  • This paper investigates the direct adaptive control of nonlinear systems using RBFN(radial basis function networks). The structure of the controller consists of a fixed PD controller and a RBFN controller in parallel. An adaptation law for the weight adjustment is developed based on the Lyapunov stability theory to guarantee the stability of the overall control scheme. Also, the tracking errors between the system outputs and the desired outputs converge to zero asymptotically. To evaluate the performance of the controller, the proposed method is applied to the trajectory control of the two-link manipulator.

  • In this paper, the numerical inverse kinematics analysis is presented for a collaborative robot with an offset wrist. Robot manipulators with offset wrist are widely used in industrial applications, due to many advantages over those with wrist center and those with three parallel axes such as simple mechanical design, light weight, and so on. There may not exist a closed-form solution for a robot manipulator with offset wrist. A simple numerical method is applied to solve the inverse kinematics with offset wrist. Singularity is analyzed using Jacobian matrix and the numerical inverse kinematics algorithm is implemented on the real-time controller.

  • This paper discusses the neural network application in the study on the obstacle avoidance of robot manipulator during the trajectory planning. The collision problem of two robot manipulators which are simultaneously moving in the same workspace is investigated. Instead of the traditional modeling method, this paper processing based on the calculation of joint angle in the cartesian coordinate with constrained condition shows the possibility of real time control. The problem of the falling into the local minima is cleared by the adaptive weight factor control using the temperature adding method. Computer simulations are shown for the verification.

  • In this paper, the dynamic crawling of a five-bar planar mechanism is investigated. One complete cycle of the crawling selected in this study consists of four different steps, i) sliding at one contact point between the mechanism and the ground, ii) changing its configuration without sliding at two contact points, iii) sliding at the other contact point, and iv) again changing its configuration without sliding at two contact points. In this type of crawling, the crawling mechanism maintains the shape of the parallel structure throughout a complete crawling cycle. The modeling algorithm for serial manipulators proposed by M. Thomas and et al.[1] is employed by introducing imaginary joints and links which represent the contact interfaces between the one end of the mechanism and the ground, while the other end of the mechanism is regarded as an end-effector of the imaginary serial manipulator which treats the reaction force and torque at the contact point as external forces. Then, a complete cycle of dynamic crawling of the mechanism is investigated through various computer simulations. The simulation result show that the stable crawling characteristics of the mechanism could be secured when the proper configurations depending on specified frictional constraints are met.

  • Flexure joints are recently used in the ultra-precision mechanism for a telecommunication mirror stage. Flexure joints have several advantages coming from their monolithic characteristics. They can be used to reduce the size of manipulators or to increase the precision of motion. In our research, 6 dof(degree of freedom) mechanism is suggested for micrometer repeatability using a flexure mechanism. To design the 6-dof motion, the 2-dof planar mechanism are designed and assembled to make the 6-dof motion. To achieve a certain performance, it is necessary to define the performance of mechanism that quantifies the characteristics of flexure joints. This paper addresses the analysis and design of the 6-dof parallel manipulator with a flexure joint using a finite element analysis tool. To obtain experimental result, CCD laser displacement sensor is used for the total displacement and the stiffness for the 6-dof flexure mechanism.

  • Recently, the robotic assist system for cardiovascular intervention gets continuously growing interest. The robotic cardiovascular intervention systems are largely two folds, systems for cardiac ablation procedure assist and systems for vascular intervention assist. For the systems, the clinician controls the catheter inserted through blood vessel to the heart via a master console or master manipulator. Most of the current master manipulators have structure of joystick-like pivoting 2 degree of freedom (DOF) handle in the core, which is used in parallel with other sliding switches and input devices. It however is desirable to have customized and optimized design manipulator that can provide clinician with intuitive control of the catheter motion fully utilizing the advantage of the use of robotic structure. A 6 DOF kinematic mechanism that can capture the motion control intention of the clinician in translational 3 DOF and rotational 3 DOF is proposed in this paper. Also, a master-slave motion relationship specially designed for the cardiac catheter manipulation motion is proposed and implemented in an experimental prototype. Design revision for implementation of more efficient motion and experiment in combination with an experimental slave robot system for catheter manipulation are underway.
