A Study on The Three-Phase Active Power Filter Using Voltage-Source PWM Converter (전압형 PWM 컴버터를 이용한 3상 능동 전력 필터에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes a three-phase active power filter using voltage-source PWM converter, which can eliminate the harmonics and compensate the reactive power in the ac sides of 6-pulse rectifier. The active filter consists of three-phase PWM inverter and a capacitor, and the hysteresis control technique is used to make the compensating current close to the existing harmonic current and also to improve the response of the filter with simple control circuit. As a result the compensated ac line current becomes sinusoidal and the input power factor is improved roughly to unity.

  • In this paper, a new active damping method of LCL filter without capacitor voltage sensors is proposed for 3 phase PWM Inverter. Normally, L filter or LCL filter is used as an output filter of grid connected PWM inverter. An LCL filter has more excellent performance than L filter to reduce harmonic current, so the small inductance value can be used. However, the resonance problem in LCL filter is happen due to the zero impedance by the addition of LC branch. To solve the resonance problem, the various active damping method has been proposed so far. Generally, the virtual resistor active damping methods is required to additional hardware sensors for measurement of capacitor voltage and current. In this paper, the new active damping method is proposed without any capacitor voltage or current sensors. In the proposed method, the resonance component of the capacitor voltage of LCL filter can be observed by a simple MRAS(Model Reference Adaptive System) observer without additional hardware sensors, and this component is suppressed by feedforward compensation. The validity of the proposed method is proven by simulation and experiment on the 3-phase PWM inverter system.

A Novel Active Damping Control of a Three-phase PWM Inverter with LC Filter

  • A novel control method of a three-phase PWM inverter with LC filter is proposed. The transfer function of LC filter is the same as that of 2nd order low pass filter(2nd LPF) which has a zero damping ratio. A simple method of implementing 2nd LPF with damping ratio is to add resistor to inductor or capacitor of LC filter. In an industrial application, it is not practical to adopt damping resistor because it results in losses being proportional to square of current flowing through resistor. Instead of using damping resistors, the proposed active damping control(ADC) utilizes all pass filter(APF) and considers inherent processing delay of digital controller. The overall transfer function of the proposed method is the same as a 2nd LPF and its damping ratio is also controllable via control variables. Detailed design and implementation of controller is also presented. Experiments are conducted with a 7.5kVA induction motor drive system controlled by PWM converter and inverter. Test waveforms are also presented to verify the proposed LC filter control algorithm.

  • The U filter has been generally used to filter the output voltage of PWM inverter to the sinusoidal waveform. The resonant voltage on the output voltage of PWM inverter may be generated due to LC filter. This paper proposed the algorithm to damp the resonant voltage using the virtual resistor without decreasing the efficiency by the power loss in the real resistor The method is appled to the vector controlled induction motor driven by the PWM inverter with the LC filter. The simulation results are carried out to verify the performances of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper deals with the PWM controlled active AC power filter. A new PWM control method from the viewpoint of speed and simplicity is proposed. And a microprocessor-based controller is used to realize the active AC power filter. The existing PWM control methods are primarily based on Fourier series expansion and these methods need FFT calculation and solving nonlinear harmonic equations, which are heavy burden to real-time control. The proposed method is based upon generalized pulse series expansion and needs only definite integrals of harmonic signal. So, computational effort can be reduced by a large margin. The digital circuit using 16-bit microprocessor is designed to implement the actual active power filler.

  • This paper proposes a design method of LCL-filter for a grid-connected three-phase inverter using a discontinuous PWM (DPWM) method. When using a DPWM method, many harmonic voltages are generated in the inverter output compared to a continuous PWM (CPWM) method. Therefore, an optimized grid-connected filter design is required for a DPWM method. The proposed design method provides generalized formula to design accurate LCL-filter without trial and error procedures. An inverter side inductance is designed by analyzing the current ripple injected to the grid. The Optimized parameters of LCL-filter can be designed by analyzing the total harmonic distortion (THD) and the ripple attenuation factor of the output current. The proposed LCL filter design method is demonstrated by simulation and experimental results.

  • A low-pass L-C filter has been adopted for conversion of frequency variable 3 phase PWM waveform to a grid power line and it is used for attenuation of harmonics in the VSI PWM Inverter. A optimum design of the L, C parameters was derived. The result of the study show that the inductor L seems to have a certain air gap for linear I-V characteristics and the resonant frequency of the filter must be set below the 5th harmonics of the grid power line. Further, the voltage drop in L must be within a adequate limit compared to grid power voltage.

  • In the PWM converter, PLL(Phase Locked Loop) is usually used as a tool which senses the angle of input voltage. This is sensitive to nois and needs additional hardware. In this work, we propose a sensorless control scheme of PWM converter using EKF(Extended Kalman Filter). EKF estimates a phase angle of input voltage from nonlinear state equation using measured phase currents. We control power factor and DC-link voltage utilizing the estimated phase angle. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimation algorithm through simulations.

  • This paper proposes a new filter topology that suppresses the high voltage gradient(dv/dt) in ac motor terminals. The high voltage gradient(dv/dt) causes over voltages on the motor windings, the degradation or motor insulation, and the bearing failure. Moreover surge voltage with high voltage gradient(dv/dt) in the PWM inverter red drive system where long line cables are required causes more serious problem to the motor. Thus, the most advisable method is attaching output filter to the inverter output terminals. The conventional output filters have several problems such as bulky size, difficulty or parameter tuning. The proposed filter can be relatively smaller than the conventional filters. By the proposed filter, the shaping or PWM waveform can considerably suppress high dv/dt in motor feeding cable from the inverter. The effectiveness or the proposed filter is compared with that or the conventional one and is verified by the computer simulation.

  • In this paper, a design method of LCL filter at the AC input side of a voltage source PWM converter is proposed. Effective method to prevent pollution of the utility caused by high frequency current ripple is to use a LCL filter instead of the L filter The C elements in the filter provide a low impedance path for the high frequency component, preventing them from entering the utility. A resistor in series with a capacitor is used for damping the resonance in the filter. The design examples are shown and the validity of the proposed design method is verified through the PSIM simulation.
