ($R_{pred}$) were 0.82, and 0.74 with a standard error of prediction of 0.86 N, and 0.63, respectively. Then, the feature wavelengths were identified using a model-based variable selection method, i.e., variable importance in projection, from the PLS regression analyses. Finally, chemical images were derived by applying the respective regression coefficients on the spectral image in a pixel-wise manner. The resulting chemical images provided detailed information on the firmness and the SI of the tomatoes. The results show that the proposed HSI technique has potential for rapid and non-destructive evaluation of firmness and the sweetness index of tomatoes.

  • In a rapidly changing corporate environment, the relationship among organizational justice, job attitude, and cynicism as factors influencing exit, voice, loyalty, and neglect that can promote the performance improvement of organizational members was analyzed with the PLS (Partial Least Squares) structural equation in two stage approach. Organizational justice constitutes a formative secondary factor by the first order of distributional justice, procedural justice, and interactional justice, and job attitude is a formative secondary factor of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. We analyze the direct and indirect effects by mediating relationships of cynicism and job attitude on the factors such as exit, voice, loyalty, and neglect. From the perspectives of knowledge management, we analyzed how the perception of organizational justice affects the overall performance of the organization through the improvement of the employees' performance.
