  • This study focuses on the application of multi-criteria performance measures based on the concept of equifinality to the calibration of the rainfall-runoff model TOPMODEL in a small deciduous forest catchment. The performance of each parameter set was evaluated by six performance measures, individually, and each set was identified as a behavioral or non-behavioral parameter set by a given behavioral acceptance threshold. Many behavioral parameter sets were scattered throughout the parameter space, and the range of model behavior and the sensitivity for each parameter varied considerably between the different performance measures. Sensitivity was very high in some parameters, and varied depending on the kind of performance measure as well. Compatibilities of behavioral parameter sets between different performance measures also varied, and very few parameter sets were selected to be used in making god predictions for all performance measures. Since different behavioral parameter sets with different likelihood weights were obtained for each performance measure, the decision on which performance measure to be used may be very important to achieve the goal of study. Therefore, one or more suitable performance measures should be selected depending on the environment and the goal of a study, and this may lead to decrease model uncertainty.

Technique for computing the sensitivity of temperature distributions to changes in processing parameters needed for deciding the more effective laser input parameters for laser surface hardening treatment are considered. In this study, a state equation governing the heat flow in laser surface treatment is analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element method and sensitivity data of the processing parameter obtained using a direct differentiation method applied for sensitivity analysis. The interesting processing parameter is taken as the laser scan velocity and characteristic beam radius( $r_{b}$) of the sensitivity of the temperature T versus v and $r_{b}$ is analyzed. • Purpose: CLIMEX, a species distribution modeling tool, includes various types of parameters representing climatic conditions; the estimation of these parameters directly determines the model accuracy. In this study, we investigated the sensitivity of parameters for the climatic suitability calculated by CLIMEX for Metcalfa pruinosa in South Korea. Methods: We first changed 12 parameters and identified the three significant parameters that considerably affected the CLIMEX simulation response. Results: The result indicated that the simulation was highly sensitive to changes in lower optimal temperatures, lower soil moisture thresholds, and cold stress accumulation rate based on the sensitivity index, suggesting that these were the fundamental parameters to be used for fitting the simulation into the actual distribution. Conclusion: Sensitivity analysis is effective for estimating parameter values, and selecting the most important parameters for improving model accuracy.

  • Previous our numerical results in computing point kinetics equations show a possibility in developing approximations to estimate sensitivity responses of nuclear reactor We recalculate sensitivity responses by maintaining the corrections with first order of sensitivity parameter. We present a method for computing sensitivity responses of nuclear reactor based on an approximation derived from point kinetics equations. Exploiting this approximation, we found that the first order approximation works to estimate variations in the time to reach peak power because of their linear dependence on a sensitivity parameter, and that there are errors in estimating the peak power in the first order approximation for larger sensitivity parameters. To confirm legitimacy of our approximation, these approximate results are compared with exact results obtained from our previous numerical study.

  • Matched Field Processing (MFP) is a successive process of correcting mismatches between true and assumed parameters by matching the measured acoustic field data with numerically simulated data which we call replica. The MFP is widely used both in geo-acoustic parameter inversions and in source localizations. Whether a certain parameter can be inverted effectively or whether a source can be localized correctly depends on the amount of the influence that a parameter has on the acoustic field during the matching process. Sensitive parameters can be better estimated than the less sensitive ones in MFP. On the contrary, the sensitive parameters affect adversely on the source localization results when they have uncertainties. In this paper, a sensitivity index is defined based upon the field variation resulting from the perturbed parameters. Numerical test results show that the index behaves in accordance with the results of source localization under a mismatched environment and also with the inversion solutions.

  • This paper presents a molten salt reactor (MSR) design parameter sensitivity study using a nodal dynamic modelling methodology with explicitly modified point kinetics equation and Mann's model for heat transfer. Six parameters that can impact MSR safety are evaluated. A MATLAB-Simulink model inspired by Thorcon's 550MWth MSR is used for parameter evaluations. A safety envelope was formed to encapsulate power, maximum and minimum temperature, and temperature-induced reactivity feedback. The parameters are perturbed by ±30%. The parameters were then ranked by their subsequent impact on the considered safety envelope, which ranks acceptable parameter uncertainty. The model is openly available on GitHub.
