  • Recently, many researches on detecting and responding worms due to the fatal infrastructural damages explosively damaged by automated attack tools, particularly worms. Network service vulnerability exploiting worms have high propagation velocity, exhaust network bandwidth and even disrupt the Internet. Previous worm researches focused on signature-based approaches however these days, approaches based on behavioral features of worms are more highlighted because of their low false positive rate and the attainability of early detection. In this paper, we propose a Distributed Worm Detection Model based on packet marking. The proposed model detects Worm Cycle and Infection Chain among which the behavior features of worms. Moreover, it supports high scalability and feasibility because of its distributed reacting mechanism and low processing overhead. We virtually implement worm propagation environment and evaluate the effectiveness of detecting and responding worm propagation.

  • Many security threats are occurring around the world due to the characteristics of industrial control systems that can cause serious damage in the event of a security incident including major national infrastructure. Therefore, the industrial control system network traffic should be analyzed so that it can identify the attack in advance or perform incident response after the accident. In this paper, we research the visualization technique as network forensics to enable reasonable suspicion of all possible attacks on DNP3 control system protocol, and define normal action based rules and derive visualization requirements. As a result, we developed a visualization tool that can detect sudden network traffic changes such as DDoS and attacks that contain anormal behavior from captured packet files on industrial control system network. The suspicious behavior in the industrial control system network can be found using visualization tool with Digital Bond packet.

  • MANET composed of only mobile node is applied to various environments because of its advantage which can construct network quickly in emergency situation. However, many routing vulnerabilities are exposed due to the dynamic topology and link failures by the movement of nodes. It can significantly degrade network performance. In this paper, we propose a secure routing protocol based on trust model. The domain-based network structure is used for efficient trust evaluation and management of nodes in the proposed technique. The reliability evaluation of nodes was performed by the discard ratio of control packet and data packet of the nodes. The abnormal nodes are detected by performing traffic check and inspecting of nodes on a path that generates excessive traffic in order to increase the efficiency of routing. It is confirmed through experiments of the proposed technique that data transmission is performed securely even if an attack exists on the path.

  • It is not a practical solution that the DDoS attacks or worm propagations are protected and responded within a domain itself because it clogs access of legitimate users to share communication lines beyond the boundary a domain. Especially, the DDoS attacks with spoofed source address or with bogus packets that the destination addresses are changed randomly but has the valid source address does not allow us to identify access of legitimate users. We propose a scheme of distributed network security management to protect access of legitimate users from the DDoS attacks exploiting randomly spoofed source IP addresses and sending the bogus packets. We assume that Internet is divided into multiple domains and there exists one or more domain security manager in each domain, which is responsible for identifying hosts within the domain. The domain security manager forwards information regarding identified suspicious attack flows to neighboring managers and then verifies the attack upon receiving return messages from the neighboring managers. Through the experiment on a test-bed, the proposed scheme was verified to be able to maintain high detection accuracy and to enhance the. normal packet survival rate.

  • In DRDoS(Distributed Reflective Denial of Service) attacks, the victim is bombarded by packets from legitimate reflector unlike DDoS(Distributed Denial of Service) attacks through zombie, which is more dangerous than DDoS attack because it is in stronger disguise. Therefore, the method of filtering packet method on router are useless. Moreover SCTP(Stream Control Transmission Protocol) multi-homing feature, such as with an improved transmission protocol allows detecting attacks is more difficult and the effect of the attack can be maximized. In this paper we propose a DRDoS detection mechanism based on DRDoS utilizing attention to the characteristics of stateful protocols. The proposed scheme is backed by stateful firewall, and detect DRDoS attacks through a rules table and perform a defense treatment against DRDoS attack. Rules table with a simple structure is possible to easily adapt for any kind of stateful protocol can used by DRDoS attack. The experimental result confirm that our proposed scheme well detect DRDoS attacks using SCTP, the next-generation transmission protocol which not known by victim, and reduce the attacking packets rapidly.

  • We need to check into when a security system is newly developed, we against cyber attack which is expected in real network. However it is impossible to check it under the environment of a large-scale distributive network. So it is need to simulate it under the virtual network environment. SSFNet is a event-driven simulator which can be represent a large-scale network. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the module to simulate security functions. In this paper, we added the IDS module to SSFNet. We implement the IDS module by modeling a key functions of Snort. In addition, we developed some useful functions using Java language which can manipulate easily a packet for network simulation. Finally, we performed the simulation to verify the function if our developed IDS and Packets Manipulation. The simulation shows that our expanded SSFNet can be used to further large-scale security system simulator.

  • After the 9.11 terror attack, lawful Interception (LI) has emerged as an important tool for anti-terrorist activity. Law enforcement agents and administrative government bodies effectively monitor suspicious target users of permanent IP-based network devices by LI in Packet Data Networks (PDNs). However, it is difficult to perform LI in monitoring migrating users from a location to another, who change their IPs due to the proliferation of portable Internet devices enabling 3G IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS). The existing, manual handover technique in 3G IMS makes it even more difficult to continue the LI activities due to time-lag reissuance of LI authority warrants when the target users move to a new LI jurisdiction via a roaming service. Our proposed model is a seamless LI handover mechanism in 3G IMS to support mobility detection of the target users. The LI warrants are transferred to the new LI agent automatically with the target users when they move to a new LI jurisdiction. Thus, time-lag human intervention of reissuance of the LI warrants is removed and enables the LI authorities to continue monitoring. In the simulation of our proposed mechanism, the quality of lawful interception achieves a mean score of over 97.5% out of the possible 100% maximum score, whereas the quality of the existing mechanism has a mean score of 22.725%.

  • Routing in mobile ad hoc networks is performed in a distributed fashion where each node acts as host and router, such that it forwards incoming packets for others without relying on a dedicated router. Nodes are mostly resource constraint and the users are usually inclined to conserve their resources and exhibit selfish behaviour by not contributing in the routing process. The trust and reputation models have been proposed to motivate selfish nodes for cooperation in the packet forwarding process. Nodes having bad trust or reputation are detected and secluded from the network, eventually. However, due to the lack of proper identity management and use of non-persistent identities in ad hoc networks, malicious nodes can pose various threats to these methods. For example, a malicious node can discard the bad reputed identity and enter into the system with another identity afresh, called whitewashing. Similarly, a malicious node may create more than one identity, called Sybil attack, for self-promotion, defame other nodes, and broadcast fake recommendations in the network. These identity-based attacks disrupt the overall detection of the reputation systems. In this paper, we propose a reputation-based scheme that detects selfish nodes and deters identity attacks. We address the issue in such a way that, for normal selfish nodes, it will become no longer advantageous to carry out a whitewash. Sybil attackers are also discouraged (i.e., on a single battery, they may create fewer identities). We design and analyse our rationale via game theory and evaluate our proposed reputation system using NS-2 simulator. The results obtained from the simulation demonstrate that our proposed technique considerably diminishes the throughput and utility of selfish nodes with a single identity and selfish nodes with multiple identities when compared to the benchmark scheme.

  • Pattern matching is one of critical parts of Network Intrusion Prevention Systems (NIPS) and computationally intensive. To handle a large number of attack signature fattens increasing everyday, a network intrusion prevention system requires a multi pattern matching method that can meet the line speed of packet transfer. In this paper, we analyze Snort, a widely used open source network intrusion prevention/detection system, and its pattern matching characteristics. A multi pattern matching method for NIPS should efficiently handle a large number of patterns with a wide range of pattern lengths and case insensitive patterns matches. It should also be able to process multiple input characters in parallel. We propose a multi pattern matching hardware accelerator based on Shift-OR pattern matching algorithm. We evaluate the performance of the pattern matching accelerator under various assumptions. The performance evaluation shows that the pattern matching accelerator can be more than 80 times faster than the fastest software multi-pattern matching method used in Snort.
