  • The effect of mixing ratio on the corrosion protection of carbon steel coated by a film composed of poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was examined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Surface crystallization behavior and thermal properties of the PVDF/PMMA coated carbon steel were evaluated using polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. A Maltese cross-pattern spherulite crystal was observed in the PVDF/PMMA coating film, which became more apparent with increasing PVDF content. The highest corrosion protection performance was achieved with 60 wt.% PVDF-coated carbon steel, and delamination and corrosion reactions were observed for 20 wt.% PVDF-coated carbon steel. Further, corrosion protection performance with an amorphous/crystal mixture (PVDF/PMMA, 60/40 (w/w)) was better than those observed in the amorphous domain and the perfect-crystal domain of the PVDF/PMMA blended coating system.

  • This study examines paraelectric $Bi_{1.5}Zn_{1.0}Nb_{1.5}O_7$ (BZN), which has no hysteresis and high dielectric strength, for energy density capacitor applications. To increase the breakdown dielectric strength of the BZN film further, poly(vinylidene fluoride) BZN-PVDF composite film is fabricated by aerosol deposition. The volume ratio of each composition is calculated using dielectric constant of each composition, and we find that it was 12:88 vol% (BZN:PVDF). To modulate the structure and dielectric properties of the ferroelectric polymer PVDF, the composite film is heat-treated at $200^{\circ}C$ for 5 and 30 minutes following quenching. The amount of ${\alpha}-phase$ in the PVDF increases with an increasing annealing time, which in turn decreases the dielectric constant and dielectric loss. The breakdown dielectric strength of the BZN film increases by mixing PVDF. However, the breakdown field decreases with an increasing annealing time. The BZN-PVDF composite film has the energy density of $4.9J/cm^3$, which is larger than that of the pure BZN film of $3.6J/cm^3$.

  • This paper is concerned on method of simultaneous force(stress) and temperature sensing with PVDF film. PVDF film has piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. Therefore, it senses changes of stress and temperature. But it's output is affected with two properties. Using different medium in a sensing element, this problem is solved. Two structures induce different equations that its solutions are changes of stress and temperature. This method and result is applicable in skin sensor that has complexity of material and structure.

  • This research is the development of a skin-type tactile sensor for service robot using PVDF film for the detection of the contact state. The Prototype of the tactile sensor which has 8$\times$8 taxels was fabricated using PVDF film In the fabrication procedure of the sensor, the electrode patterns and common electrode of the thin conductive tape were attached to the both side of the 28 micro meter thickness PVDF film using conductive adhesive. The sensor was covered with polyester film for insulation and attached to the rubber base for making stable structure. The signals of a contact pressure to the tactile sensor were sensed and processed in the DSP system in which the signals were digitized and filtered. Finally, the signals were integrated for taking the force profile. The processed signals of the output of the sensor were visualized in PC, the shape and force distribution of the contact object were obtained. The reasonable performance for the detection of contact state was verified through the experiment.

  • The thermally stimulated current (TSC) of PVDF thin film prepared by physical vapor deposition method was investigated. PVDF shows three TSC peaks designated $P_1$, $P_2$ and $P_3$ in ascending order of temperature. The $P_1$ peak is associated with water in the PVDF specimen. $P_2$ and $P_3$ Peaks are specific peaks of $\alpha$ and $\beta$ type PVDF, respectively. The peak temperature was shifted to higher temperature, and peak intensity was decreased with increasing substrate temperature under thin film preparation.

  • The piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to interpret variations in structural and material properties, e.g. for structural integrity monitoring and assessment. To illustrate one of this potential benefit, PVDF film sensors are used for monitoring impact damage initiation in Gr/Ep composite panel. Both PVDF film sensors and strain gages are surface mounted to the Gr/Ep specimens. A series of impact test at various impact energy by changing impact mass and height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The sensor responses are carefully examined to predict the onset of impact damage such as matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage, etc. Test results show that the particular waveforms of sensor signals implying the damage initiation and development are detected above the damage initiation impact energy. As expected, the PVDF film sensor is found to be more sensitive to impact damage initiation event than the strain gage.

  • In this paper, the microwave irradiation process was conducted during the Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nano-composite film fabrication process to analyze how the β-crystalline is increased. TiO2 was added as a nanoparticle reinforcement to further improve the β-crystalline conformation of the PVDF films by van der Waals force due to the difference of electronegativity between PVDF and the metal oxide nanoparticle. The crystalline conformation of the fabricated films was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. According to these analysis results, it was confirmed that the microwave irradiation process during the solvent evaporation process increases the crystallinity of the PVDF films, and more β-crystalline can be obtained after additional film stretching process. It was also found that the PVDF nano-composite films with the metal oxide have relatively higher β-crystalline conformation rather than the neat PVDF films.

  • Ethyl methacrylate (EMA) monomer coupling onto the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film surface was attempted to enhance the interfacial adhesive force between PVDF-polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bilayer films via dielectric barrier corona discharge. The interfacial forces were quite enhanced when PVDF films were treated by corona discharge in an EMA 1% atmosphere. The contact angle of PVDF films decreased due to corona treatment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that the carbon and oxygen content of the PVDF film surface increased with corona discharge while the fluoride content decreased. The curve fitting of XPS $C_{1s}$ peaks revealed that the non-polar C-C bonded carbon and oxygen-bonded carbon increased gradually with corona treatment, while the fluorine-bonded carbon decreased.

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a type of electroactive polymer which shows significant shape change when exposed to electric field. PVDF is generally used as a film sensor in non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of materials. In this study, however, its properties relevant to film actuator are considered. Since most of the electromechanical applications that use PVDF and its copolymers as actuators use their piezoelectric properties, only the piezoelectric properties of PVDF are discussed here. These properties depend mainly on the degree of crystallinity of PVDF. Available data from recent research publications are used to simulate the response of a PVDF bimorph beam on the application of electric field, by a commercial finite element analysis package ANSYS. Finally, the factors that affect mechanical behavior of PVDF bimorph beam are discussed.
