In this study, we develop a Korotkoff sound based automatic blood pressure measurement device including sensor, hardware, and analysis algorithm. PVDF-based sensor pattern was developed to function as a vibration sensor to detect of Korotkoff sounds, and the film's output was connected to an impedance-matching circuit. An algorithm for determining starting and ending points of the Korotkoff sounds was established, and clinical data from subjects were acquired and analyzed to find the relationship between the values obtained by the auscultatory method and from the developed device. The results from 86 out of 90 systolic measurements and 84 out of 90 diastolic measurements indicate that the developed device pass the validation criteria of the international protocol. Correlation coefficients for the values obtained by the auscultatory method and from the developed device were 0.982 and 0.980 for systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively. Blood pressure measurements based on Korotkoff sound signals obtained by using the developed PVDF film-based sensor module are accurate and highly correlated with measurements obtained by the traditional auscultatory method.

This paper presents the study on damage diagnosis of an intelligent cantilevered beams using PZT actuator and PVDF sensor This study provides the theoretical and experimental verification to examine structural damage. Time domain analysis for the non-destructive detection of damage is presented by parameterized partial differential equations and Galerkin approximation techniques. The time histories of the vibration response of structure were used to identify the presence of damage. Furthermore, this systematic approach permits one to use the piezomaterials to both excite and sense the vibration of structures. We also carried out the experimental verification about reliability of theoretical methods fur detecting the damage of a composite beam with PZT actuator and PVDF sensor. Experimental results are presented from tests on cantilevered composite beams which is damaged at different location and different dimensions. The results were compared with the simulation results. Good agreement between the results was found for the time shifts and amplitude difference in transients response of the cantilevered beam.
In this study, we fabricated and evaluated the performance of film speaker using PVDF/ZnO NP composite structure. PVDF piezoelectric films were fabricated and characterized by XRD and SEM. ZnO nanopillars were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis on prepared PVDF piezoelectric films. We analyzed and tested the acoustic signal characteristics of the piezoelectric film. In order to fabricate an acoustic structure with a wide frequency range from low to high frequency, we have fabricated various types of film speakers and investigated the frequency characteristics. As a result, the fundamental piezoelectric properties of PVDF show that the piezoelectric constant due to ZnO NP increases. And the overall acoustic signal level is also increased by 10% or more. We investigated frequency generation from 500 Hz to 10 KHz using different sizes with PVDF/ZnO NP composite film speaker.

The active vibration control of laminated composite shell has been performed with the optimized sensor/actuator system. PVDF film is used fur the material of sensor/actuator. Finite element method is utilized to model the whole structure including the piezoelectric sensor/actuator system, The distributed selective modal sensor/actuator system is established to prevent the adverse effect of spillover. In the finite element discretization process, the nine-node shell element with five nodal degrees of freedoms is used. Electrode patterns and lamination angles of sensor/actuator are optimized using genetic algorithm. Sensor is designed to minimize the observation spillover, and actuator is designed to minimize the system energy of the control modes under a given initial condition. Modal sensor/actuator profiles are optimized for the first and the second modes suppression of singly curved cantilevered composite shell structure. Discrete LQG method is used as a control law. The real time vibration control with profile optimized sensor/actuator system has been performed. Experimental result shows successful performance of the integrated structure for the active vibration control.

Patch type piezo-polymer sensors for smart structures were experimented to detect elastic wave. The pencil lead braking test was performed to analyze the characteristics of patch-type piezo-polymer sensors such as polyvinyliden fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylidene fluoride trifluorethylene (P(VDF-TrFE)) for several test specimens with various elastic wave velocities and acoustical impedances. The characteristics of the patch-type piezo-polymer sensor were compared with the commercial PZT acoustic emission (AE) sensor. The vacuum grease and epoxy resin were used as a couplant for the acoustic impedance matching between the sensor and specimen. The peak amplitude of elastic wave increased as the diameter of piezo-film and acoustical impedance of the specimen increased. The frequency detection range of the piezo-film sensors decreased with increasing diameter of the piezo-film sensor. The P(VDF-TrFE) sensor was more sensitive than the PVDF sensor.

This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of a non-collocated pair of piezopolymer PVDF sensor and piezoceramic PZT actuator, which are bonded on a cantilever beam, in order to suppress unwanted vibration at the tip of the beam. The PZT actuator patch was bonded near the clamped part and the PVDF sensor, which was triangularly shaped, was bonded on the other part of the beam. This is because the triangular PVDF sensor is known that it can detect the tip velocity of a cantilever beam. Because the arrangement of the sensor and actuator pair is not collocated and overlapped each other, the pair can avoid so called 'the in-plane coupling'. The test beam is made of aluminum with the dimension of $200\times20\times2mm$, and the two PZT5H actuators are both $20\times20\times1mm$ and bonded on the beam out-of-phase, and the PVDF sensor is $178mm\times6mm\times52{\mu}m$. Before control, the sensor-actuator frequency response function is confirmed to have a nice phase response without accumulation in a reasonable frequency range of up to 5000 Hz. Both the DVFB and displacement feedback strategies made the error signal from the tip velocity (or displacement) sensor is transmitted to a power amplifier to operate the PZT actuator (secondary source). Both the control methods attenuate the magnitude of the first two resonances in the error spectrum of about 6-7 dB.

Conventional piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) senor has high sensitivity, but it is very brittle. Recently polymer films such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and poly(vinylidene fluoridetrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymer have been used as a sensor. The advantages of polymer sensor are the flexibility and mechanical toughness. Simple process and possible several shapes are also additional advantages. Polymer sensor can be directly embedded in a structure. In this study, nondestructive damage sensitivity of single basalt fiber/epoxy composites was investigated with sensor type and thermal damage using AE and oscilloscope. And AE waveform for epoxy matrix with various damage types was compared to each other. The damage sensitivity of two polymer sensors was rather lower than that of PZT sensor. The damage sensitivity of PVDF sensor did not decrease until thermal damage temperature at $80^{\circ}C$ and they decreased significantly at $110^{\circ}C$ However, the damage sensitivity of P(VDF-TrFE) sensor at $110^{\circ}C$ was almost same in no damage sensor. For both top and side impacts, the difference in arrival time increased with increasing internal and surface damage density of epoxy matrix.
Sensor nodes in ubiquitous sensor networks require autonomous replacement of deteriorated gas sensors with reserved sensors, which has led us to develop an encapsulation technique to avoid poisoning the reserved sensors and an autonomous activation technique to replace a deteriorated sensor with a reserved sensor. Encapsulations of $In_2O_3$ nanoparticles with poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) or polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) as gas barrier layers are reported. The EVOH or PVDF films are used for an encapsulation of $In_2O_3$ as a sensing material and are effective in blocking $In_2O_3$ from contacting formaldehyde (HCHO) gas. The activation process of $In_2O_3$ by removing the EVOH through heating is effective. However, the thermal decomposition of the PVDF affects the property of the $In_2O_3$ in terms of the gas reactivity. The response of the sensor to HCHO gas after removing the EVOH is 26%, which is not significantly different with the response of 28% in a reference sample that was not treated at all. We believe that the selection of gas barrier materials for the encapsulation and activation of $In_2O_3$ should be considered because of the ill effect the byproduct of thermal decomposition has on the sensing materials and other thermal properties of the barrier materials.
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a type of electroactive polymer which shows significant shape change when exposed to electric field. PVDF is generally used as a film sensor in non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of materials. In this study, however, its properties relevant to film actuator are considered. Since most of the electromechanical applications that use PVDF and its copolymers as actuators use their piezoelectric properties, only the piezoelectric properties of PVDF are discussed here. These properties depend mainly on the degree of crystallinity of PVDF. Available data from recent research publications are used to simulate the response of a PVDF bimorph beam on the application of electric field, by a commercial finite element analysis package ANSYS. Finally, the factors that affect mechanical behavior of PVDF bimorph beam are discussed.
