  • SHCCs (Strain Hardening Cement Composites) show the high energy tolerance capacity due to the interfacial bonding of the fibers to the cement matrix. For effective material design and application of SHCCs, it is needed to investigate the compression, four-point bending, direct tensile response of SHCCs with different types of fibers and water-cement ratio. For these purposes, three kinds of fibers were used: PP(polypropylene, 2.0%), PVA(Polyvinyl alcohol, 2.0%), PE (Polyethylene, 1.0%). Also, effects of water-cement ratio(0.45, 0.60) on the SHCCs were evaluated in this paper. As the result of test, SHCCs with PVA and PE fiber were showed better overall behavior than specimens with PP fibers on bending and direct tensile test. Also, for the same type of fiber, SHCCs with water-cement ratio of 0.45 exhibited higher ultimate strength than specimen with water-cement ratio of 0.60 on compression strength, and showed the multiple cracking on bending and direct tensile test. Therefore, to improve of workability and dispersibility of SHCCs on water-cement ratio of 0.60, continual studies were needed.

  • The characteristics of tensile strength of fiber-reinforced grouting (cement paste) injected into rocks or soils were studied. A tensile strength of such materials utilized in civil engineering has been commonly tested by an indirect splitting tensile test (Brazilian test). In this study, a direct tensile testing method was developed with built-in cylinder inside a cylindrical specimen with 15 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height. The testing specimen was prepared with 0%, 0.5%, or 1% (by weight) of a PVA or steel fiber reinforced mortar. A specimen with 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height was also prepared and tested for the splitting tensile test. Each specimen was air cured for 7 days or 28 days before testing. The tensile strength of built-in cylinder test showed 96%-290% higher than that of splitting tensile test. The 3D finite element analyses on these tensile tests showed that the tensile strength from built-in cylinder test had was 3 times higher than that of splitting tensile test. It is similar to experimental result. As an amount of fiber increased from 0% to 1%, its tensile strength increased by 119%-190% or 23%-131% for 7 days or 28 days-cured specimens, respectively. As a curing period increased from 7 days to 28 days, its strength decreased. Most specimens reinforced with PVA fiber showed tensile strength 14%-38% higher than that of steel fiber reinforced specimens.

  • The need to consider torsion in the design of members of a structure has recently been increasing; therefore, many studies on torsion have been carried out. Recent research was focused on the torsional performance of concrete according to the reinforcing materials used. Of particular interest, are torsion studies of beams made of SFRC(steel fiber reinforced concrete), and there has been increasing use of SFRC at construction sites. In contrast, research on the composite PVA-ECC (polyvinyl alcohol-engineered cementitious composite) has only covered its mechanical performance, though it exhibits excellent tensile-strain performance (better than SFRC). Therefore, research on the torsion of concrete beams retrofitted using PVA-ECC is lacking. In this study, the behavior characteristics and performance of reinforced-concrete beams retrofitted by PVA-ECC was investigated experimentally. The experimental results show that the resistance to torsional cracking is increased by PVA-ECC. In addition, the strain on the rebar of the specimen was found to be reduced.

  • This paper discusses how steel cord and PVA hybrid fibers enhance the performance of high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (HPRFCC) in terms of elastic limit, strain hardening response and post peak of the composites. The effect of microfiber(PVA) blending ratio is presented. For this purpose flexure, direct tension and split tension tests were conducted. It was found that HFRCC specimen shows multiple cracking in the area subjected to the greatest bending tensile stress. Uniaxial tensile test confirms the range of tensile strain capacity from 0.5 to $1.5\%$ when hybrid fiber is used. The cyclic loading test results identified a unique unloading and reloading response for this ductile composite. Cyclic loading in tension appears not to affect the tensile response of the material if the uniaxial compressive strength during loading is not exceeded.

  • HPFRCCs(High performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites) exhibit characteristics of strain harding and multiple crack. These lead to improvement in ductility, toughness, and deformation capacity under compressive and tensile stress. These properties of HPFRCCs are affected by type of fiber, size of sand. Furthermore these influence compress strength and flexural strength. Therefore experimental study on the mechanical properties of HPFRCCs using PVA fiber was carried out. In this paper, HPFRCCs made of PVA fiber were tested with size of sand, strength of concrete to evaluate characteristics of compressive strength and flexural strength.

  • In this study, the effect of metakaoline and silica fume on the bond performances of structural polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber in cement mortar, including bond strength, interface toughness, and microstructure analysis are presented. Metakaoline and silica fume contents ranging from 0 % to 15 % are used in the mix proportions. Pullout tests are conducted to measure the bond performance of PVA fiber from cement mortar. Test results showed the incorporation of metakaoline and silica fume can effectively enhance the PVA fiber-cement mortar interfacial properties. Bond strength and interface toughness increased with metakaoline and silica fume content up to 10 % in cement mortar and decreased when the metakaoline and silica fume content reached 15 %. The microstructural observation confirms the findings on the interface bond mechanism drawn from the fiber pullout test results.
