The purpose of a parallel scheduling is to carry out the scheduling with the minimum synchronization overhead and bottleneck under a multiprocessor environment and to perform load balance for a parallel iteration. In this paper, analyse the conventional parallel scheduling methods and drive the problems from each method in order to achive the minimum scheduling overhead and load balance. These problems will go far toward solving the design of effective algorithm.
The purpose of a parallel scheduling under a multiprocessor environment is to carry out the scheduling with the minimum synchronization overhead, and to perform load balance for a parallel application program. The processors calculate the chunk of iteration and are allocated to carry out the parallel iteration. At this time, it frequently accesses mutually exclusive global memory so that there are a lot of scheduling overhead and bottleneck imposed. And also, when the distribution of the parallel iteration in the allocated chunk to the processor is different, the different execution time of each chunk causes the load imbalance and badly affects the capability of the all scheduling. In the paper. we investigate the problems on the conventional algorithms in order to achieve the minimum scheduling overhead and load balance. we then present a new parallel loop scheduling algorithm, considering the locality of the data and processor affinity.

In general, there are two synchronization methods in parallel event-driven simulation, pessimistic approach and optimistic approach. In this paper, we propose a new approach, sporadic synchronization combining both for prediction-based parallel event-driven logic simulation. We claim this hybrid solution is pretty effective to minimize both checkpoint overhead and restart overhead, which are related problems with frequent false predictions for improving the performance of the prediction-based parallel event-driven logic simulation. The experiment has clearly shown the advantage of the proposed approach.

As processor design has been transiting from homogeneous multicore processor to heterogeneous multicore processor, traditional Amdahl's law cannot meet the new challenges for asymmetric multicore system. In order to further investigate the impact factors related to the Overhead of Data Preparation (ODP) for Asymmetric multicore systems, we evaluate an asymmetric multicore system built with CPU-GPU by measuring the overheads of memory transfer, computing kernel, cache missing and synchronization. This paper demonstrates that decreasing the overhead of data preparation is a promising approach to improve the whole performance of heterogeneous system.

In this paper, anew parallel event-driven logic simulation is proposed. As the proposed prediction-based parallel event-driven simulation method uses both prediction data and actual data for the input and output values of local simulations executed in parallel, the synchronization overhead and the communication overhead, the major bottleneck of the performance improvement, are greatly reduced. Through the experimentation with multiple designs, we have observed the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
This study analyzes the impact of regular preventive maintenance (PM) on reducing the failure rate and occurrence of falling accidents of industrial overhead doors. A reliable safety device model with an additional safety device, which is installed to replace a defective one, is proposed. The research methodology involves collecting breakdown and falling accident records, comparing and analyzing data before and after regular PM implementation, and experimenting with two types of retrofittable safety devices. Key findings are as follows. 1. Regular PM implementation significantly reduces the failure rate of old overhead doors. 2. A parallel structured model with two alternative safety devices can minimize falling accident risks. The study's contributions include the following. 1. The positive impact of PM on extending overhead door lifespan is quantified. 2. A general safety device model that can be retrofitted and used as replacement with a fail-safe function is proposed.

The message passing interface (MPI) and hybrid programming models for the parallel computation of a pressure equation were compared in a distributed memory system. Both models were based on domain decomposition, and two numbers of the sub-domain were selected by considering the efficiency of the hybrid model. The parallel performances for various problem sizes were measured using up to 96 threads. It was found that in addition to the cache-memory size, the overhead of the MPI communication/OpenMP directives affected the parallel performance. For small problems, the parallel performance was low because the percentage of the overhead of the MPI communication/OpenMP directives increased as the number of threads increased, and MPI was better than the hybrid model because it had a smaller communication overhead. For large problems, the parallel performance was high because, in addition to the cache effect, the percentage of the communication overhead was relatively low compared to that for small problems, and the hybrid model was better than MPI because the communication overhead of MPI was more dominant than that of the OpenMP directives in the hybrid model.

The DC overhead line voltage of an electric railway substation swings depending on the accelerating and regenerative-braking energy of trains, and it deteriorates the energy quality of the electric facility in the DC railway substation and restricts the powering and braking performance of subway trains. Recently, an energy storage system or a regenerative inverter has been introduced into railway traction substations to diminish both the variance of the overhead line voltage and the peak power consumption. In this study, the variance of the overhead line voltage in a DC railway substation is modelled by RC parallel circuits in each feeder, and the RC parameters are estimated using the recursive least mean square (RLMS) scheme. The forgetting factor values for the RLMS are selected using simulated annealing optimization, and the modelling scheme of the overhead line voltage variation is evaluated through raw data measured in a downtown railway substation.

The sorting algorithms have been developed to take advantage of distributed computers. But the speedup of parallel sorting algorithms decrease rapidly with increased number of processors due to parallel processing overhead such as context switching time and inter-processor communication cost. In this paper, we propose a parallel sorting method which provides linear speedup of an optimal serial algorithm for a system with a large number of processors. This algorithm may even provide superlinear speedup for a practical system. The algorithm takes advantage of an interconnection network properties and its protocol.

This paper presents two sequential advanced split and merge algorithms and a parallel image segmentation algorithm based on them. First, the two advanced methods are obtained from the combination of edge detection and classic split and merge to solve the inherent problems of the classical method. Besides, the parallel image segmentation algorithm on mesh-connected MIMD system considers three types in the merge stage to reduce the communication overhead between processors, such as intraprocessor merge, interprocessor with boundary merge, and interprocessor without boundary merge. Finally , we prove that the proposed algorithms achieve the improved performance by implementing them.
