  • Many engineering problems often require the large amount of computing resources for iterative simulations of problems treating many parameters and input files. In order to overcome the situation, this paper proposes an e-Science based computational system. The system exploits the Grid computing technology to establish an integrated web service environment which supports distributed high throughput computational simulations and remote executions. The proposed system provides an easy-to-use parametric study service where a computational service includes real time monitoring. To verify usability of the proposed system, two kinds of applications were introduced. The first application is an Aerospace Integrated Research System (e-AIRS). The e-AIRS adapts the proposed computational system to solve CFD problems. The second one is design and optimization of protein 3-dimensional structures in structural biology.

  • One of the consistent nuisances in accurate design of circuits containing coils with core is how to take into account the frequency dependence of Q of actual coils. The conventional equivalent circuit consisting of an inductance and a series (constant) resistance and possibly a parallel (constant) capacitance is of little use in this situation since the core loss itself is strongly dependent on the frequency. In order to circumvent this difficulty, in this paper, a mathematical expression for Q of a given core as a function of inductance and frequency is first assumed and parameters in this expression are optimiged so as to best fit the data provided by the core manufacturer or obtained experimentally. This expression is then utilized in accurate calculation of the frequency response of a given circuit required in the optimal design of circuits containing coils. In other words the proposed approach is an effective combination of an approximate expression of coil's Q and circuit optimisation technique, which seems to have solved, to a great extent, the stated difficulty associated with actual coils. As for the optimization technique, ths Fletcher-Powell procedure was employed and one example was given to illustrate the proposed approach.

  • H.264 is a new international video coding standard that can achieve considerably higher coding efficiency than conventional standards. Its coding gain has been achieved by employing advanced video coding methods. Specially, the increased number of macroblock modes and the complex mode decision procedure using the Lagrangian optimization are the main factors for increasing coding efficiency. Although H.264 obtains improved coding efficiency, it is difficult to do an real-time encoding because it considers all coding parameters in the mode decision procedure. In this paper, we propose a fast mode decision algorithm which classifies the macroblock modes in order to determine the optimal mode having low complexity quickly. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the encoding time by 34.95% on average without significant PSNR degradation or bit-rate increment. In addition, in order to show the validity of simulation results, we set up a low boundary condition for coding efficiency and complexity and show that the proposed algorithm satisfies the low boundary condition.

  • In this paper, the compact model for FinFET gate resistance is developed. Based on the FinFET geometry and material, the value of the gate resistance is extracted by Y-parameter analysis using 3D device simulator, Sentaurus. By dividing the gate resistance into horizontal and vertical components, the proposed gate resistance model captures the non-linear characteristics. The proposed compact model reflects the realistic gate structure which has two different materials (Tungsten, TiN) stacked. Using the proposed model, the number of fins for the minimum gate resistance can be proposed based on the variation of gate geometrical parameters. The proposed gate resistance model is implemented in BSIM-CMG. A ring-oscillator is designed, and its delay performance is compared with and without gate resistance.

  • Far-infrared radiation ceramic is an attractive material that provides thermal therapy by permeating the infrared rays into the deep inside of the human skin. Therefore, it is currently used for thermal therapy devices, thermal mat, heating equipment and so on. This work aims to optimize the sintering process of the far-infrared radiation ceramic with the process parameters of temperature and time. A variety of characterization tools have been used to investigate the optimal sintering condition of far-infrared radiation. The phase of far-infrared radiation ceramic was characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and microstructure of fracture surface was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The FT-IR was also performed to measure the far-infrared emissivity.

  • We design and analyze the n-channel junctionless fin-shaped field-effect transistor (JL FinFET) with 10-nm gate length and compare its performances with those of the conventional bulk-type fin-shaped FET (conventional bulk FinFET). A three-dimensional (3-D) device simulations were performed to optimize the device design parameters including the width ($W_{fin}$) and height ($H_{fin}$) of the fin as well as the channel doping concentration ($N_{ch}$). Based on the design optimization, the two devices were compared in terms of direct-current (DC) and radio-frequency (RF) characteristics. The results reveal that the JL FinFET has better subthreshold swing, and more effectively suppresses short-channel effects (SCEs) than the conventional bulk FinFET.

  • In this study, washing parameters such as washing time, agitation velocity, and cycles were optimized for high surface area of the activated carbon (AC) by KOH activation. Even though AC with high surface area showed at higher washing efficiency, over 90% on washing efficiency was regulated by the intra-particle diffusion due to high tortuosity of the pore structures on AC. In addition, we can obtain $K_2CO_3$ through the evaporation from the wastewater and use it for chemical activation of AC. The AC with $K_2CO_3$ activation has specific surface area values of $2,219m^2/g$ equally that of KOH activation. Considering that $K_2CO_3$ is an effective alternative as a KOH, our results demonstrated that the process by recycling wastewater on AC production could be applicable for near-zero wastes.

  • In this work, the merged PiN Schottky(MPS) diodes based silicon carbide(SiC) have been optimized and designed for 1200V diodes by 2D-atlas simulation tool. We investigated the optimized characteristics of SiC MPS diodes such as breakdown voltage and specific on-resistance by varying the doping concentrations of P-Grid/epi-layer and space of P-Grid, which are the most important parameters. The breakdown voltage and specific on-resistance, based on Baliga's Figure Of Merit (BFOM), have been compared with and the SiC-based MPS diodes show improved BFOMs with low values of specific on-resistance and high breakdown voltage. It has been demonstrated 1,200 V SiC MPS diodes will find useful applications in high voltage energy-efficient devices.

  • Selective laser melting (SLM) technique is one of the additive manufacturing processes, in which functional, complex parts can be directly manufactured by selective melting layers of powder. SLM technique has received great attention due to offering a facile part-manufacturing route and utilizing a hard-to-manufacturing material (e.g. Ti6Al4V). The SLM process allows the accurate fabrication of near-net shaped parts and the significant reduction in the consumption of raw materials when compared to the traditional manufacturing processes such as casting and/or forging. In this study, we focus the high-speed additive manufacturing of Ti6Al4V parts in the aspect of manufacturing time, controlling various process parameters.

  • Pollution purification using titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) photocatalyst has attracted a great deal of attention with increasing number of relent environmental problems. Currently, the application of TiO$_2$ photocatalyst has been focused on purification and treatment of waste water. However. the use of conventional TiO$_2$ powder photocatalyst results in disadvantage of stirring during the reaction and of separation after the reaction. And the usage of artificial UV lamp has made the cost of photocatalyst treatment system high. Consequently, we herein studied the pilot-scale design to aid in optimization of the energy-saving process for more through development and reactor design by solar light/UV lamp/ TiO$_2$system. In this study, we manufactured the TiO$_2$sol by sol-gel method. According to analysis by XRD, SEM and TEM, characterization of TiO$_2$ sol were nano-size (5-6 nm) and anatase type. Inorganic binder (SiO$_2$) was added to TiO$_2$ lot to be coated for support strongly, and support of ceramic bead was used to lower separation rate that of glass bead The influences were studied of various experimental parameters such as TiO$_2$ quantity, pH, flow rate. additives, pollutants concentration, climate condition and reflection plate by means of reaction time of the main chararteristics of the obtained materials. In water treatment system, variable realtor as solar light/ or UV lamp according to climate condition such as sunny and cloudy days treated the phenol and E-coli(Escherichia coli) effectively.
