  • The purpose of the present study was to examine how dimensions of socialization practice and relationship quality may function to manage or increase parent-adolescent conflict. Of particular concern was to examine the comparative efficacy of potential predictors of parent-adolescent conflict across three cultural groups consisting of samples from Mainland China, Russia, and the U.S. as well as across gender-of-parent/gender-of-adolescent dyads from each culture. Findings from a sample of 1,365 adolescents indicated that adolescents' perceptions of parental influences on parent-adolescent conflict differ across cultural groups and gender-of-adolescent. The use of punitive behavior by parents was the strongest and most consistent predictor of parent-adolescent conflict across all cultural groups and gender dyads, suggesting that a general pattern exists for punitiveness to increase parent-adolescent conflict cross-culturally. Perceptions of support, monitoring, conformity to parents, and autonomy from parents influenced parent-adolescent conflict within some of the cultures and selectively for adolescent boys and girls.

  • This study is designed to analyze the child's behaviour development and consider parent's expectation toward it. In the research of the aspect of child's behaviour development, first, this study will analyze the change and development a child shows according to his age, sex, and the community where he is brought up, and then, the relationship between child's behaviour development and parent's expectation toward it. (1) Child's Behaviour Development. a) According to Age. At the age of three ; In such behaviours as wiping nose, dressing, brushing teeth, putting on coat alone, going to toilet for B.M., going on errands, and playing contentedly alone, washing hands, greeting his elders, a child at the age of three to four shows a rapid development, and therefore it seems better to train a child in these behaviors age of three. At the age of four ; In such behaviors sharing cakes with friends, riding on a tricycle, a child shows great development, at the age of four to five, and therefore it seems better to train him in them at the age of four. At the age of five ; In such behaviors as combing hair, putting toys away in proper place, telephoning a child shows great development at the age of five to six, and therefore it seems better to train him in them at the age of five. b) According to sex and community. As a whole, there is little difference between sexes and the communities. It can be estimated from this that sex or the community has on the whole no great influence on the basic aspects of child's behavior development. (2) Parent's expectation. On the whole parent's expectation falls short of a child's development in behaviors ; especially, bathing himself, dressing, going to toilet for B.M, going to toilet to urinate, telephoning, etc. This tendency is consficuous in the case of three or four year old children. This results from parent's protecting in excess their children and reducing the opportunities to encourage the children's independence by delaying the babyhood. (3) The relationship between child's behaviour development and parent's expectation. a) On the whole, the behaviour of a child is at a higher level than parent's expectation. b) As a child grows from three years to six, his behaviour develops on the whole in accordance with the increase of parent's expectation. But the level of the former is lower than that of the latter. c) According to computing a coefficient of correlation is as follows. 3 years old ; .84 4 years old ; .90 5 years old ; .87 6 years old ; .89 It shows there is a high correlation between child's Behaviour and Parent's Expectation.

  • This study examined the mediating roles of parent and peer attachment in the relationship between academic stress and suicidal impulse among Korean adolescents. The 2959 ninth grade students in this study were selected from among 3211 students(excluding missing cases) who participated in the Korean Youth Panel Study. Following Baron & Kenny's(1986) suggestion, the mediator model was employed to analyze parent and peer attachment. Results showed that academic stress had a significant relationship with adolescent's suicidal impulse. Parent attachment acted as a partial mediator between academic stress and suicidal impulse; that is parent attachment provided a protective mechanism minimizing the direct effects of academic stress. However, peer attachment had no significant relationship with academic stress.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate whether there were differences between the Paternal child rearing Involvement and the Parental Satisfaction according to child's sex, father's age and the birth order of child. The subjects surveyed were 271 fathers 132 in their thiries and 139 in their forties who live in Kwang-ju. And the children considered are 128 boys and 143 girls. Among them, first-born children are 143 members, second-born are 103, and third-born are 25. Factor analysis, frequencies, mean, standard deviation, Cronbach's α, one way-ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and step-wise regression are used for data-analysis. The main results were as follows : (1) There were some significant differences in the Paternal child rearing Involvement according to the child's sex, while there was no difference as related the father's age and the birth-order of child. (2) The were some significant differences in the father's Parental Satisfaction which is involved child's sex and the father's age, but there was no difference as to the birth-order of child. (3) There were some significant differences between the Paternal Child rearing Involvement and the Parental Satisfaction, and between its subfactor and the Parental Satisfaction, too. (4) The result of the step-wise regression, which analyses the Paternal child rearing Involvement and the background variables as to father's Parental Satisfaction, shows the Parent-child relationship variable (accounted for about32% of the general variation), spouse support, support of children, general satisfaction, and parent's role conflict at intensity in order. Of the above mentioned five fields, house-activities were the first factor in determining this order. And the personal interaction plays an important role in fulfilling general satisfaction and the support of children. The leisure-action factor was the second explanatory factor in establishing the parent-child relationship. Finally father's age was the fourth explanatory factor in assessing the parent-child relationship variable considering the background variables.

  • Purpose: This study was done to provide a basis for future theory development by analyzing the phenomenon of parent-child relationships based on the 4 areas described by Kim (2000). Methods: A descriptive research design was used to identify research trends in nursing related to the phenomenon of parent-child relationships. Results: Before 1990, the trend in research design was quantitative designs, but since 1990, qualitative research has also been done. Mothers were the most popular research target for these studies followed by mothers and children together. In analyzing the 4 areas outlined by Kim (2000), it was found that most of the research was done on client domain and parents. The research concepts relevant to the essentialistic concept of research target, were 'child rearing', 'breast-feeding' and 'attachment'. For problematic concepts, the concept of 'stress' was continuously dealt with over the period and for the health-care experiential concept, 'adjustment' and 'coping' by parents were the main focus of research. Conclusion: The results show that parent-child relationship research was mainly concentrated on research participants and concepts. In the future, improvements should be made in research development of nursing practice programs and development of theory, to address the complete phenomenon of parent-child relationships.
