  • The contact surfaces between mold and target should be in parallel for a proper imprinting process. However, large size of contacting area makes it difficult for both mating surfaces (mold and target planes) to be in all uniform contact with the expected precision level in terms of thickness and position. This is caused by the waviness of mold and target although it is very small relative to the area scale. The gripping force for both mold and target by the vacuum chuck is other major effect to interrupt the uniform contact, which must be avoided in imprinting mechanism. In this study, the cause of non-conformal contact mechanism between mold and target is investigated with the consideration of deformation due to the vacuum gripping for the size $470{\times}370\;mm^2$ LCD panel.

  • The control of springback is very important in sheet metal forming since springback affects the dimensional inaccuracy of product. The object of this study is to design the manufacturing process for the improvement of the performance of seat rail by DP780. The influence of process variables such as bend angle and pad force on the springback has been firstly investigated through the comparison between the results of FE-analysis and trial out for initial design based on designer's experience. The process variables of the initial design have been modified in order to improve the dimensional accuracy of seat rail from the prediction of springback by FE-analysis. It was shown from experiment that the improved design satisfied the required specifications such as the dimensional accuracy and the strength of seat rail.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between CMP(Chemical Mechanical Polishing) characteristics of ITO thin film and friction signal by using the CMP monitoring system. Suba 400 pad and MSW2000 slurry of the Rohm & Haas Co. was used in this experiment to investigate the charateristics of ITO CMP. From this experiment, it is proven that the coefficient of friction is related to uniformity of the removal rate of the ITO thin film. Therefore, the prediction of polishing result would be possible by measuring friction signal.

  • Micro-structure and shear properties with reflow conditions, reflow temperature and time, for In-48Sn solder on BGA package were examined at the temperature between 140 and 170$^{\circ}C$ for 10 to 3600sec. With increasing reflow temperature and time, the thickness of intermetallic compound formed between solder and pad increased. Shear test indicated shear force increased in the range to a critical value of reflow time, and decreased over a critical reflow time. With increasing reflow temperature and time, the crater occurred on fracture surface because of a increase of crater by voids and IMC particles precipitated in solder.

  • Experiment on the modal balancing of a flexible rotor supported on two kinds of fluid film bearings is performed to verify the modal balancing theory. The fluid film bearings are a tilting pad bearing and a two axial grooved journal bearing. One is inherently stable, but the other is not. The experimental result shows that the modal balancing method is effective for balancing of a high speed flexible rotor system. Besides, the critical speeds and mode shapes measured experimentally are in good coincidence with the results of rotordynamic analysis. Oil whip, which is the instability phenomenon due to fluid film force, is also observed during the experiment.

  • The Eradi Quake System (EQS) is a seismic isolation bearing system designed to minimize forces and displacements experienced by structures subjected to ground motion. The EQS dissipates seismic energy through friction of Poly Tetra Fluoro Ethylene (PTFE) disk pad. In general, a force-displacement relationship of EQS has post yield stiffness hardening during large inelastic displacement. In this study, seismic responses of seismically isolated nuclear power plant (NPP) subjected to design basis earthquake (DBE) and beyond design basis earthquakes (150% DBE and 167% DBE) are compared considering the post yield stiffness hardening effect of EQS. From the results, it can be observed that if the post-yield stiffness hardening effect of EQS is increased, the displacement response of EQS is reduced, and the acceleration and shear responses of containment structures of NPP is increased.

  • This study presents a suggestion of regulation of skewed slab bridge. In order to find the characteristic behavior of skew bridge, many cases of skew bridges were analyzed with changed angle of skew. The comparison of design methods for cantilever part in pier was also made. It was found that : (1) The lower the skew angle was, the higher the maximum support reaction forces at the end point were. (2) The higher the ratio of L/B was, the higher the maximum support reaction force at the point was. (3) The effect of skew may be neglected for skew angles of $70^{\circ}$or more. (4) If elastic springs are applied to the boundary conditions to simulate the rubber pad bearings, the results will be more reasonable. (5) The shear deformation effect must be considered in the analysis of cantilever part of substructure. (6) Using strut and tie model to design cantilever part of pier, it will be more simple than finite element method with same accuracy and more accurate than using frame element.

  • Within the framework of brake-by-wire technology, this paper presents five types of novel models of electro-mechanical disk brake calipers with self-servo mechanism which provides self-servo effect of boosting a friction force generated between the brake pad and the rotor disk surface. The models have been developed utilizing patent map analysis results of previous invents of electro-mechanical brake calipers. The feasibility of the developed motor-driven brake caliper models have been validated through the dynamic simulation analysis. Among the developed models, the caliper mechanism with separated pressure plate was designed especially in detail and was made as a pilot. The pilot caliper has been installed on the simple test bed constructed with domestic passenger car brake components, and its function and effectiveness have been validated through several types of experimental tests.

  • In magnetic hard disk drives, higher areal recording density requires reduction of head-disk spacing. To overcome the increase of stiction associated with reduction of head-disk spacing, a padder slider, which adds pads to slider's air bearing surface, can be one of the practical solution for sub 20 nm flying height, and even for near contact recording. This study investigated the tribological characteristics of a padder slider. A padder slider took off slowly but showed less friction force than a normal slider. The hot/dry CSS test and drag test indicated that pad wear of a padder slider was negligible. The tribological performance of disk is an important factor to be considered. In particular, less carbon overcoat layer of the disk will result in higher stiction and wear in slider/disk interface. In conclusion, a padder slider shows encouraging tribological performances for practical use in HDD.

The Effect of Abrasive Particles on the Frictional Properties of Automotive Brake Friction Materials (자동차용 마찰재의 연마재가 마찰특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The frictional properties of automotive brake pads with four different ceramic materials such as magnesia, hematite, alumina, and zircon were investigated. A Krauss type friction tester using gray iron disks was used to examine the friction coefficient, intensity of friction force oscillation, and the tribe-surfaces. Results showed that the friction coefficient increased as the hardness of abrasives increases. Friction oscillation was also increased with hardness of the abrasives. However, the friction materials containing less abrasive particles produced stable friction films on the sliding surface. The transition between two-body and three body abrasion during sliding also played a crucial role in destructing the friction film on the pad surface and in determining various frictional properties.
