  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine mother-child interactions and the quality of life of preschool children with epilepsy as perceived by mothers, and to investigate the relation between mother-child interactions and the quality of life of preschool children with epilepsy. Methods: Participants for this study consist of 92 mothers of children with epilepsy aged three to six years who were treated at university hospitals and a city hospital located in Seoul, Korea. The instruments used for this study were mother-child interactions of preschool children scale and the Korean version of the TAPQOL (TNO-AZL Preschool children Quality of Life). Results: The level of mother-child interactions for preschool children with epilepsy showed a mean score 125.91. The category of dyadic domain was rated the highest while the child domain category was rated the lowest. The level of mother-child interactions for preschool children with epilepsy showed a significant difference according to the mother-child relationship, birth history, seizure frequency, number of antiepileptic drugs and combined disabilities. The quality of life of children with epilepsy showed a significant difference according to the mother-child relationship, birth history, seizure frequency, number of antiepileptic drugs and combined disabilities. There is a statistically significant positive correlation between mother-child interactions and quality of life of preschool children with epilepsy. Conclusion: This study suggests that the mother-child interaction of preschool children with epilepsy showed a tendency to be led by mothers. In order to stimulate mother-child interactions, mothers should help their children enhance their reaction and participation.

  • This study examined the effect of interparental conflict and parent-child conflict on overt aggression in upper elementary school students and investigates if children's father-child conflict or mother-child conflict mediated the effect of interparental conflict on overt aggression. The participants of this study were 532 of fifth to sixth graders from three elementary schools located in Seoul and Gyeong-gi province. Participants were asked to respond to a written questionnaire to measure research variables of the Peer Conflict Scale, the Conflict Tactics Scales, and the Conflict Behavior Questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and hierarchical multiple regression. Mediating effects were examined using analysis procedures of Baron and Kenny. The major findings were as follows: first, the level of interparental conflict and parent-child conflict of both mothers and fathers in upper elementary school students increased the level of overt aggression. Second, parent-child conflict of both mothers and fathers in upper elementary school students partially mediated the relation between interparental conflict and overt aggression. Higher levels of interparental conflict resulted in higher levels of parent-child conflict, and the subsequently higher frequency of overt aggression in upper elementary school students.

  • Although the relation of caregiving burden to well-being has been frequently examined, the effect of caregiving on marital quality has been virtually ignored. The current study explores the impact of parent care on the marriages of adult children by using a nationally representative longitudinal sample. It was hypothesized that parent care would negatively influence the marital quality of adult child caregivers, the effect of parent care would differ between women and men caregivers, and the nature of marital relationship variables would moderate or mediate the impact of care on marital quality. Overall, marital quality does not appear to suffer if caregiving load is light. However, the impact of parental caregiving on some dimensions of marital quality was conditioned by gender, gender role attitudes, and congruence between attitudes and behavior.

  • The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between paternal self-esteem, child-rearing behaviors and child's self-esteem. The secondary purpose was to examine whether there were significant relational differences according to child's sex. 272 dyads consisting of fifth and sixth grade children in elementary school and their measured by the Self-Esteem Inventory (for children), the Self-Esteem Scale (for fathers), and the Iowa Parent Behavior Inventory: Father form. Pearson's r., F-test, and Ducan's multiple range test were used for data analysis. Paternal self-esteem was significantly associated with 'parental involvement', 'reasoning guidance', and 'intimacy'. Paternal self-esteem was positively correlated with girl's self-esteem. Child's self-esteem was positively related to 'parental involvement', 'limit setting', 'responsiveness', 'reasoning guidance' and 'intimacy'. In sex differences, only boy's self-esteem wasn't related to paternal 'limit setting'. Boys' self-esteem was strongly related to 'parental involvement', and girls' self-esteem was strongly related to 'reasoning guidance'.

  • Given the evolving nature of the family unit, a large number of children are being left unsupervised after school. The purpose of this study is to understand the adaptation ability and emotional capacity of these children. To achieve this objective, we investigated the different characteristics of 708 middle-school students in Seoul, dividing them into two categories adult-care children, for whom adults provide care after school, and self-care children for whom no adult supervision was present. In particular, we examined children's adaptation to the school environment and possible self-consciousness difference between self-care and adult-care children, in consideration of their family characteristic; divorced, separated, widowed parent, remarried parents, ordinary families. The results showed that self-care children tend to have a higher rate of shame-proneness and guilt-proneness compared to adult-care children. Furthermore, self-care children exhibited lower school adaptation rate than adult-care children. There was no significant difference in schoolmate relationships between the two groups. In relation to specific family structures, children from reorganized families showed no significant differences in school adaptation and self-conscious, while self-care children from ordinary families revealed low school adaptation and high self-conscious characteristics. The results of this study are critical in the effective analysis and understanding of children's adaptive and emotional behaviors arising from changes in their family structure.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to compare the quality of life (QoL) of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) before and during coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and to examine how their QoL is affected by emotional and environmental factors during COVID-19. Methods: Participants in the pre-COVID-19 (n=43) and COVID-19 (n=36) groups were recruited from the same university hospital. The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) 4.0 Child Self-report, the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), the PedsQL 4.0 Parent Proxy Report, and the Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) were employed. Independent t-tests, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Results: Caregivers assessed the children's QoL more negatively than the children themselves in both groups. Children with ADHD evaluated their physical function more negatively and anxiety was significantly higher in the COVID-19 group. In the COVID-19 group, the PedsQL child self-report was significantly predicted by the CPRS, the CDI, and environmental factors (i.e., relation to child and monthly household income). Conclusion: Children with ADHD in the COVID-19 group had a numerically lower QoL and significantly higher anxiety. To improve QoL, it is important to deal with not only depression but also ADHD symptoms and environmental factors.

  • This study examined the relation between aggression and intelligence in young children. The WPPSI-R was administered to 165 children 3 to 7 years of age. The teacher and the parent separately rated each child's level of aggressive behavior on the same 10 item questionnaire. There was no relationship between aggression and intelligence. However, the aggression scores correlated with age and sex. Thus, intellectual ability is not directly related to aggressive behavior in young children. The implication of these results and the shortcomings of this research were discussed.

  • The purpose of this research was conducted to formative processes and to interpret premarital adult's sexuality meaning. The interviews have been executed based upon ethnography approach and method of interview in depth within the framework of the Weis's sexual script theory (1998) and parent-children relation. The interview in depth has been conducted with unmarried 7 males and 8 females inclusive of college students, total 15 persons who were born 1974-1980 and living in Seoul and nearby suburban areas. A period of interviews were carried out from September until December 2003. Each interview was executed for 2 to 4 hours apiece, and each person had 2 to 4 interviews during the period. The result of analysis of the sexuality scripts theory from three different views indicates that the female informants appeared to rationalize the fact that traditional concept of the chastity as defined by the socio-cultural level has been changed. It also indicated that there were very few sex educations in the society at large except for the public medias including the Internet. The interrelation level indicates that positive interaction with the opposite sex has affected them in the course of their building up desirable personal relationship in the society and uplifting their sense of self-esteem. The internal level of sexuality, it is much dependent on the extent of individual inner recognition of sexuality. The parent-children relation view of sexuality, the most influential factor for their communication on sexuality lies in the extent of their realization on how positively their parents recognize their children.
