One of the desired features for the realizations of high quality Information and Telecommunication services in future is "the Sensation of Reality". This will be achieved only with the visual communication based on the 3- dimensional (3-D) moving images. The main difficulties in realizing 3-D moving image communication are that there is no developed data transmission technology for the hugh amount of data involved in 3-D images and no established technologies for 3-D image recording and displaying in real time. The currently known stereoscopic imaging technologies can only present depth, no moving parallax, so they are not effective in creating the sensation of the reality without taking eye glasses. The more effective 3-D imaging technologies for achieving the sensation of reality are those based on the multiview 3-D images which provides the object image changes as the eyes move to different directions. In this paper, a multiview 3-D imaging system composed of 8 CCD cameras in a case, a RGB(Red, Green, Blue) beam projector, and a holographic screen is introduced. In this system, the 8 view images are recorded by the 8 CCD cameras and the images are transmitted to the beam projector in sequence by a signal converter. This signal converter converts each camera signal into 3 different color signals, i.e., RGB signals, combines each color signal from the 8 cameras into a serial signal train by multiplexing and drives the corresponding color channel of the beam projector to 480Hz frame rate. The beam projector projects images to the holographic screen through a LCD shutter. The LCD shutter consists of 8 LCD strips. The image of each LCD strip, created by the holographic screen, forms as sub-viewing zone. Since the ON period and sequence of the LCD strips are synchronized with those of the camera image sampling adn the beam projector image projection, the multiview 3-D moving images are viewed at the viewing zone.
3D stereo display systems gain more interests recently. Multiple-view autostereoscopic display system enables observers to watch stereo image from multiple viewpoints not wearing specific devices such as shutter glasses or HMD. Therefore, the Multiple-view autostereoscopic display is being spotlighted in the field of virtual reality, mobile, 3D TV and so on. However, one of the critical disadvantages of the system is that observer can enjoy the system only in a small designated area where the system is designed to work properly. This research provides an effective way of GPU based rendering technique to present seamless 3D stereo experiences from an arbitrary observer's view position.
A two dimensional point light source array can replace both the viewing zone forming optics and the back light panel in the contact-type 3 dimensional imaging systems based on LC panels. This replacement can make the system structure of the 3 dimensional imaging systems no different from that of the conventional LCD and can reduce undesirable visual effects caused by the viewing zone forming optics. The problem with the point light source array is the visual quality deterioration of the system due to the non-ideal nature of the array.

In this paper, we propose a generation of 2D elemental images for 3D objects using Kinect in 3D depth-priority integral imaging (DPII) display. First, we analyze a principle to pickup elemental images based on ray optics. Based on our analysis, elemental images are generated with both RGB image and depth image recorded from Kinect. We reconstruct 3D images from the elemental images with the computational integral imaging reconstruction technique and then compare various perspective images. To show the usefulness of the proposed method, we carried out the preliminary experiments. The experimental results reveal that our method can provide correct 3D images with full parallax.
This paper proposes a photogrammetric rectification method based on Bayesian approach as a method that eliminates vertical parallax between stereo images to minimize visual fatigue of 3D contents. The image rectification consists of two phases; geometry estimation and epipolar transformation. For geometry estimation, coplanarity-based relative orientation algorithm was used in this paper. To ensure robustness for mismatch and localization error occurred by automation of tie point extraction, Bayesian approach was applied by introducing several prior constraints. As epipolar transformation perspective transformation was used based on condition of collinearity to minimize distortion of result images and modification for input images. Other algorithms were compared to evaluate performance. For geometry estimation, traditional relative orientation algorithm, 8-points algorithm and stereo calibration algorithm were employed. For epipolar transformation, Hartley algorithm and Bouguet algorithm were employed. The evaluation results showed that the proposed algorithm produced results with high accuracy, robustness about error sources and minimum image modification.
This paper describes a displacement mapping technique which represents protruded shapes on the surface of an object. Previous approaches for image-based displacement mapping can represent only shapes depressed from the polygon surface. The proposed technique can represent shapes protruded from the underlying surface in real-time. Two auxiliary surfaces which are perpendicular to the underlying surface are added along the boundary of the polygon surface, in order to represent the pixels which overflow over the boundary of the polygon surface. The proposed approach can represent accurate silhouette of protruded shape. It can represent not only smooth displacement of protruded shape, but also abrupt displacement such as perpendicular protrusion by means of adding the supplementary texture information to the steep surface of protruded shape. By per-pixel instructions on the programmable GPU this approach can be executed in real-time. It provides an effective solution for the representation of protruded shape such as high-rise buildings on the ground.

There are several researches on 2D gaze tracking techniques for the 2D screen for the Human-Computer Interaction. However, the researches for the gaze-based interaction to the stereo images or contents are not reported. The 3D display techniques are emerging now for the reality service. Moreover, the 3D interaction techniques are much more needed in the 3D contents service environments. This paper addresses gaze-based 3D interaction techniques on stereo display, such as parallax barrier or lenticular stereo display. This paper presents our researches on 3D gaze estimation and gaze-based interaction to stereo display.
The stereoscopic camera based on the image formation principle on human eyes and the brain is designed and fabricated by using a CCD and two zoom lenses. As two zoom lenses are separated as 65 mm of the human ocular distance with the wide angle of view of $50^{\circ}$ and the variable convergence angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $16^{\circ}$, the camera can be operated by the similar binocular parallax as human eyes. In order to take the dynamic stereoscopic picture, a shutter blade for the selection of the left and right images in turns, an X-cube image combiner fur the composition of these two images through the blade, and a CCD with 60 frames per second are used.
Purpose: This study relates to the development of the day and night scope using the reflecting surface of a BS (beam splitting) prism. Methods: We have placed the LCD panel and the dot reticle generator to the top and bottom of the reflecting surface of the BS prism, and have placed a reflector, which is designed to doublet type, in the front of the BS prism. Doing so, we have developed a new type of day and night scope, which is able to image the virtual image of dot reticle from the dot reticle generator to the direction of the observer, to make the observer survey the peripheral information of the outside target by 1x magnification, and to make the observer survey the image of the LCD panel directly. Results: We could develope a new type of day and night scope, which has the function of night scope as thermal image display device at night time and the function of day scope as dot sight at day time, by letting the reflective surface of the BS prism have the role of dot sight which reflects the dot reticle and have the role of reflective optical system by which the observer surveys the night thermal image displayed in LCD panel. Conclusions: In this study, we have developed the new type of day and night scope which is able to play the role of the day or night scope selectively, combining the existing dot sight and the existing night scope by using the BS prism. By doing so, we could design and fabricate the new type of day and night scope with the BS prism which can further increase the rapidity of firing and provide more convenience in the mounting of a firearm than the detachable combination of an existing dot sight and an existing night scope.
A method to measure the speed and distance of moving object is proposed using the stereo vision system. One of the most important factors for measuring the speed and distance of moving object is the accuracy of object tracking. Accordingly, the background image algorithm is adopted to track the rapidly moving object and the local opening operator algorithm is used to remove the shadow and noise of object. The extraction efficiency of moving object is improved by using the adaptive threshold algorithm independent to variation of brightness. Since the left and right central points are compensated, the more exact speed and distance of object can be measured. Using the background image algorithm and local opening operator algorithm, the computational processes are reduced and it is possible to achieve the real-time processing of the speed and distance of moving object. The simulation results show that background image algorithm can track the moving object more rapidly than any other algorithm. The application of adaptive threshold algorithm improved the extraction efficiency of the target by reducing the candidate areas. Since the central point of the target is compensated by using the binocular parallax, the error of measurement for the speed and distance of moving object is reduced. The error rate of measurement for the distance from the stereo camera to moving object and for the speed of moving object are 2.68% and 3.32%, respectively.
