  • Plasticizer and heavy metals in domestic PVC wallpaper manufactured in Korea after 2005 were analyzed to identify the contained quantity in comparison with the 2002 manufactured PVC wallpapers. Plasticizer of wallpapers was analyzed by the method KSM1991 which uses soxhlet extraction with n-hexane and GC/FID. Heavy metals were pre-treated with 0.07 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HCl) and analyzed by ICP/OES according to the EN 71-part 3 method. DEHP, DINP, DEP, acetyl tributyl citrate were identified from wallpaper. Contents of DEHP, DINP were 0.2~11.3%, 17.9~27.8% respectively in 6 wallpapers, DEP and acetyl tributyl citrate were 1.5%, 8.9% respectively in one wallpaper. Plasticizers have changed from DEHP that has possibility of hazards to DINP, DEP and acetyl tributyl citrate as compared with 2002. Heavy metals were detected under guide line from all of the wallpapers except fire-retardant wallpaper contain antimony. While PVC wallpaper was improved by use of various plasticizer, functional wallpapers such as fire-resistant wallpaper contain high antimony in this study.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause of fine wrinkles occurred in silky wallpaper and its solution. The characteristics of base papers, wallpapers and adhesives (conventional and modified) were evaluated to find the possibility for the occurrence of fine wrinkles. It was found that the base papers and wallpapers did not cause the occurrence of silky wallpaper. It was concluded that the fine wrinkles in silky wallpaper was caused by the nonuniform distribution of adhesive, the localized shrinkage of adhesive and the breaking the balance between the resistance of wallpaper and shrinkage of adhesive. Three possible solutions for the prevention of the occurrence of fine wrinkles in silky paper were recommended.

  • The toxic gases released from a fire can be classified as asphyxiants such as carbon monoxide, and irritants such as hydrochloric acid, etc. It is recognized that the combustion characteristic of interior upholstery is one of the important factors to determine the severity of indoor fires. In this study, several of the mostly used interior upholsteries including wallpaper, veneer board, curtain and floor cover, were selected to be evaluated by using the method of NES 713. The toxicity indices of the experimental samples, which indicate their toxic potentials in a fire were lowered in the order of Wallpaper (Flame Retardant) 8.5>Floor Cover(Hard) 4.8>polyurethane 4.3>Floor Cover(Soft) 3.5>PVC 2.8> Veneer Board 2.3> Floor Cover(flame retardant) 2.1>Wallpaper(Promulgation) 1.4>Curtain 0.9. It is concluded that, among all the tested upholsteries, wallpaper (flame retardant) would release the largest quantity of Toxic gases in a fire.

  • In this study, $TiO_2$ powders were prepared by hydro-thermal synthesis with titanium tetra isopropoxide. The prepared $TiO_2$ and the commercial $TiO_2$(P-25, Degussa) were by impregnating $H_2PtCl_6$ solution or the leached solution from the waste catalytic converter of automobile. Modified photocatalysts were analyzed by ICP-AES, UV-DRS, XRD, SEM. And band-gap energy of modified photo-catalyst was found to decreased to 1.76eV and basic structure was changed upon modification by leached solution. Modified photocatalysts were coated on the wallpaper after using mixed solution with adhesive materials(PVC). And then to know the modified photo catalysts tested the reactivity and quantum efficiency in the mixed gas with NO as reactants in the photo catalytic reactor. In the gas phase, photo-catalytic activity of NO was the highest for modified P-25 catalysts(P-25(w)) that P-25(w) was impregnated by leached solution of wasted catalytic converter.

  • In Korea, special education for the gifted is being activated in school systems, and many researches regarding this special education are being conducted. However, despite its rich research on the programs of this special education, there are almost no research on the institutions layout and spatial design that can utilize them. Considering the heat for education of the present and the researches on education for the gifted so far, this tendency is likely to continue. To study space composition and interior architectural design of children's institution for the gifted, we studied the cases of 5 institutions located in Seoul and the following are the results. The research results are as followed. Most institutions for the gifted used most common and technical paint, wallpaper, and PVC for finishing materials. The colors should be carefully selected, too, so that it will increase inquisitiveness and interest of the children, which will develop into creative ability. In the cases studied, color of most walls and furnitures were not very distinctive: they were in light pastel and bright tone. And there were set of desks in many shapes so it can be put in different ways for different purposes. However, there were also desks that are commonly used at schools, which were limited in arranging in various ways. Most cases studied were located in general building and therefore, natural light source was limited. On the part of appliances, supplements should be made so that classes can be carried out using multimedia materials.

  • The aim of the study was to assess the levels in typical central borough of phthalate exposure by monitoring children's facilities (19 kindergartens and 21 elementary schools) and households (17 old apartments and 22 new apartments) via sampling indoor floor dust. A vacuum cleaner specifically prepared for sampling dust was attached to a filter of a vacuum cleaner dust collecting container. During the sample preparation process, containers made of glass were used and analysis was performed using GC-MSD. The mean concentration of DEHP was $412{\mu}g/g$, DnBP was $24{\mu}g/g$, and BBzP was $10{\mu}g/g$ dust. The indoor characteristics including floor, wall materials, years after construction, water leakage history for the past three years, and ventilation were also examined to categorize phthalate esters from the dust samples. From the flooring and wallpaper materials of kindergartens and elementary schools, DEHP in the dust sample appeared at a statistically significant level (p<0.05) when PVC materials were present. DEHP in the indoor dust also increased significantly (p<0.01) during the construction period. The daily intake of DEHP measured from indoor dust was 0.08~$19.7{\mu}g/kg/day$ for children and 0.02~$1.1{\mu}g/kg/day$ for adults (women). The results clearly revealed that phthalate exposure is greater in children than in adults (women) due to the indoor dust.

  • A string wallcovering is a kind of textile wallcovering which is made of cellulose fiber yarn laminated on base paper. Compared with normal paper or PVC wallpaper, a string wallcovering is preferred continually in the interior design market, as it is not only environmentally friendly but it also has less cost on mass production without the weaving process and has a natural visual effect, excellent functionality such as thermo keeping, permeability, sound absorption. However, in the dyeing process, it is not appropriate to use plenty of energy such as water, electricity, steam or chemicals considering the environmental trend and the government policy plenty of energy such as water, electricity, steam or chemicals. Currently, a string wallcovering is made of raw white yarn and padding with direct dye or pigment which includes toxic elements, especially the use of direct dye is restricted in a part of the developed country due to inclusion of azo. In this study, we researched dyeing based on cold pad batch dyeing of a string wallcovering with reactive dyestuff. The peel strength and bending depth test confirmed that the optimum adhesive type and spread amount improved the water resistance of the string wallcovering. Also, pad batch dyeing with optimum reactive dyestuff enhanced the color fastness to light and rubbing in dry and wet conditions. Additionally, for improvement of color fastness to rubbing in a wet condition, the additional treatment finishing without soaping process which is used water. The results of this study can be used as basic data for environmentally friendly and energy saving of the textile wallcovering.
