  • The static characteristics of a five-pad tilting pad journal bearing of load on pad (LOP) type have been investigated experimentally under the different values of bearing load and shaft speed. The diameter and length of the bearing are 300.91 mrn and 149.8 mm, reslx;ctively. Circumferential distribution of the film pressure, film thickness, journal surface temperature and beating surface temperature are measured. A noticeable inlet pressure rise is observed at the entrance of each pad, especially the bottom pad. The inlet pressure is increased by the increase of shaft speed as well as bearing load. In the five-pad tilting pad joumal bearing of LOP type, almost all of beating load is being carried only by the bottom pad. The maximum bearing surface temperature is observed at near the minimum film thickness. It is observed that the metal temperature of the mid-plane is higher than that of the edge at the inlet region, while the metal temperature of the edge is higher than that of the mid-plane at the outlet region.

  • With the increase in adoption of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs), various failure mechanisms related to TPJBs have been reported, of which pad wear is a frequently reported one. Pad wear causes change in geometry of the bearing, which can sometimes result in the failure of the entire system. The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of pad wear on the pad temperature, which is one of the widely used condition monitoring methods for TPJBs. For the theoretical investigation, thermohydrodynamic (THD) analysis was conducted by solving the generalized Reynolds equation and the 3D energy equation. The results of the analysis show that the temperature of the loaded pad increases while that of the unloaded pad decreases, when there is wear on the loaded pads. In addition, the minimum film thickness decreases with an increase in the wear depth. A validation test was conducted with a test rig, which mimics the axial turbine when a test rotor is supported by two TPJBs. The test bearing consists of five pads with a diameter of 60 mm, and a resistance temperature detector (RTD) is installed in the pad for temperature monitoring. The test was performed by replacing the two loaded pads with the worn pad. The test result for the TPJB with wear depth of $30{\mu}m$ show that the temperatures of the loaded pads are $8^{\circ}C$ higher and that of the unloaded pad is $2.5^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the normal TPJB. In addition, the predicted pad temperature shows good agreement with the measured pad temperatures.

  • In this study, a test system which can test performance of curling pad was developed to support Korea curling team. The developed system consists of a water tank, a mechanical pad driving system that can perform sweeping movement using a curling pad on surface of ice made by the water tank, and temperature sensors monitoring ice and air temperatures. To control the temperature of ice and humidity/temperature of air around the ice, all system are installed in a chamber that can isolate the developed system from external environment. Eight kinds of curling pads were tested using the developed system. Test result showed that each curling pad revealed different rate of ice temperature increasing. The pad with the highest rate of ice temperature rising was found to be the same as the most preferred pad by the athletes. Therefore, it was confirmed that the method of measuring change of ice temperature by the sweeping performed in this study is an effective method to test the performance of the pad.

  • Tilting pad journal bearings(TPJBs) are widely used for high speed rotating machinery owing to their rotordynamic stability and thermal management feature. With increase in the rotating speed of such machinery, an increasingly important aspect of TPJB design is the prediction of their thermal behaviors. Researchers have conducted detailed investigations in the last two decades, which provided design tools for the TPJBs. Based on these previous studies, this paper presents a thermohydrodynamic(THD) analysis model for TPJBs. To calculate pressure distribution, we solve the generalized Reynolds equation and to predict the lubricant temperature, we solve the 3D energy equation. We employ the oil mixing theory to calculate pad inlet temperature; further, to consider heat conduction via the pad, we solve the heat conduction equation for the pads. We assume the shaft temperature as the averaged oil film temperature and apply natural convection boundary conditions to the pad side and back surfaces. To validate the analysis model, we compare the predicted pad temperatures with those from previous research. The results show good agreement with previous research. In addition, we conduct parametric studies on a TPJB which was used in a gas turbine simulator system. The predicted results show that film temperature largely depends on the rotating speed and oil supply condition.

  • Chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) performances can be optimized by several process parameters such as equipment and consumables (pad, backing film and slurry). Pad properties are important in determining removal rate and planarization ability of a CMP process. It is investigated the performance of oxide CMP process using commercial silica slurry after the pad conditioning temperature was varied. Conditioning process with the high temperature made the slurry be unrestricted to flow and be hold, which made the removal rate of oxide film increase. The pad became softer and flexible as the conditioning temperature increases. Then the softer pad provided the better surface planarity of oxide film without defect.

  • This study were performed to find the cooling effect and to provide design data during summer season for the Pad& Fan system of greenhouse . The temperature variation along the greenhouse width were analyzed. Also, the effect of the pad location and fan capacity on the cooling of the greenhouse were analyzed. While Pad &Fan systems were operating the temperatures in greenhouse were very different along the meausring locations. It is recommeded that PAD location and FAN capacity should be considered to design the Fan and Pad system in order to provide greenhouse the optimum temperature condition.

  • This paper presents the thermohydrodynamic analysis of tilting journal pad bearings supporting a power turbine rotor applied to a 250 kW super-critical $CO_2$ cycle. In the analysis, the generalized Reynolds equation and 3D energy equation are solved to predict oil film temperature and the 3D heat conduction equation is solved for pad temperature. The power turbine rotor is supported by two tilting pad bearings consisting of five pads with an oil supply block between the pads. Copper backing pads with higher thermal conductivity compared to steel backing pads are adopted to improve thermal management. The predicted maximum pad temperature is around $55^{\circ}C$ which is approximately $15^{\circ}C$ higher than oil supply temperature. In addition, the predicted minimum film thickness is 50 mm at a rotating speed of 5,000 rpm. These results indicate that there is no issue in the thermal behavior of the bearing. An operation test is performed with a power turbine module consisting of a power turbine, a reduction gear and a generator. Thermocouples are installed at the 75% position from the leading edge of the pad to monitor pad temperature. The power turbine uses compressed air at a temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ in its operation. The steady state pad temperatures measured in the test show good agreement with the predicted temperatures.

  • The effects of the temperature rise and the turbulence are very important factors to predict the accurate performance of a large tilting pad journal bearing. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of a large tilting pad journal bearing are analyzed, taking into account the three dimensional variation of lubricant viscosity and turbulence. The effects of the temperature rise and the turbulence on the stiffness and damping coefficients are investigated in comparison with the results from the laminar or isothermal theory. The stiffness and damping coefficients increase due to the turbulence but decrease due to the temperature rise. The results show that the effects of both the temperature rise and turbulence must be considered simultaneously in order to predict the dynamic characteristics of a large tilting pad journal bearing more accurately.

  • There are many factors affecting the results of CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing). Among them, the temperature is related to the removal rate and WIWNU (Within Wafer Non-Uniformity). In other words, the removal rate is proportional to the temperature and the variation of temperature distribution on a pad affects the non-uniformity within a wafer. In the former case, the active chemistry improves the rate of chemical reaction and the removal rate becomes better. But, there are not many advanced studies. In the latter case, a kinematical analysis between work-piece and pad can be obtained. And such result analysed from the mechanical aspect can be directly related to the temperature distribution on a pad affecting WIWNU. Meanwhile, the temperature change affects the quantities of both slurry and pad. The change of a pH value of the slurry chemistry due to a temperature variation affects the surface state of an abrasive particle and hence the agglomeration of abrasives happens above the certain temperature. And the pH alteration also affects the zeta potential of a pad surface and therefore the electrical force between pad and abrasive changes. Such results could affect the removal rate and etc. Moreover, the temperature changes the 1st and 2nd elastic moduli of a pad which are closely related to the removal rate and the WIWNU.
