  • Kadainou R-1, an interspecific hybrid grape derived from red (Vitis ficifolia var. ganebu) and white (V. vinifera cv. Muscat of Alexandria) grapes, accumulates high concentrations of anthocyanin in the berry skin. Hence, the expression of uridine 50 -diphosphate (UDP)-glucose:flavonoid 3-O-glucosyltransferase (UFGT), the key enzyme of the anthocyanin pathway, was examined in the berry skin of Kadainou R-1. As information on gene sequences of V. ficifolia var. ganebu and other wild grape species was unavailable, we performed GeneChip hybridization using biotin-labeled genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) to investigate how the genomic sequences of V. vinifera varieties and that of V. ficifolia var. ganebu differ. The study showed a lower correlation coefficient between V. vinifera cultivars and V. ficifolia var. ganebu than that among V. vinifera cultivars. The sequences of the UFGT gene derived from both parents of the red and white cultivars were sequenced in Kadainou R1 and revealed that both were expressed irrespective of the fact that it was not expressed in the white grape (male parent).

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on eating disorders in college students. Method: A descriptive correlational study design was used. Eight hundred fifty-nine college students were administered self-report questionnaires to examine eating habits, self-efficacy, depression, and parent-adolescent communication from May to June, 2010. Collected data were analyzed by the SPSS 15.0 program for t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The level of an eating disorder in participants was moderate and it differed by gender, major, and type of living. The eating disorder showed a significant correlation with self-efficacy (r=-.28, p=<.000), depression (r=.23, p=.001), and parents-adolescent communication (r=-.13, p=.008). Self-efficacy (8.2%) and depression (2.1%) were significant predictors to explain the eating disorder. Conclusion: This study provides comprehensive understanding of the influencing factors on eating disorders in college students. It suggests that nursing interventions to improve self-efficacy and decrease depression for management of eating disorder are needed.

  • Ceftezole pivaloyloxymethyl ester(CFZ-PV) was synthesized to improve oral absorption and bioavailability of parent drug by esterification of ceftezole(CFZ) with chloromethyl pivalate. The successful synthesis of CFZ-PV was conformed by spectroscopic analysis. Partition coefficient studies showed that CFZ-PV is more lipophillic than CFZ. The pharmacokinetic characteristics of CFZ-PV and CFZ were compared following oral administrations of these compounds to rabbits. The amount of CFZ in plasma was determined with an HPLC method. The ester compound (prodrug) was not detected in plasma following oral administration of CFZ-PV, and although CFZ-PV had not microbiological activity in vitro, the plasma taken after oral administration of CFZ-PV had microbiological activity. From above observations, it was noted that CFZ-PV is rapidly hydrolyzed to CFZ in the body. And the oral absorption of CFZ-PV was increased by yielding 2-fold bioavailability rather than CFZ. Therefore, CFZ-PV could be a novel prodrug of CFZ which can improve the oral bioavailability of CFZ.

  • Phthalimidyl ester of ceftezole (CFZ-PT) was synthesized as a prodrug by esterification of ceftezole (CFZ) with N-bromophthalimide. CFZ-PT was more lipophilic than CFZ when the lipophilicity was assessed by partition coefficients between n-octanol and water at various pH. The pharmacokinetic characteristic of CFZ-PT and CFZ preparations were compared following oral administrations of these compounds to rabbits. CFZ-PT is expected to be metabolized rapidly to CFZ in the body. The metabolism process appears to be hydrolysis of the ester to CFZ, the parent drug of CFZ-PT. In vivo metabolism of CFZ-PT to CFZ was confirmed in rabbit by HPLC analysis. CFZ concentration in the serum samples taken after oral administration of CFZ-PT(equivalent amount of CFZ) were released and higher than those of CFZ. Oral bioavailability of CFZ-PT was 1.9 fold higher than at of CFZ in rabbits because of enhanced lipophilicity and absorption. Finally, it was concluded that CFZ-PT appears useful as a prodrug of CFZ to improve the oral bioavailability of CFZ.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the degree of self-image and social support among Korean-Chinese adolescents and investigate the relationship between these variables. Method: A total of 621 Korean-Chinese adolescents in five middle schools in YanBian, China were recruited from March 1st to the 9th, 2005. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, and ANOVA with the SPSS 11.5 program. Result: In Korean-Chinese adolescents, the total self-image score was statistically different for age, parents' education status, parents' job and living with parents. In the 12 subscales, scoresof emotional tone, impulse control, sexuality, social functioning, vocational attitudes and self-reliance had significant differences between groups regarding gender. The total self-image was in the average range. However, areas of mental health and family function were lower than average and the scale of idealism washigher than average. The adolescents perceived parent's support was higher then friend's support. There was a positive correlation between self-image and social support. Conclusion: The findings suggest there is a need to examine self-image and social support of Korean- Chinese adolescents according to their parents' marital status and a need to develop a program to help these broken family's adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the Family System Diagnosis Scale and to examine its reliability and validity. The subscales of the questionnaire included scores on seven constructs. In order to define constructs accurately, a careful review of Minuchin's writings, the writings of other family therapists, and relevant articles on family interaction was undertaken. A pool of 150 items was given to eight family counselors along with a description of Minuchin' s concepts. The counselors were asked to choose the category each statement fit and to rate the degree of fit using the 3-point scale. Using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and Linear Structural Relationship(LISREL), six subdimensions of individuation and 55 items of FSDS were identified; enmeshmen disengagement(16 items), parent coalition generational coalition(6 items), flexibility rigidity(5 items), spouse conflict resolved unresolved(8 items), mother-child cohesion estrangement(10 items), father-child cohesion estrangement(10 items). 356 adolescents(ages 13∼18), 356 fathers, 356 mothers in Seoul, Busan, Dague, Incheun, Dajeun, Ulsan, and Kwangju were completed the Family System Diagnosis Scale(FSDS). The reliability of the scale was calculated by Cronbach's a Coefficient and the total a = .94 and the calculation for each factor was .87, .60, .77, .80 and .79 respectively.

  • Ethoxycarbonyloxyethyl ester of ceftezole (CFZ-ET) was synthesized as a prodrug by esterification of ceftezole (CFZ) with ethoxycarbonyloxyethyl chloride and was confirmed by spectroscopic analyses. CFZ-ET was more lipophillic than CFZ as assessed by n-octanol and water partition coefficients at various pH. CFZ-ET itself did not show any microbiological activity in vitro, but showed substaintial microbiological activity after oral administration of CFZ-ET, indicating that CFZ-ET is converted to microbiologically active metabolite, probably CFZ, in the body. When CFZ-ET was incubated in blood, liver and intestine homogenates of rabbits, liver homogenate showed the fastest conversion of CFZ-ET. CFZ-ET appears rapidly metabolized in the liver when given orally due to the hydrolysis of the ester to CFZ, the parent drug of CFZ-ET. In vivo metabolism of CFZ-ET to CFZ was confirmed in rabbit by HPLC analysis. CFZ-ET were higher than those in the serum samples taken after oral administration of equivalent amount of CFZ. Oral bioavailability of CFZ-ET was 1.5-fold higher than that of CFZ in rabbits because of enhanced lipophilicity and absorption. Based on these findings, CFZ-ET appears useful as a prodrug of CFZ to improve the oral bioavailability of CFZ.
