Development of Web Service-based Parallel and Distributed Simulation (웹서비스 기반의 분산 시뮬레이션 프로토타입 개발)

  • Parallel and distributed simulation is concerned with the efficient execution of large-scale discrete event simulation models on multiprocessors and distributed platforms. After the development of WWW, many efforts in the parallel and distributed simulation have been made for modeling, particularly building simulation languages and creating model libraries that can be assembled and executed over WWW. However, web-based parallel and distributed simulation is restricted by heterogeneous computing environments. Recently, the advent of XML and web services technology has made these efforts enter upon a new phase. Especially, the web services as a distributed information technology have demonstrated powerful capabilities for scalable interoperation of heterogeneous systems. This paper aims to develop and evaluate the parallel and distributed simulation using the web services technology. In particular, a prototype multi-pass simulation framework is implemented using Java-based web services technology. It focuses on the efficiency of multi-pass simulation used for optimization through the distribution of simulation replication to several simulation service providers. The development of parallel and distributed simulation using web services will help solve efficiently large-scale problems and also guarantee interoperability among heterogeneous networked systems.

  • This paper proposes a distributed simulator for general control system in CEMTool. Systems can be described by SIMTool likes the simulink in Matlab. For distributed simulation, we can seperate any system into several parallel subsystems in SIMTool. The number of parallel subsystem can be determined by the system's property. After seperation, parallel simulator will do initialization, one-step-ahead simulation, block-distribution and ordering and so on. Finally, simulator will create independent C codes and executive files for each subsystem. The whole system is fulfilled by several PCs, and each PC executes one subsystem. There are communications among these subsystem using reflective memory or ethernet. We have made several experiments, and the 5-stand cold rolling mill control system is our main target. The result of parallel simulation has shown effective speedup in comparison with one pc simulation.

  • The DEVS(discrete event system specification) formalism describes a discrete event system in a hierarchical, modular form. DEVSIM++ is C++ based general purpose DEVS abstract simulator which can simulate systems to be modeled by the DEVS formalism in a sequential environment. We implement P-DEVSIM++ which is a parallel version of DEVSIM++. In P-DEVSIM++, the external and internal event of models can be processed in parallel. To process in parallel, we introduce a hierarchical distributed simulation technique and some optimistic distributed simulation techniques. But in our algorithm, the rollback of a model is localized itself in contrast to the Time Warp approach. To evaluate its performance, we simulate a single bus multiprocessor architecture system with an external common memory. Simulation result shows that significant speedup is made possible with our algorithm in a parallel environment.

Adaptive and optimized agent placement scheme for parallel agent-based simulation

  • This study presents a noble scheme for distributed and parallel simulations with optimized agent placement for simulation instances. The traditional parallel simulation has some limitations in that it does not provide sufficient performance even though using multiple resources. The main reason for this discrepancy is that supporting parallelism inevitably requires additional costs in addition to the base simulation cost. We present a comprehensive study of parallel simulation architectures, execution flows, and characteristics. Then, we identify critical challenges for optimizing large simulations for parallel instances. Based on our cost-benefit analysis, we propose a novel approach to overcome the performance constraints of agent-based parallel simulations. We also propose a solution for eliminating the synchronizing cost among local instances. Our method ensures balanced performance through optimal deployment of agents to local instances and an adaptive agent placement scheme according to the simulation load. Additionally, our empirical evaluation reveals that the proposed model achieves better performance than conventional methods under several conditions.

  • Zeigler's DEVS(Discrete Event Systems Specification) formalism supports formal specification of discrete event systems in a hierarchical , modular manner. Associated are hierarchical, distributed simulation algorithms, called abstract simulators, which interpret dynamics of DEVS models. This paper deals with performance evaluation of P-DEVSIM ++, a parallel simulation environment which implements the DEVS formalism and associated simulation algorithms in a parallel environment. Performance simulator has been developed and used to experiment models of parallel simulation executions in different conditions. The experimental result shows that simulation time depends on both the number of processors in the parallel system and the communication overheads among such processors.

  • In this paper, we introduce the concept of web-based simulation and some reviews on the distributed simulation on the World Wide Web (WWW) and classify the features of current web-based simulation under the distributed way. And then we suggest the structure of distributed web-based simulation which can achieve parallel simulation and reduce simulation run time and show how the callback mechanism works to enable the distributions of jobs to clients with push service in Remote Method Invocation (RMI). Finally we present a prototype of distributed web-based simulation.

This paper describes P-DEVSIM++which is a parallel version of DEVSIM++ . In P-DEVSIM++, the external and internal event of DEVS models can by processed in parallel. For such processing, we propose a parallel, distributed optimistic simulation algorithm based on the Time Warp approach. However, the proposed algorithm localizes the rollback of a model within itself, not possible in the standard Time Warp approach. An advantage of such localization is that the simulation time may be reduced. To evaluate its performance, we simulate a single bus multiprocessor architecture system with an external common memory. Simulation result shows that significant speedup is made possible with our algorithm in a parallel environment.

  • There are two approaches to handle the Causality Error in parallel and distributed simulation. One approach is based on the conservative time synchronization and the other is the optimistic time synchronization. In this paper an efficient null message reduction method for the conservative time synchronization approach is suggested with the experimental results, which could improve performance of simulation and avoid deadlock situations.

  • Parallel simulation is an efficient way to cope with long runtimes and high computational requirements in simulations of modern complex integrated electronic circuits and systems. This paper presents an algorithm for parallel simulation based on parallelization in equation formulation and simultaneous calculation of matrix contributions for nonlinear analog elements. In addition, the paper describes the development of a grid interface for a parallel simulator that enables a designer to perform simulations on distant computer clusters. Performances of the developed parallel simulation algorithm are evaluated by simulation of a microelectromechanical system.

  • Medium access control is critical in wireless networks for efficient spectrum utilization. In this paper, we introduce a novel collision resolution method based on the technique of known interference cancellation, and propose a new MAC protocol named as CR-MAC, in which AP tries to decode all the collided data packets by combining partial retransmissions and known interference cancellation. As the collided transmissions are fully utilized, less retransmission is required, especially in a crowded network. The NS-2simulation and MATLAB numerical results show that, under various network settings, CR-MAC performs much better than the IEEE 802.11 DCF in terms of the aggregation throughput and the expected packet delay.
