After the scale development, the estimates of reliability for the 9-variable scales were Cronbach's ${\alpha}=.71{\sim}.90.$ The correlation between the two scales, Psychological Well-Being Index(Franklin, 1996) and Psychological Well-Being(Ryff & Keyes, 1995) was .21~25. The subjects were divided two groups by the score of the Mother's sense of Psychological Well-Being. • Injury has now replaced disease as the biggest single cause of death in children after their first birthday. Each day child dies from preventable, unintentional injury and the medical cost of these injury is increasing remarkably. It is necessary to develope injury prevention models to explain, predict, manage, evaluate and analyze the information about accident. The purpose of this paper is, firstly, to investigate parent's actions regarding safety measures at home and secondly, to identify the influencing factors of parents' safety behaviors. The selection of such factors is guided by the theoretical framework of the Pender's Health Promotion Model. Method ; The questionnaire was developed on the basis of other investigations, through pilot testing, peer review, and review by field health workers. The questionnaire was completed by 231 mothers of young children. Data was collected between April and May 2002. Variable Use of three different domains of safety behavior, safety habits, supervision and perception of safety devices, were listed. Mothers were self reported on internal locus of control, mother & child relationships, and marital intimacy. Also the elements of the Health Promotion Model: perceived benefit, barrier, threat, and self-efficacy, were surveyed. Results & discussion The results indicate that most parents take considerable action to reduce household hazards. The constructs derived from the Model were statistically significant differences for a small part of the variables on parental behavior to reduce hazards in the home, such as age, education, economic status, self-efficacy, perceived benefit, internal locus of control. Future studies ought to include social influences, such as expectations, perceived norms, knowledge, and child-related variables, relevant to parental safety measures in their home.

  • Objective: This study examined the relationships among teachers' empathy ability, children's peer competence and teacher-child relationships. Methods: 180 teachers and 360 children from 3 to 5 years old were included in the study. The research variables were measured by teachers' self-report through questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, and three-step mediated regression analysis. Results: First, teachers' empathy ability and teacher-child relationship showed significant differences according to teacher variables (age, marital status, parental status). And children's peer competence was significantly different according to gender. Second, intimacy which was a subfactor of teacher-child relationships showed a perfect mediating role in the association between teachers' empathy ability and peer competence. Conclusion/Implications: These results suggest the importance of teacher-child's intimate relationships since it affects the child's peer competence significantly. In this study, it was found that, in order to help foster the teacher's empathic ability and teacher-child relationships which have positive effects on the child's desirable peer formation, continuous teacher education and diverse studies are needed.

  • Objective: This study examined the influence of maternal attachment on adjustment in adolescence and investigated whether paternal attachment had any moderating effects on the relationship between maternal attachment and adjustment in adolescence. Methods: The participants of this study were 300 second graders from two middle schools in Seoul. We measured paternal and maternal attachment as perceived by the participants, adjustment in adolescence through school life adjustment, depression, and relational aggression. The study applied correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis suggested by Baron and Kenny (1986). Results: First, participants with high parental attachment showed high levels of school life adjustment, low level of depression, and low levels of relational aggression, demonstrating healthy psycho-social adjustment in adolescence. Second, paternal attachment played a facilitating role in the process of high maternal attachment's positive influence on school life adjustment. Third, paternal attachment mitigated the process of low maternal attachment's negative influence on depression. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of emotional communication, support, and intimacy between parents and children in middle school. Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of the paternal role and involvement in the mother-child relationship.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the ambivalence of adult children to their elderly parents. 410 adult children who married and having alive mother or father were included. First, direct measurement for asking ambivalence was developed and the relationship between direct and indirect measurements of ambivalence was tested. Next, the influences of parental, children, and relational characteristics on ambivalence were examined. Nine items were selected as direct measurement of ambivalence through the exploratory factor analysis and item response theory. The relationship between direct measure and indirect measure was from .543(p<.000) to r=.625(p<.000) based on gender and generation. The effects of indirect ambivalence on conflict was bigger than direct one for both sons and daughters and the influences of direct measurement on intimacy and relational satisfaction were bigger than indirect one. In case of sons, caregiving obligation was the biggest predictor on ambivalence for mothers and value differences was on ambivalence for fathers. For daughters, age of self was the biggest predictor on ambivalence for mothers and age of fathers was the one for fathers. These results were discussed on the meanings of ambivalence for elderly mothers and fathers in Korea comparing with Chinese and Western cultures.
