In order to investigate the interface debonding defects detection mechanism between steel tube and concrete core of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs), multi-physical fields coupling finite element models constituted of a surface mounted Piezoceramic Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) actuator, an embedded PZT sensor and a circular cross section of CFST column are established. The stress wave initiation and propagation induced by the PZT actuator under sinusoidal and sweep frequency excitations are simulated with a two dimensional (2D) plain strain analysis and the difference of stress wave fields close to the interface debonding defect and within the cross section of the CFST members without and with debonding defects are compared in time domain. The linearity and stability of the embedded PZT response under sinusoidal signals with different frequencies and amplitudes are validated. The relationship between the amplitudes of stress wave and the measurement distances in a healthy CFST cross section is also studied. Meanwhile, the responses of PZT sensor under both sinusoidal and sweep frequency excitations are compared and the influence of debonding defect depth and length on the output voltage is also illustrated. The results show the output voltage signal amplitude and head wave arriving time are affected significantly by debonding defects. Moreover, the measurement of PZT sensor is sensitive to the initiation of interface debonding defects. Furthermore, wavelet packet analysis on the voltage signal under sweep frequency excitations is carried out and a normalized wavelet packet energy index (NWPEI) is defined to identify the interfacial debonding. The value of NWPEI attenuates with the increase in the dimension of debonding defects. The results help understand the debonding defects detection mechanism for circular CFST members with PZT technique.
Ultrasonic fiber sensor is more cost-effective than optical fiber sensor using light. However, optical fiber lines are separately used for sensing. Thus, if it is applied for huge system, it is need many lines of the sensor systems. To overcome this point, novel ultrasonic sensor systems considering wave cancellation and modulation were newly developed. By using this schema, reference-free sensor system can be developed. By using ultrasonic waves of different excitation frequencies, multiple input-signal output sensor system was also developed by applying spectrum analyses. Using the array type sensor system, the leakage of liquid and its evaporation can be monitored successfully.
This research aims at designing a diaphragm made of SUS316L stainless steel for ultra high pressure sensors and evaluating its performance with a PZT driven deformation tester instead of high pressure chamber testing up to 100 MPa. Finite element method analysis indicates that the optimum thickness of a flat diaphragm is 1.5 mm not only to secure safety of sensors up to 100 MPa but also to enhance displacement measuring sensitivity. For this thickness, the maximum displacement at the center of the diaphragm is $5.3{\mu}m$. The PZT actuator must offer a force of 1,669 N to create a pressure of 100 MPa at the diaphragm surface in order to obtain a displacement of $5.3{\mu}m$. The performance evaluation by the PZT driven tester demonstrates nearly the same results as the same results as the sensors tested in the ultra high pressure chamber.
In this study, parametric analyses on a hoop-type PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) interface are performed to estimate the effects of the PZT interface's materials and geometries on sensitivities of impedance responses under strand breakage. The paper provides a guideline for installing the PZT interface suitable in tendon anchorages for damage-sensitive impedance signatures. Firstly, the concept of the PZT interface-based impedance monitoring technique in prestressed tendon anchorage is briefly described. A FE (finite element) analysis is conducted on a multi-strands anchorage equipped with a hoop-type PZT interface for analyzing materials and geometric effects. Various material properties, geometric sizes of the interface, and PZT sensor are simulated under two states of prestressing force for acquiring impedance responses. Changes in impedance signals are statistically quantified to analyze the effect of these factors on damage-sensitive impedance monitoring in the tendon anchorage. Finally, experimental analyses are performed to demonstrate the effects of materials and geometrical properties of the PZT interface on damage-sensitive impedance monitoring.

We have investigated on the development of 2-2 piezocomposites that have better piezoelectric activity and lower acoustic impedance than those of conventional piezoceramics. In this study, we have investigated the piezoelectric and acoustic properties of 2-2 piezocomposites sensor which were fabricated using dice-and-fill technique for the different volume fraction of PZT. The resonance characteristics measured by an impedance analyzer were similar to the analysis of finite element method. The resonance characteristics and the electromechanical coupling factor were the best when the volume fraction PZT was 0.6. It also showed the highest result from the standpoint of sensitivity, bandwidth and ring-down property and so on at the same condition. The specific characteristics shows that the 2-2 piezocomposites turned out to be superior to the ultrasonic sensor composed by single phase PZT.
In this study, a Lamb-wave based damage detection approach is proposed for damage localization in plate. A sensor network consisting of three PZT wafer type actuators/sensors is used to generate and detect Lamb waves. To minimize the complication resulted from the multimode and dispersive characteristics of Lamb waves, the fundamental symmetric Lamb mode, $S_0$ is selectively generated through designing the excitation frequency of the narrowband input signal. A damage localization algorithm based upon the configuration of the PZT sensor network is developed. Time-frequency analysis method is applied to purify the raw signal and extract damage features. Experimental result obtained from aluminum plate verified the proposed damage localization approach.
Vibration control of a plate using an optical fiber sensor and a PZT actuator is considered in this study. An aluminum plate with attached Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer (EFPI) and PZT actuator is prepared for experimental investigation. Vibration level of EFPI that can represent the mechanical strain without severe distortion is validated by forced vibration experiment. A numerical model of the plate is constructed based on the experimentally obtained frequency responses, and an optimal controller is designed for the multi-modal vibration suppression. It is found that the vibration level of the first three modes can be greatly reduced. The effect of low-pass filtering used to eliminate high frequency noise on the stability and control performance is also considered.
For machining systems like the motor driven linear stage which have high precision positioning with a long stroke, it is necessary to examine the repeatability of the reference position decision. Though piezo (PZT) actuator driven linear stages have high precision feed drivers and a short stroke, they have some limitations for reference position decisions if they have not been equipped with an accurate home sensor. This study was performed to examine the repeatability for home position decision of a EE-SX671 photo sensor as a home switch by using piezo actuator driven linear stages and capacitance probe.
