This paper describes a new approach to minimize the amount of shrinkage cracking in cement treated base(CTB). CTB is a stiffness base having lots of merits such as higher rutting resistance, minimizing fatigue cracking, and the ability to distribute upper loads. However, It is not applied to asphalt pavement system in Korea because of possible cracks caused by dry shrinkage. The goal of this study is the development of cement treated base with lower shrinkage for preventing reflection cracks and rutting. After identifying factors affecting dry shrinkage and analyzing mechanism of each admixture, the laboratory and field tests were designed and performed. Through the preliminary tests, the mix design containing 25 percent o( fly ash and 7 percent of cement was suggested. This mix design was satisfied with strength for Korea specification standard. According to the results considering strength, shrinkage, and economical efficiency, two mix designs were selected; 1) containing 25 percent of fly ash and 2) containing 25 percent of fly ash with 10 percent of expensive additive. For field test based on the result of laboratory test, the optimized alternative in cement treated base with lower shrinkage was the mix design containing 25 percent of fly ash with 10 percent of expansive additive.
The increase of industrial carbonic dioxide emissions has accelerated the carbonation of reinforced concrete structures, which drops off their durability. Although advanced countries have already taken safety control measures against the carbonation of RC structures, it is still difficult now to accurately predict the actual carbonation depth. Additionally, it requires much time and efforts. Recently, it is possible to get the data more rapidly through accelerated carbonation test with the $CO_2$ concentration of 100%. In this paper, the carbonation test results obtained by two test methods such as the normal carbonation test method and the accelerated carbonation test method, were compared to investigate the carbonation characteristics of fly ash concrete. The accelerated carbonation test on concrete specimens with the pre-curing age of 180 days was also carried out to examine the carbonation characteristics of fly ash concrete at long-term age. Consequently, fly ash concrete at early age was vulnerable to carbonation and however, its carbonation resistance at long-term ages was improved compared with OPC concrete.

The unturned carbon in fly ash, recently occurred in the coal-fired Yong Hung power station, caused some problems in ash utilization and boiler efficiency. This paper describes the analysis of unburned carbon and six coals, some tests performed at Yong Hung Boiler, and the results of combustion modification for the reduction of unburned carbon in fly ash. From the physical and chemical analysis of unburned carbon in fly ash, most particles were turned out to be hollow cenosphere and agglomerated soot particles. The sooting potential from six coals used in the plant were investigated with CPD(Chemical Percolation Devolatilization) model. The results showed that the higher potential was presented to Peabody, Arthur, Shenhua coals rather than other coals. It was necessary to measure the coal flow rates at each coal feeding pipe for four burner levels since they affect the extent of mixing of soot with oxidant, in turn, the oxidation rate of soot particles. The unbalance in coal flow rate was found in several coal pipes. We successfully reduced unturned carbon in ash by increasing the excess air and changing the SOFA's yaw angle.

Recently, numerous studies were dedicated on the HVFA concrete using high volume CCPs. In initial studies, main topics are dependent on material properties of HVFA concrete, but several studies were dedicated on the structural behavior of HVFA concrete such as elasticity modulus, stress-strain relationship and structural behavior nowadays. Therefore, in this paper, on the basis of recent studies on the structural behavior, 2 large-scale test members were manufactured with 7.5m span length and fly ash replacement ratio 50%, concrete compressive strength 50MPa in order to apply to the practical structure and evaluate possibility of application. From the test results, although there were small differences between test results and existing research results on the stress-strain relationship, the application to practical structure is not hard. In flexural test, as the produced pattern of displacement and strain were similar to those of general concrete without fly ash, the difference between 50% fly ash concrete and general concrete is very small. And the concrete shear strength obtained by test was similar to that of design code, so existing design code will be also able to apply.

When RC(Reinforced Concrete) structures are exposed to harsh environment, deterioration phenomenon occurs, and the corrosion in rebar due to chloride intrusion is known as representative deterioration, so called chloride attack. In this paper, chloride resistance performance of 2 years aged concrete is evaluated considering 3 levels of water to binder ratio(0.37, 0.42, and 0.47) and 2 levels of substitution ratio of fly ash(0% and 30%). Accelerated chloride diffusion coefficient tests referred to Tang's method, total passed charge tests referred to ASTM C 1202, and compressive strength tests referred to KS F 2405 are performed. With adaptation of the previous test results and the results from this study, time-dependent chloride diffusion characteristics are analyzed for each concrete. The FA(Fly Ash) concrete has higher chloride resistance performance than OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) concrete. According to the evaluation standard of ASTM C 1202, the FA concrete has "Moderate" grade after 49 days while OPC concrete does "Moderate" grade after 365 days. As the results of time-parameter for chloride diffusion, OPC concrete and FA concrete show the decreasing behavior of time-parameters with increasing water to binder ratio. Also, FA concrete has 1.57~2.74 times of time-parameter than OPC concrete. That's cause is thought that the time-parameter indicates the gradient of decreasing of diffusion coefficient. FA concrete has higher time-parameters than OPC concrete by pozzolanic reaction of FA.
This paper has investigated physicochemical properties and conventional and environmental-friendly treatment methods of paper mill sludge to emphasize the importance and necessity of the sludge recycling. The paper mill sludge generally shows high contents of calcium and water, and is mostly discharged by landfill after incineration process rather than being recycled due to technical or economical problems. In recent years, however, several possible methods for recycling the paper mill sludge have been suggested for its sustainable process as follows; compost, raw material for the construction and paper industry, new energy source for reducing fossil fuel use and raw material of activated carbon for treating paper mill wastewater. Thus the authors suggest that practical recycling technologies of the paper mill sludge must be developed for substantiality in the paper industry through comprehending physicochemical compositions and generation status of the sludge and actively performing various related studies. Furthermore, this investigation could be used as preliminary information for the study on recycled paper development using paper mill sludge incineration ash.

In this work an integrated model for paper plants combining wet-end and dry section is developed and a model predictive control scheme based on the plant model is proposed. Closed-loop process identification method is employed to produce a state-space model. Thick stock, filler flow, machine speed and steam pressure are selected as Input variables and basis weight, ash content and moisture content are considered as output variables. The desired output trajectory is constructed in the form of 1st-order dynamics. Results of simulations for control of grade change operations are compared with plant operation data collected during the grade change operations under the same conditions as in simulations. From the comparison, we can see that the proposed model predictive control scheme reduces the grade change time and achieves stable steady-state.

Cylinder machine usually gives more fiber orientation than fourdrinier and has limitation in machine speed because of fiber wash-off caused by centrifugal force when machine speed increases. This study aimed for the improvement of paper formation and productivity by setting an apron in vat inlet and by adjusting mould water head. Improvement of formation and increase of machine speed were achieved, which ultimately improve productivity. Installing an apron successfully decreased fiber wash-off. Fiber orientation and two-sideness of ash distribution became less severe. The proper adjustment of water head inside the cylinder mould proved to be an important factor not only in paper formation but also in decreasing paper two-sideness.

In an effort to develop control strategies for the wet-end of paper machines, dynamic models for retention and formation processes have been developed. The retention process, including headbox total and filler consistencies, white water total and filler consistencies, the basis weight and the ash content of paper, can be modeled from first-principles (mass balances). To include the effect of wet-end chemistry variables, first-pass retention was included as a parameter dependent on operating conditions. In addition, dynamics of formation was simulated by developing an empirical model of formation and coupling with the dynamic models for the retention process. A series of experiments were performed using a pilot paper machine. The experimental results and the model predictions showed relatively good agreement.

This paper is a comparative analysis of the $19^{th}$ century practice of indigo dyes and dyeing in Korea and England. From over hundreds species of indigo plants in the world, it was dyer's knotweed and woad that were cultivated in Korea; however, the only indigo plant grown in England was woad. Indigo dye was produced in the form of damp indigo sediment (jeon) in Korea; however, imported indigo (as a main dye) and couched woad (as an additional dye) were indigo dyes used in England. There existed three kinds of indigo vats, the ice vat, ash-water vat, and indigo sediment (jeon) vat, in Korea. The fresh leaves of indigo were used for both the ice vat and ash-water vat. The ice vat was very convenient for preparation, but had a weakness in the inability to produce a very deep shade of blue. The ash-water vat and indigo sediment (jeon) vat were in use for producing a very deep shade of blue. The indigo sediment Goon) vat was employed presumably only by professional dyers. The indigo vat practiced in England was categorized into two types; one was woad-indigo vat, and the other was an indigo powder vat prepared by using imported indigo rock. There was a tendency to adopt different kinds of indigo vats according to the material to be dyed. The woad-indigo vat was employed for the dyeing of wool. A few of chemical vats with imported indigo were adopted, especially for the dyeing of cotton. Indigo dyers in 19th century Korea were differentiated from the rest of the dyers. They managed the growing of indigo plants as well as the production of indigo sediment (jeon). Woad dyers in 19th century England handled woolen cloth as well as worsted and woolen yarn in general. However, they sometimes dyed silk skein as well. They produced several colors such as black, blue, slates, grays, by using both woad and imported indigo.
