Quality of fresh-cut tomato slices was compared during cold storage under various modified atmosphere packaging conditions. Chilling injury of slices in containers sealed with Film A was higher than with Film B; these films had oxygen transmission rates of 87.4 and 60.0 ml h-1 m-2 nun-1 at $5^{\circ}C$ and $99\%$ RH, respectively. While slices in containers with an initial atmospheric composition of air, $4\%$ CO2 + 1 or $20\%\;O_2, \;8\%\;CO_2+1$ or $20\%\;O_2$, or $12\%\; CO_2+\;20\%\;O_2$ showed fungal growth, slices in containers with $12\%\;CO_2 +\;1\%\;O_2$ did not. Low ethylene in containers enhanced chilling injury. Modified atmosphere packaging provided good quality tomato slices with a shelf-life of 2 weeks or more at $5^{\circ}C$. Experiments were conducted to compare changes in quality of slices of red tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. 'Sunbeam') fruit from plants grown using black polyethylene or hairy vetch mulches under various foliar disease management systems including: no fungicide applications (NF), a disease forecasting model (Tom-Cast), and weekly fungicide applications (WF), during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ under a modified atmosphere. Slices were analyzed for firmness, soluble solids content (SCC), titratable acidity (TA), pH, electrolyte leakage, fungi, yeasts, and chilling injury. With both NF and Tom-Cast fungicide treatments, slices from tomato fruit grown with hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) mulch were firmer than those from tomato fruit grown with black polyethylene mulch after 12 days storage. Ethylene Production of slices from fruit grown using hairy vetch mulch under Tom-Cast was about 1.5- and 5-fold higher than that of slices from WF and NF fungicide treatments after 12 days, respectively. The percentage of water-soaked areas (chilling injury) for slices from tomato fruit grown.
As am economical and effective way of antimicrobial film fabrication , antimicrobial agents were coated on the LDPE film with a binder mediu. the fabricated films were then applied tomodified atmosphere packaging of fresh strawberries. A binder of polyamide was selected for the coating medium, based on the stability in water. 1% grapefruit seed extract-coated film showed the antimicrobial activity on the plate media against EScherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, bacillus subtilis , Bacillus cereus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Micrococcus flavus, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, while one with 10% Coptis chinesis extract inhibited only M. 림편 and one coated with 10% rheum palmatum extract did not inhibit any of 10 strains tested. The packages of fresh strawberries by using antimicrobial agents-coated films created the gas compositions of O2 1.4-5.5% and CO2 5.7-7.9%, and contributed to reduced growth of total aerobic bacteria and yeast/molds on the produced. However, their lower microbial count was not correlated directly with the reduced decay of the fruits.

Low density polyethlene(LDPE0 films of 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were fabricated with addition of antimicrobial agents of Rheum palmatum extract, Coptis chinensis extract, sorbic acid and Ag-substitude inorganic zirconium matrix in 1% concentration. The films were compared in physical properties, tested in antimicrobial activity against some selected microorganisms on the agar plate medium and then applied for packaging fresh curled lettuce and cucumber to preserve their qualities. The films with Rheum palmatum extract, Coptis chinensis extract, and Ag-substituted inorganic zirconium matrix did not show any antimicrobial activity on the disk test against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Penicilluium chrysogenum, while film with sorbic acid did against E. coli, S. aureus and L. mesenteroides. The added antimicrobial agents changed the color and light transmittance of the films, but did not affect their mechanical tensile strength, heat shrinkage and wettability. For the packaged curled lettuce and cucumber stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ and 1$0^{\circ}C$, all the LDPE films impregnated with antimicrobial agents showed the reduced growth of total aerobic bacteria in the vegetables compared with control film without any additive until it reached the level around 108/g. They did not give any negative effect on other quality attributes during storage.

It was mathematically analyzed at which steps to activate TTI in the cold chain for Alaska pollack, assuming that the performance of a commercial TTI product, and Fresh-check, could not always be optimized for the pollack. Three places were selected for the TTI activation, such as on fishing ship, Busan cooperative fish market, and mart. First, the kinetic and Arrhenius temperature dependent models were experimentally built under isothermal conditions. The color index of TTI and the level of Pseudomonas spp. of pollack were measured at time intervals. Second, the resultant models were used in the mathematical calculations for dynamic temperature conditions included in the cold chain. As a result, the TTI activated at the mart place showed the best agreement between the spoilage time of the pollack and the time for the TTI color to reach its end-point. It was therefore found that it is practically important to optimally select the TTI activation place or time when using a commercial TTI product.
This study was conducted to investigate the antibacterial activity and shelf-life extension effect of iceberg lettuce packed in BN/PE film. The BN/PE film has a strong microbial suppression effect on pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, and S. typhimurium. The number of psychrophiles and mesophiles during 5 days of cold storage of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce at $10^{\circ}C$ packaged in BN/PE film was strictly suppressed in comparison with other tested films (OPP, PE, and PET film). When fresh processed iceberg lettuce was processed and stored under the current conditions, the shelf-life of the product was longer than 5 days in the BN/PE film package, whereas the shelf-life when using the other films tested, PE, OPP and PET, was no longer than 3-4 days. The decay rates of the iceberg lettuce packed in the BN/PE film was maintained at $29.8{\pm}2.1%$ on the 5th day of preservation. The samples packed in BN/PE film maintained an excellent visual quality during the 3 days of storage without significant differences in comparison with the initial visual quality. No browning was observed in the samples packed in BN/PE film for up to 3 days. The texture of shredded iceberg lettuce packaged in BN/PE film remained unchanged up to 3 days, and then a moderate decrease in texture was observed after 4 days of storage. In addition, the overall acceptability of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce packaged in BN/PE film did not change for up to 3 days, whereas the samples packaged in the other films were inedible by 3 days of storage. In conclusion, the shelf-life of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce packaged in the BN/PE film was extended to more than 5 days at $10^{\circ}C$, whereas that in the other films was 2 days at $10^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the shelf-life extension effect of the fresh-cut iceberg lettuce in BN/PE film packaging was very effective compared with the other films tested.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of microperforated film on the quality and shelf-life improvements of pork bellies during cold storage. Samples were stored for 14 days at 0$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ and 55$\pm$10% r.h.. The packaging treatments were the unpackaged sample as control, the wrapped sampled with microperforated polypropylene film(MPF) and unperforated PP film(PPF), respectively. After 10 days, the counts of all kinds of microorganisms investigated tended to be the lowest in the control samples, and followed by MPF and PPF. The 'a' value for PPF was significantly lower than the values for control and MPF at 14 day. The 'L' values for MPF measured after 10 days were significantly lower than those of PPF and higher than those for control. After 4 days of storage, the 'b' values for PPF showed significantly lower than those of MPF. As storage time elapsed, percent weight loss was the highest in the control samples followed by those from MPF and PPF. Sensory analyses showed that MPF samples tended to be evaluated higher in all parameters than the control and PPF samples after 7 days. It is concluded that microperforated film wrapping can be used efficiently for maintaining the quality of fresh pork bellies during cold storage and retail display.
The effect of packaging methods on the quality characteristics of leaf lettuces was studied during storage at low temperature. Using five commercial packaging types: non-perforated PP (polypropylene) film bags, PP film roll, perforated PP film bags, PET (polyethyleneterephthalate) trays, and micro-perforated LDPE film bags, changes in color, respiration rate, and weight loss of leaf lettuces were investigated. Packaging in non-perforated PP film bags minimized color change and weight loss during storage. The leaf lettuces packaged in non-perforated PP film bags, among the five packaging choices, showed good external appearance and offered the greatest sale potential in the domestic market. However, there were no clear differences in the respiration rates of lettuces packed in various ways. The PET tray afforded very good protection of leaf lettuces from physical damage. The results indicate that the marketability of lettuces may be directly affected by the packaging modes employed, and that the optimal packaging may be non-perforated PP film bags; these keep lettuces fresh during low-temperature storage.
Changes in the compressive strength of four typical corrugating mediums (K$_2$A, AS and S) as affected by relative humidity conditions were compared and their relative cost effectiveness was analysed. All mediums lost their compressive strength as relative humidity increased. at the relative humidity of 93% , As medium lost 58% of its initial strength while S medium did about 40%. Calculations of compress factor and compress factor by price indicated that $K_2$ medium was the most cost effective and maintained the highest compressive strength among the mediums tested. It was recommended that $K_2$ medium could be effectively used to make corrugated fiberboard especially for fresh agricultural product packaging .
Two hundred grams of fresh jujubes at whitish green maturity was packaged in the film bags of different gas permeabilities and stored at 0 and $5^{\circ}C$. Through the storage package atmosphere and jujube quality were monitored. Package of $30\;{\mu}m\;CPP$ film resulted in anaerobic conditions of $O_2$ content below 1% and $CO_2$ content above 15%, and caused off-flavor at both temperatures within 4 weeks. Package of $60\;{\mu}m\;LDPE$ film also showed potential risk of anaerobic condition development within 5 weeks, because of high $CO_2$ and/or low $O_2$ concentration at 0 and $5^{\circ}C$. Microperforated film packages could preserve quality of jujubes for 10 and 7 weeks at 0 and $5^{\circ}C$, respectively, which were significantly longer than shelf lives for perforated air pack and hermetically sealed packages.
Low density polyethylene (LDPE) films incorporated with 1% antimicrobial agents of Rheum palmatum extract, Coptis chinensis extract, and Ag-substituted inorganic zirconium matrix, were applied to modified atmosphere packaging of 200 g fresh strawberries. Plain LDPE film package, PVC wrap and perforative pinhole package of the film impregnated with 1% Rheum palmatum extract were also constructed for comparative purpose. All the packages were stored for 13 days at $5^{\circ}C$ and measured in package atmosphere, microbial count and quality attributes of the strawberry fruits. The antimicrobial LDPE films retarded the growth in total aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeast on the fruits, and resulted in significantly lower decay. The degrees of reduced microbial growth and fruit decay in the antimicrobial film packages were more pronounced, when applied by hermetical sealing to produce the modified atmospheres of low $O_2$ (<4.0%) and $CO_2$ concentrations with $6.3{\sim}9.0%$. The hermetically sealed packages of antimicrobial LDPE films also showed better retention of fruit firmness and did not give any negative effect on the physical and chemical qualities of strawberries.
