  • The capacitive sensor has a simple structure, compact size and low cost, but a small dynamic range. The small range is caused by use of gap variation. If the sensor takes area variation type with one plate moving horizontally, it can have a large measurable range. While the area variation has relatively low sensitivity, some studies have found methods to improve the sensitivity. Even though the methods are effective, parameters of the results are limited and 2 dimensional. This study provides more practical and 3 dimensional analysis and suggests relations between parameters. Using the results, the optimized design parameters of a high dynamic range capacitive sensor can be found.

  • A major problem in Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) is torque ripple, which causes undesirable acoustic noise and vibration. This work focuses on reducing the undesirable torque ripple in SRM by modifying stator and rotor geometry. This paper presents a comparative study on torque ripple minimization in SRM with modified pole shapes such as stator pole taper, stator pole face with non-uniform air gap and pole shoe attached to rotor pole. Further this paper presents a detailed sensitivity analysis of the effect of different geometrical parameters that alter the pole face shapes on the performance of SRM. The analysis is performed using finite-element method considering average torque and torque ripple as performance parameters. Based on the analysis, a design combining stator pole taper with non-uniform air gap is proposed to improve the torque characteristics of SRM. The dynamic characteristics of the proposed design are simulated and the results show satisfactory reduction in torque ripple.

  • The objectives of the present paper were to investigate the concentration of total coliform in wastewater effluents and the effect of water chemical and physical characters in it. The most correlated parameter with total coliform was COD. It means that the wastewater treatment efficient effects on total coliform concentration. And we developed predictive model for the total coliform concentration. The estimated parameters for model were COD, temperature, nitrite, chloride, Mn and regression model equation was determined; log (Total Coli.) = 1.861+0.065[COD]+0.038[temperature]-0.0004[$Cl^-$]+3.697[Mn]-0.32 [$NO_2-N$] The developed model provided very strong correlation ($R^2:0.82$) between total coliform and regression equation. The parameters having high sensitivity were COD and temperature. So the study indicated that if the temperature and COD of wastewater effluent were known, we would estimate the concentration of total coliform and decide the most effective usage of chlorine.

  • This paper presents a new vector control scheme for induction motor. An exact knowledge of the rotor flux position is essential for a high-performance vector control. The position of the rotor flux is measured in the direct schemes and estimated in the indirect schemes. Since the estimation of the flux position requires a priori knowledge of the induction motor parameters, the indirect schemes are machine parameter dependent. The rotor and stator resistance among the parameters change with temperature. Variations in the parameters of induction machine cause deterioration of both the steady state and dynamic operation of the induction motor drive. Several methods have presented to minimize the consequences of parameter sensitivity in indirect scheme. In this paper, new estimation scheme of rotor flux position is presented to eliminate sensitivity due to variation in the resistance. The simulation is executed to verify the proposed vector control performance and to compare its performance with that of indirect and direct vector control.

  • In this study, the dynamic instabilities of a nonlinear elastic system subjected to follower force are investigated. The two-degree-of-freedom double pendulum model with nonlinear geometry, cubic spring, and linear viscous damping is used for the study. The constant and periodic follower forces are considered. The chaotic nature of the system is identified using the standard methods, such as time histories, phase portraits, and Poincare maps, etc.. The responses are chaotic and unpredictable due to the sensitivity to initial conditions. The sensitivities to parameters, such as geometric initial imperfections, magnitude of follower force, and viscous damping, etc. is analysed. The strange attractors in Poincare map have the self-similar fractal geometry. Dynamic buckling loads are computed for various parameters, where the loads are changed drastically for the small change of parameters.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate stability of a high speed train and to propose optimal design using sensitivity analysis of suspension design parameters. A form of equations of motion in tangent track and curve track is obtained based on each creep force. Tangent track and curve track equations include lateral, rolling and yawing motions of wheel sets, bogies, and carbodies. Three track cases have been chosen to stability assesment of a high speed train analysis. Sensitivity equations are set up by directly differentiating the equations of motion. This study def'.led Stability performance index of a high speed train in tangent track and curve track. The relative magnitude of the effect of suspension parameters on the critical speed is computed, and by adjusting these parameters, the increase of the critical speed is achieved.

  • By normalizing the internal hysteresis variable and eliminating the redundant parameter, the normalized Bouc-Wen model is considered to be an improved and more reasonable form of the Bouc-Wen model. In order to facilitate application and further research of the normalized Bouc-Wen model, some key aspects of the model need to be uncovered. In this paper, hysteresis characterization of the normalized Bouc-Wen model is first studied with respect to the model parameters, which reveals the influence of each model parameter to the shape of the hysteresis loops. The parameter identification scheme is then proposed based on an improved genetic algorithm (IGA), and verified by experimental test data. It is proved that the proposed method can be an efficacious tool for identification of the model parameters by matching the reconstructed hysteresis loops with the target hysteresis loops. Meanwhile, the IGA is shown to outperform the standard GA. Finally, a simplified identification method is proposed based on parameter sensitivity, which indicates that the efficiency of the identification process can be greatly enhanced while maintaining comparable accuracy if the low-sensitivity parameters are reasonably restricted to narrower ranges.

  • Face stability analyses provides the most probable failure mechanisms and the understanding about parameters that need to be considered for the evaluation of ground movements caused by tunneling. After the Upper Bound Method (UBM) solution which can consider the influence of seepage forces and depth-dependent effective cohesion is verified with the numerical experiments, the probabilistic model is proposed to calculate the unbiased limiting tunnel collapse pressure. A reliability analysis of a shallow circular tunnel driven by a pressurized shield in a frictional and cohesive soil is presented to consider the inherent uncertainty in the input parameters and the proposed model. The probability of failure that exceeding a specified applied pressure at the tunnel face is estimated. Sensitivity and importance measures are computed to identify the key parameters and random variables in the model.

  • The automatic $CO_2$ welding is a manufacturing process to produce high quality joints for metal and it could provide a capability of full automation to enhance productivity. Despite the widespread use in the various manufacturing industries, the full automation of the robotic $CO_2$ welding has not yet been achieved partly because the mathematical model for the process parameters of a given welding task is not fully understood and quantified. Several mathematical models to control welding quality, productivity, microstructure and weld properties in arc welding processes have been studied. However, it is not an easy task to apply them to the various practical situations because the relationship between the process parameters and the bead geometry is non-linear and also they are usually dependent on the specific experimental results. Practically, it is difficult, but important to know how to establish a mathematical model that can predict the result of the actual welding process and how to select the optimum welding condition under a certain constraint. In this research, an attempt has been made to develop an intelligent algorithm to predict the weld geometry (top-bead width, top-bead height, back-bead width and back-bead height) as a function of key process parameters in the robotic $CO_2$welding. A sensitivity analysis has been conducted and compared the relative impact of three process parameters on bead geometry in order to verify the measurement errors on the values of the uncertainty in estimated parameters.

  • Calculation of the core neutronic parameters is one of the key components in all nuclear reactors. In this research, the energy spectrum and spatial distribution of the neutron flux in a uranium target have been calculated. In addition, sensitivity of the core neutronic parameters in accelerator-driven subcritical advanced liquid metal reactors, such as electron beam energy ($E_e$) and source multiplication coefficient ($k_s$), has been investigated. A Monte Carlo code (MCNPX_2.6) has been used to calculate neutronic parameters such as effective multiplication coefficient ($k_{eff}$), net neutron multiplication (M), neutron yield ($Y_{n/e}$), energy constant gain ($G_0$), energy gain (G), importance of neutron source (${\varphi}^*$), axial and radial distributions of neutron flux, and power peaking factor ($P_{max}/P_{ave}$) in two axial and radial directions of the reactor core for four fuel loading patterns. According to the results, safety margin and accelerator current ($I_e$) have been decreased in the highest case of $k_s$, but G and ${\varphi}^*$ have increased by 88.9% and 21.6%, respectively. In addition, for LP1 loading pattern, with increasing $E_e$ from 100 MeV up to 1 GeV, $Y_{n/e}$ and G improved by 91.09% and 10.21%, and $I_e$ and $P_{acc}$ decreased by 91.05% and 10.57%, respectively. The results indicate that placement of the Np-Pu assemblies on the periphery allows for a consistent $k_{eff}$ because the Np-Pu assemblies experience less burn-up.
