Obstacle avoidance using Vector Field Histogram in simulation (Vector Field Histogram를 이용한 장애물 회피 시뮬레이션)

  • The vector field histogram(VFH) uses a two-dimensional Cartesian histogram grid as a world model. The VFH method subsequently employs a two-stage data-reduction process in order to compute the desired control commands for the vehicle. In the first stage the histogram grid is reduced to a one dimensional polar histogram that is constructed around the robot's momentary location. Each sector in the polar histogram contains a value representing the polar obstacle density in that direction. In the second stage, the algorithm selects the most suitable sector from among all polar histogram sectors with a low polar obstacle density, and the steering of the robot is aligned with that direction. Modification of Polar Echo Kernel for Performance Improvement of Audio Watermarking

  • In this paper, we present a new echo kernel, which is a modification of polar echo kernel. to improve the detection performance and robustness against attacks. Polar echo kernel may take advantage of large detection margin from the polarity of inserted echo signal, but its poor frequency response in low frequency band degrades sound quality. To solve this problem, we applied bipolar echo pulses to the polar echo kernel. Using the proposed echo kernel the distributions of autocepstrum peaks fur data ‘0’ and ‘1’ are located more distant and improvement of detection performance is achieved. It also makes the low frequency band flat so that the timbre difference in the polar echo kernel can be removed to reproduce the imperceptible sound qualify. Informal listening tests as well as robustness test against attacks were performed to evaluate the proposed echo kernel. Experimental results demonstrated the superiority of the proposed echo kernel to both conventional unipolar and polar echo kernels

An Efficient Method to Prepare PCR Cloning Vectors

  • An improved procedure for preparing PCR cloning vectors was developed. This procedure includes the incorporation of adapters to create XcmI restriction enzyme sites in pBluescript II SK(+) vectors, digestion with XcmI followed by further digestion of the small fragment produced by XcmI digestion with additional enzymes, and purification with PCR purification kits. Using this procedure, PCR cloning vectors with high ligation efficiencies and low blue or false-positive colonies were obtained.

Spatial Variation of the Polar Front in relation to the Tsushima Warm Current in the East Sea (동해에서 쓰시마난류의 변동과 관련한 극전선의 공간적 변화)

  • Variation of the polar front in the East Sea is studied using temperature and dissolved oxygen data obtained from Japan Meteorological Agency from 1972 to 1999. Variation of the polar front in the East Sea has a close relation to the variation of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC). When the TWC spreads widely in the East Sea, polar front moves northward. The spatial variation of the polar front is greater in the southwestern area of the East Sea and the northern area of Tsugaru Strait where the variation of the TWC's distribution area is greater than those in others of the East Sea. Hence, in the southeastern area of the East Sea, that is, between near Noto peninsula and Tsugaru Strait, the spatial variation of the polar front is not so wide as in the southwestern area because the flow of TWC is stable.

  • Organisms constituting a large proportion of marine ecosystems, ranging from bacteria to fish, exhibit fluorescence and bioluminescence. A variety of marine organisms utilize these biochemically generated light sources for feeding, reproduction, communication, and defense. Since the discovery of green fluorescent protein and the luciferin-luciferase system more than a century ago, numerous studies have been conducted to characterize their function and regulatory mechanism. The unique properties of fluorescent and bioluminescent proteins offer great potential for their use in a broad range of applications. This short review briefly describes the functions and characteristics of fluorescent and bioluminescent proteins, in addition to summarizing the recent status of their applications.

  • As global warming continues, the rate of ice melting in polar regions is increasing rapidly. The interest related to north polar route is increasing among not only countries near Arctic ocean but also the other countries, In the past, the classification society rule related to a design and operation of ship operating in polar area has been primarily amended by Russia, Norway and Finland located near Artic area. However recently International Maritime Organization decided to legislate the Polar Code to ensure safety of a ship operating in Arctic and Antarctic Ocean, and it is scheduled to be completed until 2014. The present paper focuses on the survey of the current enactment trends of Polar Code and suggests the confrontational strategy in related organization.

Observations of the Polar Ionosphere by the Vertical Incidence Pulsed Ionospheric Radar at Jang Bogo Station, Antarctica

  • Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) installed an ionospheric sounding radar system called Vertical Incidence Pulsed Ionospheric Radar (VIPIR) at Jang Bogo Station (JBS) in 2015 in order to routinely monitor the state of the ionosphere in the auroral oval and polar cap regions. Since 2017, after two-year test operation, it has been continuously operated to produce various ionospheric parameters. In this article, we will introduce the characteristics of the JBS-VIPIR observations and possible applications of the data for the study on the polar ionosphere. The JBS-VIPIR utilizes a log periodic transmit antenna that transmits 0.5-25 MHz radio waves, and a receiving array of 8 dipole antennas. It is operated in the Dynasonde B-mode pulse scheme and utilizes the 3-D inversion program, called NeXtYZ, for the data acquisition and processing, instead of the conventional 1-D inversion procedure as used in the most of digisonde observations. The JBS-VIPIR outputs include the height profiles of the electron density, ionospheric tilts, and ion drifts with a 2-minute temporal resolution in the bottomside ionosphere. With these observations, possible research applications will be briefly described in combination with other observations for the aurora, the neutral atmosphere and the magnetosphere simultaneously conducted at JBS.

Trends in Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Change Near the Korean Peninsula for the Past 130 Years (지난 130년 간 한반도 근해의 표층 수온 변화 경향)

  • This study examined the change in sea surface temperature (SST) around the Korean peninsula since industrialization at year 1880, and its possible causes using observation based data from the Hadley Center, the Goddard Institute of Space Studies, and National Climate Data Center. Since year 1880, There have been multi-decadal fluctuations with a gradual reduction from 1880 to around 1940, and from 1950-1980. There has then been a marked increase from 1940-1950, and from 1980 to the present. The ocean surface warming is larger during the boreal winter than summer, and greater in the south. The multi-decadal SST fluctuations around the Korean Peninsula are largely consistent with the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), which fluctuates with periods of about 20-50 years. Secondly, the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), whose long period component moves along with the PDO, appears to influence the SST near the Korean Peninsula, especially in recent decades. Overall, the SST around the Korean Peninsula has warmed since year 1880 by about $1^{\circ}C$, which is about twice the global-mean ocean surface warming. This long-term warming is aligned with an increase in greenhouse gas concentration, as well as local factors such as the PDO.
