Offshore oscillating water columns (OWC) represent one of the most promising forms of wave energy converters. The hydrodynamic performance of such converters heavily depends on their interactions with ocean waves; therefore, understanding these interactions is essential. In this paper, a fully nonlinear 2D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on RANS equations and VOF surface capturing scheme is implemented to carry out wave energy balance analyses for an offshore OWC. The numerical model is well validated against published physical measurements including; chamber differential air pressure, chamber water level oscillation and vertical velocity, overall wave energy extraction efficiency, reflected and transmitted waves, velocity and vorticity fields (PIV measurements). Following the successful validation work, an extensive campaign of numerical tests is performed to quantify the relevance of three design parameters, namely incoming wavelength, wave height and turbine damping to the device hydrodynamic performance and wave energy conversion process. All of the three investigated parameters show important effects on the wave-pneumatic energy conversion chain. In addition, the flow field around the chamber's front wall indicates areas of energy losses by stronger vortices generation than the rear wall.
The arteries are very important in cardiovascular system and easily adapt to varying flow and pressure conditions by enlarging or shrinking to meet the given hemodynamic demands. The blood flow in arteries is dominated by unsteady flow phenomena due to heart beating. In certain circumstances, however, unusual hemodynamic conditions cause an abnormal biological response and often induce circulatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, thrombosis and inflammation. Therefore quantitative analysis of the unsteady pulsatile flow characteristics in the arterial blood vessels plays important roles in diagnosing these circulatory diseases. In order to verify the hemodynamic characteristics, in-vivo measurements of blood flow inside the extraembryonic arterial bifurcation cascade of chicken embryo were carried out using a micro-PIV technique. To analyze the unsteady pulsatile flow temporally, the (low images of RBCs were obtained using a high-speed CMOS camera at 250fps with a spatial resolution of $30{\mu}m\times30{\mu}m$ in the whole blood vessels. In this study, the unusual flow conditions such as flow separation or secondary flow were not observed in the arterial bifurcations. However, the vorticity has large values in the inner side of curvature of vessels. In addition, the mean velocity in the arterial blood vessel was decreased and pulsating frequency obtained by FFT analysis of velocity data extracted in front of the each bifurcation was also decreased as the bifurcation cascaded.

A review on advanced flow visualization techniques is presented particularly for applications to micro scale heat and mass transport measurements. Challenges, development and applications of micro scale visualization techniques are discussed for the study of heating/evaporating thin films, a heated micro channel, and a thermopneumatic micro pump. The developed methods are (1) Molecular Tagging Fluorescence Velocimetry (MTFV) using 10-nm caged seeding molecules (2) Micro Particle Velocimetry (MPIV) and (3) Ratiometric Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) for micro-resolution thermometry. These three methods are totally non-intrusive techniques and would be useful to investigate the temperature and flow characteristics in MEMS. Each of these techniques is discussed in three-fold: (1) its operating principle and operation, (2) its application and measurement results, and (3) its future challenges.

Application of the LeMoS hybrid (LH) URANS/LES method for the wake parameters prediction is considered. The wake fraction coefficient is calculated for inland ship model M1926 under shallow water conditions and compared to results of PIV measurements. It was shown that due to lack of the resolved turbulence at the interface between LES and RANS zones the artificial grid induced separations can occur. In order to overcome this drawback, a shielding function is introduced into LH model. The new version of the model is compared to the original one, RANS $k-{\omega}$ SST and SST-IDDES models. It is demonstrated that the proposed modification is robust and capable of wake prediction with satisfactory accuracy.
The entrainment of air into spray jets has been considered. Entrainment is defined as the quantity of ambient gas that is drawn into a spray. Numerical study is performed to investigate an air entrainment into spray jets and compared with results of experiment of air entrainment. Experimental measurements were performed with PDA and PIV system. Experimental and numerical results show that the air entrainment was affected droplet size and velocity.
The present work has carried out experimental study on a cross-flow fan system with a simplified vortex wall scroll casing. A cross-flow fan test rig was constructed to obtain pressure rise and volume flow rate for various fan operating conditions. The performance estimation is using a wind tunnel with a motor driven damper for flow rate control and flows are quantitatively visualized by light scattering system with a pulsed laser. Min focus on the visualization is finding a eccentric vortex inside a fan which is a major factor reducing fan efficiency. Comprehensive engineering data are prepared for industrial applications and show a good agreement with a prior work by experimental measurements.

A 2-frame PTV (particle tracking velocimetry) system using the concept of match probability between two consequent image frames has been developed to obtain instantaneous velocity fields. The overall 2-frame PTV system including image pre-processing, tracking algorithm and post-processing routine was implemented to apply to real flows. The developed 2-frame PTV system has several advantages such as high recovery ratio of velocity vectors, low error ratio and small computational time compared with the conventional 4-frame PTV and the FFT-based cross-correlation PIV technique. The 2-frame PTV system was applied to a turbulent channel flow over a rectangular block to check its reliability and usefulness. Total 96 sequential image frames have been captured and processed to get both mean and fluctuating velocity vector fields over the recirculating region. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles were well agreed with hte LDV measurements in the separated region behind the block. Time-averaged reattachment length is about 6.3 times of the block height.
Comprehensive study on a centrifugal blower for air-purifier involving a few physical filters for percolation process has been accomplished for an optimal design of the air handling system. The filtering media causes a flow resistance for induced flows by a rotating impeller. The present methodology is to adopt PIV system for velocity measurements and wind tunnel connected with an anechoic chamber for total performance test of the blower. Trial prototypes for the blades of a rotor and casing are presented for satisfaction of both flow rate and noise level set by design objectives. Tapered blades with a special casing for a fan show good performance data. The results of velocity fields also explain the reason of improvements of the blower performance.
The phase-change transformation processes are relevant in many engineering applications. In particular, this phenomenon plays an important role in the extraction and fabrication operations in the metallurgical industry. The control of the heat transfer and fluid flow patterns is important to achieve casting quality and competitive production times. In the present study, a simple finite-element algorithm is developed for solid-liquid phase change problems. Natural convection in the liquid phase due to the temperature dependency of water density is considered by a numerical model. The predictions are compared with measurements by the particle image velocimetry(PIV). to show that the calculation results are in good agreement with the experiment results.
An experimental study was performed for measuring velocity and turbulence intensity in a circular tube for Re= 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000, with swirl and without swirling flow. The velocity fields were measured using PIV techniques and swirl motion was produced by a tangential inlet condition. Some preliminary measurements indicated that over the first 4 diameter, two regions of flow reversal were set up (the so called 2-cell structure). At the highest Reynolds numbers, the maximum values of the measured axial velocity components had moved toward the test tube wall and produce more flow reversal at the conter of the tube. As the Reynolds number increased, the turbulence intensity of swilling flow at the tube inlet also increased.
