  • This study tries to investigate the influence of parents' neglect on adolescents' school adjustment, and to prove the mediating effects of self-identity and life satisfaction on the relationship between two variables. Data from 5th year(2014) Korean Children and Youth Panel Study(KCYPS) on 2035 nation-wide second year middle school students was analyzed by utilizing Regression analysis and path analysis. Results of the analysis showed first, parents' neglect had a negative effect on adolescents' self-identity, life satisfaction, and school adjustment. Second, adolescents' school adjustment improved with their self-identity and life satisfaction included as mediating effects. Third, the effect of parents' neglect on adolescents' school adjustment was partly mediated by the effects of subject's self-identity and life satisfaction. Furthermore, the need for program development to enhance adolescents' self-identity, life satisfaction and school adjustment was suggested.

  • In this paper, the effects of parental neglect and abuse on school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal in adolescents were examined using a sample of 2,163 second grade middle school students(1,096 boys and 1,067 girls) from the Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) data set. All research variables were measured using self-reported questionnaires. They were analyzed by means of Structural Equation Modeling. The results indicated that parents' abuse had no direct effect, but there was an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by adolescents' social withdrawal. Parental neglect had a direct effect on adolescents' school adjustment and also had an indirect effect on adolescents' school adjustment mediated by social withdrawal. The results indicate that parental neglect is a more significant contributor than adolescents' social withdrawal on adolescents' school adjustment. The results of this study show that parenting attitude, more specifically parental neglect, tend to be more important factors on school adjustment compared to adolescents' psychological problems, such as social withdrawal in adolescence. Taken together, these findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving parental neglect and adolescents' social withdrawal need to be emphasized if adolescents are to better adjust to school life.

  • The purpose of this research is to study differences in perceived parental neglectful behaviors between siblings from a child's perspective. The data were collected using the Multidimensional Neglectful Behavior Scales (MNBS) questionnaire from 158 sibling pairs in grades 4, 5, and 6 who attended the same elementary schools. Younger sibling experienced emotional neglect by their parents significantly more than older siblings. Same gender sibling pairs and older brotheryounger sister pairs perceived their parental neglectful behaviors in a similar manner. However older sister-younger brother pairs showed that the younger brother perceived significantly more neglect than his older sister. This study clearly illustrated that siblings' perceptions of their parents' neglectful behaviors exists differently within a family contrary to previous studies which have shown that siblings' perception of parental neglectful behaviors are similar. The results suggest that the younger brother in mixed-gender sibling pairs are far more likely to experience neglect than any other sibling. Thus, even though siblings can be at equal risk in experiencing parental neglect, the effects can vary depending on the birth order.

  • This study investigated how abuse and neglect experience by parents affect self-respect, relationship with teachers and variance of emotional problem. Also we verified whether self-respect and relationship with teachers mediates relation between abuse and neglect experience and variance of emotional problem. The results of this study are as follows. First, adolescents who experienced abuse and neglect appear to have emotional problems such as depression, social withdrawal, and somatic symptoms. Furthermore, youth who have abuse and neglect experience have difficulties in self-respect and relation with teachers. Second, self-respect and relationship with teachers have significant indirect effect on relation between abuse and neglect experience and variance of emotional problem. Third, although relation between abuse and neglect experience and relationship with teachers represent positive correlation, the regression coefficients in the direct path are significant in the opposite direction, resulting in a suppression effect. Finally, implications for interventions, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of parental neglect on the relationship between family environment, such as economic status and harmony of family and contact with harmful environments. The data came from the 2009 Korean Survey on the Rights of Youth (N = 6,601). The data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling by means of SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 7.0. Bootstrap method used to test significant mediating effects. We found that family environment influences an adolescent's contact with harmful environments through parental neglect, showing that family environment has both indirect and direct effects. The results suggested that a family with low socio-economic status and more stress than harmony engenders a negative effect on the behavior of parents providing care and affection. This neglect influences the adolescent's contact with harmful environments such as harmful media and facilities. It must be acknowledged that parental care and suitable affection play a minimal role in adolescent's contact with harmful environments.

  • Objectives: This study is aimed at exploring the temporal developmental relationship of adolescent depression and parents' child-rearing attitudes, and to examine gender differences in the relationship. The middle school students of the 2011-2013 1st Korea Children and Youth Panel data were used for analysis and the sample consisted of 2.073 individuals. Methods: Research questions were answered through the Latent Growth Model and Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Model. Results: As the results of the Latent Growth Model show, adolescent depression declines as time goes by and there are differences in the depression felt by individuals. An autoregressive cross-lagged model and multiple group analysis were executed by gender. The results show significant gender differences in the relationship between depression and Parents' child-rearing attitudes. Parental neglect has shown differences influencing adolescents depression between males and females. However, in case of parental abuse, no differences between males and females were observed. Conclusion: The results of this study imply that the policy on depression should be carefully considered when preparing for interventions targeting adolescents by gender.
