Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles, denture base resin, were synthesized by suspension polymerization through control of polymerization conditions (stabilizer concentration, co-monomer concentration, and the agitation speed) and evaluated changes in molecular weight and particle size. We also investigated their mechanical properties of compression-molded samples which were from synthesized polymer powder mixed with methyl methacrylate (MMA) solution. under the condition of volumetric ratio as 2:1(PMMA powder and MMA solution). The results shows that the mechanical properties were mainly affected by particle size over 100 ${\mu}$m (in particle size) and by molecular weight under 100 ${\mu}$m (in particle size). From these results, we concluded that the most appropriate particle size of PMMA powder for heat-cured denture base resins is around 100 ${\mu}$m. and its molecular weight is around 300000 (M$\sub$n/).
In general, the three major oral functions of edentulous patients-mastication, phonation, esthetics-can be rehabilitated by the complete dentures, and both the resin based complete denture and the metal based complete denture are commonly used by many clinicians today. For the sake of many advantages such as the excellent thermal conductivity, low volumetric change, high strength, low risk of fracture and the better patient's adaptation, the metal based complete dentures are indicated to the several cases. But, there are common failures of these type of dentures mainly by the fracture or the debonding between the resin structures and the metal frameworks which is caused by the discrepancies of the flexural strength and the coefficient of thermal expansion. This is aggravated by the water contamination of the interface when exposed to the oral environment and results in the failure of complete denture treatment. So, the purpose of this study is to compare the bond strength and the fracture patterns of the gold alloy based and the Co-Cr alloy based complete dentures using the PMMA resins and the 4-META adhesive resins. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Both to the PMMA resin and the 4-META resin, the flexural bond strength of gold alloy is lower than that of Co-Cr alloy(P<0.05) 2. To the Co-Cr alloy, the bond strength of the 4-META resin is significantly higher than that of PMMA resin(P<0.05). 3. The flexural strength of the group with the mechanical retention form is significantly higher than that of the group without retention form(P<0.05). 4. Comparing with the other groups, the fracture patterns of the group 3 are quite different from the group 1,2,5.
Purpose: We compare the bond strength of heat-cured PMMA of Lucitone 199 and QC-20 and Tokuyama Rebase Resin of self-cured resin, which are widely used and well accepted in clinical practice. In order to test the mechanical bonding and chemical bonding, we will compare the bond strength between EstheShot Bright, Smiletone, Repair and Rebase resins. Methods: The denture base resin used in this study was PMMA heat-cured QC-20 and Lucitone 199, polyamide resin EstheShot Bright, Smiletone. And Two types of self-curing Rapid Repair and Tokuyama Rebase were used as resection resins. To measure the bond strength, the denture specimens were fabricated in the size of $10{\times}64{\times}3.5mm$ as instructed by the manufacturer. A surface treatment agent was applied to the cut surfaces of each denture specimen, and the specimens were placed in a preformed silicone mold, and autoclaved excimer resins were prepared. The bending strength of the fabricated specimens was measured using a universal testing machine (STM-5, United Calibration Co., U.S.A.) to measure the three-point bending strength. Results: In both polycarbonate and polyacetal resin, a special resin surface treatment agent showed higher bonding strength than the resin surface treatment agent(p<0.05). Regardless of the type of surface treatment, polycarbonate showed higher bond strength than polyacetal resin(p<0.05). Conclusion: It is considered desirable to use a special surface treating agent for the thermoplastic denture base resin such as polycarbonate and polyacetal resin.
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a self-polymerizing resin for removable orthodontic devices, has been used as a dental orthodontic device for many years because of its advantages such as color stability, volume stability, and tissue compatibility. However, such a removable orthodontic device has a disadvantage that the longer the use in the oral cavity due to the low strength of the PMMA fracture of the orthodontic device resin in use. In this study, zinc nanoparticles (ZNP) were mixed with orthodontic PMMA to introduce strength effect. Rectangular samples ($1.4{\times}3.0{\times}19.0mm$) of orthodontic PMMA (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0%) containing ZNP were prepared. The finished specimen was tested for three-point bending strength at a speed of 1 mm / min, and the Vickers hardness was measured three times using a hardness tester. The surface roughness was measured with a surface roughness. As a result, the 3-point bending strength did not change significantly (p>0.05). Surface energy increased significantly. As a result, we successfully synthesized ZNP in this study and prepared the dispersed resin specimen for calibration. It will be possible to develop high-density dental orthodontic resins.
Acrylic resin or polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is one of the most attractive materials to be used for dental appliances manufacturing. It has been introduced as a biomaterial during the last century. This study aims to evaluate the compounds absorption and release through acrylic resin to be used for drug delivery as well. The study specimens were 10 pieces of heat-cured clear acrylic resin with dimensions of 10 × 10 × 2 mm. The specimens were dipped in methylene blue solution at a powder-water ratio of 1:20 for 5 days. The samples were removed and dipped in 5 ml distilled water vials for 24 hours. Then the specimens were replaced into new 5 ml vials and the process lasted for 4 days. The extracted solutions were analyzed by the visible light spectroscopy for absorbance. The statistical results showed a gradual increase in stain release from day 1 to day 4 with a significant difference between day 1 and day 4 solutions. The study showed that PMMA resin is able to absorb and release some compounds constantly and the absorption drug-loading technique is applicable to this material.
PURPOSE. This in vitro study intended to investigate the mechanical and thermal characteristics of Valplast, and of polymethyl methacrylate denture base resin in which different esthetic fibers (E-glass, nylon 6 or nylon 6.6) were added. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Five groups were formed: control (PMMA), PMMA-E glass, PMMA-nylon 6, PMMA-nylon 6.6 and Valplast resin. For the transverse strength test the specimens were prepared in accordance with ANSI/ADA specification No.12, and for the impact test ASTM D-256 standard were used. With the intent to evaluate the properties of transverse strength, the three-point bending (n=7) test instrument (Lloyd NK5, Lloyd Instruments Ltd, Fareham Hampshire, UK) was used at 5 mm/min. A Dynatup 9250 HV (Instron, UK) device was employed for the impact strength (n=7). All of the resin samples were tested by using thermo-mechanical analysis (Shimadzu TMA 50, Shimadzu, Japan). The data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey tests for pairwise comparisons of the groups at the 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS. In all mechanical tests, the highest values were observed in Valplast group (transverse strength: $117.22{\pm}37.80$ MPa, maximum deflection: $27.55{\pm}1.48$ mm, impact strength: $0.76{\pm}0.03$ kN). Upon examining the thermo-mechanical analysis data, it was seen that the E value of the control sample was 8.08 MPa, higher than that of the all other samples. CONCLUSION. Although Valplast denture material has good mechanical strength, its elastic modulus is not high enough to meet the standard of PMMA materials.
We studied on the injection molding conditions of defect-free PMMA lens for surgical light. When the heat temperature of mold is low, more imperfect molding or weldlines and flow marks have showed. A defective lens depends on low fluidity of the PMMA resin and its temperature is high, a flexural strain has occurred. The longer cooling time of specimens, the more cracks have occurred due to resin crystallization. In this study, optimal molding conditions for defect-free PMMA lens is as follows. The heat temperature of core mold was 110 [$^{\circ}C$] and also the cooling time was 25 [sec]. PMMA materials can realized low expense to produce plastic optical lens and applications.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of thermocycling on the shear bond strength of Co-Cr alloy to denture base resin. PMMA denture base resin such as heat-cured $Vertex-RS^{(R)}$, self-cured $Vertex-SC^{(R)}$ and 4-META denture base resin such as heat-cured $Meta-Dent^{(R)}$, self-cured $Meta-Fast^{(R)}$ was bonded to Co-Cr alloy. Samples were divided into 3 groups : no thermocycling group as control, thermocycling between $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ with 15 second dwell time as group 1, thermocycling with 1 minute dwell time as group 2. The shear bond strength was measured and the interface between metal and resin was observed by SEM. The results were as follows. 1. The shear bond strength decreased significantly according to thermocycling and dwell time(P<0.001). 2. The bond strength of Co-Cr alloy and 4-META denture base resin was significantly higher than that of Co-Cr alloy and PMMA denture base resin(P<0.001) 3. In SEM, there was no gap in control group, but there was much and large gap in group 1, 2. The longer dwell times, the lower bond strength. PMMA denture base resin had more gap than 4-META denture base resin in the interface. These results revealed that thermocycling decreased the bond strength between Co-Cr alloy and denture base resin and dwell time of thermocycling changed the effect of thermocycling. The results suggested that oral temperature change affect the bond strength of prosthesis.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the fracture resistance, surface hardness, and color stain of 3D printed, CAD-CAM milled, and conventional interim materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 80 specimens were fabricated from auto polymerizing polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), bis-acryl composite resin, CAD-CAM polymethyl methacrylate resin (milled), and 3D printed composite resin (printed) (n = 20). Forty of them were crown-shaped, on which fracture strength test was performed (n = 10). The others were disc-shaped specimens (10 mm × 2 mm) and divided into two groups for surface hardness and color stainability tests before and after thermal cycling in coffee solution (n = 10). Color parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after each storage period, and color differences (CIEDE2000 [DE00]) were calculated. The distribution of variables was measured with the Kolmogorov Smirnov test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey HSD, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U tests were used in the analysis of quantitative independent data. Paired sample t-test was used in the analysis of dependent quantitative data (P < .05). RESULTS. The highest crown fracture resistance values were determined for the 3D printed composite resin (P < .05), and the lowest were observed in the bis-acryl composite resin (P < .05). Before and after thermal cycling, increase in mean hardness values were observed only in 3D printed composite resin (P < .05) and the highest ΔE00 value were observed in PMMA resin for all materials (P < .05). CONCLUSION. 3D printing and CAD-CAM milled interim materials showed better fracture strength. After the coffee thermal cycle, the highest surface hardness value was again found in 3D printing and CAD-CAM milled interim samples and the color change of the bis-acryl resin-based samples and the additive production technique was higher than the PMMA resin and CAD-CAM milled resin samples.
Purpose: This study is a mechanical strength supplementation of denture base resin Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is in general use for denture base resin of the partial and full denture, however, The polymerization process of PMMA is not stabilized. Because of compatibility problems, preceding studies were performed, which were enhancing mechanical strength(Camilo Machado 2007),(Ana M. 2008), addition filler to materials property(Ayse Mese, 2008), self curing method(Hiroshi Shimizu, 2008). Methods: The carbon fiber and polyacetal filler, reinforced the mechanical strength for improving the stability of denture base resin were supplemented to the self cured resin. The Modulus of elasticity and the restoring force were calculated by tensile test. Results: The strengths of the heat and self cured resin were respectively decreased and increased, when the filler was supplemented to the denture base resin and the modulus of elasticity of both heat and self cured resin were not increased, when the filler was supplemented to the denture base resin. Conclusion: The restoring forces of self cured resin containing 10% filler were increased, when the filler was supplemented to the denture base resin.
