The role of Purkinje cell-derived VEGF in cerebellar astrogliosis in Niemann-Pick type C mice

  • Niemann-Pick type C disease (NP-C) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder caused by a deficiency of NPC1 gene function, which leads to severe neuroinflammation such as astrogliosis. While reports demonstrating neuroinflammation are prevalent in NP-C, information about the onset and progression of cerebellar astrogliosis in this disorder is lacking. Using gene targeting, we generated vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) conditional null mutant mice. Deletion of VEGF in cerebellar Purkinje neurons (PNs) led to a significant increase of astrogliosis in the brain of NP-C mice in addition to the loss of PNs, suggesting PN-derived VEGF as an important factor in NP-C pathology. Moreover, replenishment of VEGF in neurons improved brain pathology in NP-C mice. Overall, our data provide a new pathological perspective on cerebellar astrogliosis in NP-C and suggest the importance of VEGF as a therapeutic target for this disease.

가미형개연교탕으로 치료한 부비동염 치험 1례 (A case of Sinusitis Patient Improved by Kami-Hyunggyeyungyotang)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of oriental medical treatment on a sinusitis patient Methods : We treated a 56-years old man patient with sinusitis. His symptoms are Ozena, Postnasal drip, Cough, sputum, nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea and Headache. The patient was treated with herb-med(Kami-Hyunggyeyungyotang,加味荊芥連翹湯), acupuncture, aroma oil therapy. During about a month, the patient was treated only with oriental medical treatment and without any of western medicine including antibiotics. We confirmed the progress of treatment with subjective symptoms, physical examination and radiographic inspection(PNS image). Results & Conclusions : After one month, Combined application of the oriental treatment including Kami-Hyunggyeyungyotang showed remarkable effects on subjective symptoms, physical examination and radiographic inspection(PNS image). This study show that Kami-Hyunggyeyungyotang effects on sinusitis.

외상 후 후각이상에 대한 방사선학적 진단 (Radiological Diagnosis for Posttraumatic Olfactory Dysfunction)

  • Objective : To evaluate objectively the sites of injury in patients with posttraumatic olfactory deficits and to suggest the diagnostic procedure for evaluation of posttraumatic anosmia. Methods : Ten patients with posttraumatic olfactory dysfunction were examined by means of olfactory testing, sinoscopy, contrast filled paranasal sinus computed tomography(contrast filled PNS CT) and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI). Five normal persons without olfactory dysfunction were also evauluated. The aerodynamic patency of olfactory cleft was examined by contrast filled PNS CT. The olfactory system(oflactory bulbs, olfactory tracts, inferior frontal region, hippocampi, or temporal lobes) was investigated in detail with MRI. The difference in the size of the olfactory bulb between normal volunteers and anosmic patients was evaluated by Student's t test. Results : Contrast filled dynamic CT scan was useful method for the evaluation of dynamic patency of the olfactory cleft. Paranasal CT scan of the all anosmic patients showed dynamic reflux of contrast media in olfactory cleft on valsalva maneuver. For the largest cross-sectional area and great height, the difference in olfactory bulb size between normal volunteers and patients was statistically significant(p<0.001) in MRI study. Conclusion : Posttraumatic anosmia was completely evaluated by olfactory testing, sinoscopy, and contrast filled CT scan for differentiation between conductive type and neurogenic type. Neurogenic anosmia was confirmed by perfect localization with MRI study.

6 MV 광자선의 투과성필터와 Wedge 선속을 이용한 부비강의 균등선량계획 (Homogeneous Dose Planning to Paranasal Sinus with the Partial Attenuation filters and Wedged Beams in 6 MV Photon Beam)

  • The homogeneous dose planning is one of the most important roles in radiation therapy. But, it is not easy to obtain a homogeneous dose to paranasal sinus region including the ethmoidal sinus with conventional irradiation techniques. In this experimental study, the authors tried to get a homogeneous dose at PNS region, but the nasal cartirage does not exceed the tolerance dose, with anterior-posterior beam and two both lateral wedged beams. Used three fields were shielded with full thickness of blocks to preserve the eye-balls and with blocks of one half value layer to create a homogeneous dose at the whole treatment volume. The dose computations are based on the three dimensonal structure with modified scatter contributions of partial shielders and attenuated beams in 6 MV photon beams. The dose distributions of mid-plane is examined with Kodak verification films and teflon-embedded TLD rod (1 mm diameter and 6 mm length) to confirm the computed dose. In our study, the whole PNS regions have shown within $85{\%}$ of the resultant isodose curves with relatively homogeneous dose distribution. The results of dose computation and measurements are agree well within $5{\%}$ uncertainties.

Genetically Optimized Hybrid Fuzzy Set-based Polynomial Neural Networks with Polynomial and Fuzzy Polynomial Neurons

  • We investigatea new fuzzy-neural networks-Hybrid Fuzzy set based polynomial Neural Networks (HFSPNN). These networks consist of genetically optimized multi-layer with two kinds of heterogeneous neurons thatare fuzzy set based polynomial neurons (FSPNs) and polynomial neurons (PNs). We have developed a comprehensive design methodology to determine the optimal structure of networks dynamically. The augmented genetically optimized HFSPNN (namely gHFSPNN) results in a structurally optimized structure and comes with a higher level of flexibility in comparison to the one we encounter in the conventional HFPNN. The GA-based design procedure being applied at each layer of gHFSPNN leads to the selection leads to the selection of preferred nodes (FSPNs or PNs) available within the HFSPNN. In the sequel, the structural optimization is realized via GAs, whereas the ensuing detailed parametric optimization is carried out in the setting of a standard least square method-based learning. The performance of the gHFSPNN is quantified through experimentation where we use a number of modeling benchmarks synthetic and experimental data already experimented with in fuzzy or neurofuzzy modeling.

Mature and Bi-Sexual Phase Gonad Occurrence in Cultured Red Spotted Grouper, Epinephelus akaara

  • This study reports the presence of mature and bi-sexual phase gonads in red spotted grouper, Epinephelus akaara after less than a year of cultivation in a commercial indoor tank and a net cage. In December 2018, juveniles were placed in an indoor tank and cultured for five months. In June 2019, the fish were transferred to a net cage and cultured until September. The rearing temperatures ranged from 19.86℃-24.65℃ in the indoor tank and 21.86℃-27.65℃ in the net cage. During the net cage culture period, specimens were randomly selected for histological gonad examination. The highest gonadosomatic index (GSI) value was measured in July (3.38±2.53), and dramatically decreased in August (0.44±0.21) and September (0.42±0.30). In July, some mature fish showed signs of vitellogenic stage oocyte development (vitellogenic and oil droplet stage oocytes), but immature fish were in an early developmental stage containing peri-nucleolus stage (PNS) oocytes. Bi-sexual phase gonads containing spermatocytes and spermatids were observed in the lumen and several PNS oocytes. By August and September, most specimens showed early-stage ovary development. However, mature testis (in August) and bi-sexual phase gonads (in September) were also observed. These results provide evidence for early puberty and hermaphroditism in the red spotted grouper.

Inhibitory Effect of Panax notoginseng on Nitric Oxide Synthase, Cyclo-oxygenase-2 and Neutrophil Functions

  • Our preliminary aim is to elucidate the pharmacokinetic features of the PNS(Panax notoginseng Buck F.H. Chen. (Arialiaceae) root). First, we assessed the prevention of neurtrophil functions. A Panax notoginseng inhibited neutrophil functions, including degranulation, superoxide generation, and leukotriene B4 production, without any effect on 5-lipoxygenase activity. This Panax notoginseng reduced nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 production in mouse peritoneal macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, whereas no influence on the activity of inducible NO synthase, cyclo-oxygenase-2 or cyclo-oxygenase-1 was observed. Panax notoginseng significantly reduced mouse paw oedema induced by carrageenan. The results indicate that Panax notoginseng exerts anti-inflammatory effects related to the inhibition of neutrophil functions and of NO and prostaglandin E2 production, which could be due to a decreased expression of inducible NO synthase and cyclo-oxygenase-2.

Predicted of hydration heat and compressive strength of limestone cement mortar with different type of superplasticizer

  • The use of some superplasticizers in the production of mortar or concrete influences the hydration kinetic and the amount of total heat. This results in a modification of some properties, namely mortar workability, mechanical strength and durability. Three superplasticizers were used; a polynaphthalenesulfonate (PNS), a melamine resin (PMS) and a polycarboxylate (PC). They have been incorporated into various amount in a standardized mortar based on limestone cement. The aim of this study was to evaluate the rheological, mechanical and Calorimeters properties of this mortar. This will select the most compatible product and more able to be used depending on the climate of the country and the cement used. The PNS is incompatible with this type of cement registering a decrease of strength but the PMS and the PC modify the kinetics of hydration with significant heat generation and improved mechanical strength. The measured heat flow is significantly influenced by the type and dosage of superplasticizer especially for low dosage. Hydration heat and compressive strength of the different mixtures can be evaluated by determining their ultimate values and ages to reach these values where the correlation coefficients are very satisfactory.

드러밍 운동이 과체중 여성의 자율신경계에 미치는 영향 (Effects of drumming exercise on the autonomic nervous system in overweight women)

  • 이 연구는 성인 여성을 대상으로 체질량지수와 드러밍 운동이 자율신경계에 미치는 영향을 규명하는데 목적이 있다. 30-50대의 성인 여성10명을 체질량지수가 정상인 집단(Low BMI, LBMI <23kg/m2)과 과체중 이상인 집단(High BMI, HBMI>23kg/m2)으로 나누어 드러밍 운동을 실시하였다. 드러밍 운동은 1회 50분, 주 3회, 8주간 실시하였으며, 운동 전후 신체조성과 심박변이도를 측정하였다. 심박변이도는 선형분석인 시간 영역 분석과 주파수 영역 분석을 통해 SDNN(Standard Deviation of NN interval), RMSSD(Root Mean Square of the Successive Differences), HF(High Frequency), LF(Low Frequency), TP(Total Power)를 측정하였다. 비선형분석인 푸앵카레 플롯(Poincaré plot)을 통해 SD1(Standard Deviation of the distance of each point from the y = x axis), SD2(Standard Deviation of each point from the y = x + average R-R interval), SD2/SD1을 측정하였다. 자율신경계 지수로 부교감신경계지수(Parasympathetic Nervous System Index; PNS Index)와 교감신경계지수(Sympathetic Nervous System; SNS Index)를 측정하였다. 연구 결과, 운동 전 심박변이도에서 HBMI 집단과 LBMI 집단 간에는 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 그러나, 8주간의 드러밍 운동 후에는 HBMI 집단이 LBMI 집단에 비해 체중(p=0.034), 체질량지수(p=0.044), 체지방량(p=0.032), 허리둘레(p=0.013)에서 유의한 상호작용 효과가 나타났다. 심박변이도에서 HBMI 집단은 LBMI 집단에 비해 선형 분석에서 RMSSD(p=0.018)와 TP(p=0.033), 비선형분석에서는 SD1(p=0.018), 자율신경계지수에서는 PNS Index(p=0.040)가 유의하게 증가하였다. RMSSD, SD1 및 PNS Index는 부교감신경계의 활동을 나타내는 지표이다. 결론적으로 8주간의 드러밍 운동이 과체중 이상 여성의 자율신경계 중 부교감신경계의 개선에 긍정적인 효과를 미치는 것으로 확인되었다.

코곁굴 두정비극방향 검사 시 안와이공선과 아래턱뼈 몸통각도의 상관관계를 이용한 새로운 자세잡이 기준에 관한 연구 (A Study of the New Positioning Guide Based on the Correlation between the Orbit Meatus Line and Mandibular Body Angle in Paranasal Sinus Parietoacanthial Projection(Water's Method))

  • 본 연구에서는 한국인의 두개골 측방향 방사선 검사 영상을 통해 안와이공선(OML)과 아래턱뼈 몸통(Body of mandible) 각도 간의 상관관계를 알아보고, 임상에서 PNS Water's view 검사 시 자세 잡이의 용이성과 정형화된 영상 구현을 위한 검사 자세에 대한 새로운 기준을 제시하고자 한다. 상급종합병원 방사선 검사실에 내원한 환자 중 두개부 측방향 방사선 검사를 시행한 총 202명의 영상과 두부 팬텀을 대상으로 진행하였고, X선 발생 장치와 EOS 장비를 사용하여 두부 팬텀 영상을 획득하였다. 본 연구는 PACS를 이용하여 환자의 두개부 측방향 영상에서 OML과 아래턱뼈몸통 각에 관련된 약어를 설정하여 턱뼈 가지 각(RIA), 정확한 OML 각(TIA), OML과 IR의 각(OIA), 아래턱뼈 길이(TML), 턱뼈 가지 높이(RH), 턱 끝점, 턱뼈 각점, 관절 돌기점이 이루는 각(MA)을 측정하였고, 두부 팬텀을 이용하여 유효성을 확인했다. RIA의 연령별 평균값 범위는 22.67~26.04°이었고, 남성은 23.14°, 여성은 24.78°로 측정되었다. 연령에 따른 TIA와 OIA의 평균값 범위는 35.98~38.31°와 72.27~75.25°이었고, 남성은 36.74°와 72.73°, 여성은 36.43°와 73.38°로 나타났다. TML과 RH의 연령별 크기는 85.73~89.60 mm와 62.60~70.87 mm의 범위로 나타났고, 남성과 여성의 값은 각각 90.54 mm 70.78 mm와 85.13 mm, 61.54 mm이었다. MA의 연령별 평균값의 범위는 55.95~58.63°이었으며, 남성은 57.96°, 여성은 57.76°이었다. 각 변수 간 상관관계 분석 결과 RIA와 OIA, TIA는 양의 상관관계를 나타내었다. 본 연구 결과, 아래턱뼈몸통 각과 OML 과의 관계가 양의 상관성을 나타내는 것으로 보아 아래턱뼈를 영상 수용체에 수직으로 조정하는 방법을 적용한다면 PNS Water's 검사 시 보다 정확한 영상 구현에 도움이 될 것으로 사료되며, 새로운 자세 잡이를 위한 기준으로 활용가치가 있다고 생각된다.
