  • Micro-PIV(particle image velocimetry) has been widely used to measure the velocity of micro flow. Although this micro-PIV method can give accurate 2D instantaneous velocity information of mea-surement plane, it cannot resolve the out of plane component of velocity vectors. Lots of the micro fluidic devices generate three-dimensional flow and 3D measurement of velocity is useful to understand the physics of micro flow phenomena. In this study, we constructed stereoscopic micro-PIV(SMPIV) system and applied this method to the impinging micro jet flow. The results show that this method can produce accu-rate 3D reconstruction of micro jet flow.

  • In this study, a Masked Omni-Directional Integration(MODI) method for pressure calculation is proposed using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) data. To obtain the velocity field, the Affine PIV method was adopted. Synthetic images were generated for a solid body rotation. Calculation on the pressure was based on the Navier-Stokes equation. The results obtained by the MODI were compared with those obtained by theoretical pressure and by the Omni-Directional Integration(ODI) method. It was shown that the minimum error by the proposed MODI method was attained when the mask size was 1.

  • The hierarchic recursive local-correlation PIV algorithm with CBC(correlation based correction) method was developed to increase the spatial resolution of PIV results and to reduce error vectors. This new algorithm was applied to the single-frame and double-frame cross-correlation PIV techniques. In order to evaluate its performance, the recursive algorithm was tested using synthetic images, PIV standard images from Visualization Society of Japan, real flows including ventilation flow inside a vehicle passenger compartment and wake behind a circular cylinder with rib let surface. As a result, most spurious vectors were suppressed by employing CBC method. In addition, the hierarchical recursive correlation algorithm improved largely the sub-pixel accuracy of PIV results by decreasing the interrogation window size, increasing spatial resolution significantly.

  • Although accurate measurement of velocity profiles, multiple velocity vectors, and shear stress in arteries is important, there is still no easy method to obtain such information in vivo. This study shows the utility of combining ultrasound contrast imaging with particle image velocimetry (PIV) for non-invasive measurement of velocity vectors. The steady flow analytical solution and optical PIV measurements (for pulsatile flow) were used for comparison. When compared to the analytical solution, both echo PIV and optical PIV resolved the steady velocity profile well. Error in shear rate as measured by echo PIV (8%) was comparable to the error of optical PIV (6.5%). In pulsatile flow, echo PIV velocity profiles agreed well with optical PIV profiles. Echo PIV followed the general profile of pulsatile shear stress across the artery but underestimated wall shear at certain time points. These studies indicate that echo PIV is a promising technique for the non-invasive measurement of velocity profiles and shear stress.

  • The present study is aimed to develop a new PIV operating software through optimization of vector tracking identification including versatile pre-processings and post-processing techniques. And the result exhibits an improved version corresponding various input and output multimedia compared to previous commercial software developed by other makers. An upgraded identification method called grey-level cross correlation coefficient method by direct calculation is suggested and related user-friendly pop-up menu are also represented. Post-processings comprising turbulence statistics are also introduced with graphic output functions.

  • It has been known that spray characteristics have an important effect on the mixture formation and directly influence the engine performances and the emissions. Up to now, the measurement of droplet size is well developed such as PDPA and PMAS though the behavior of small droplets during secondary atomization is not clear. Particle image velocimetry(PIV), a planar measuring technique, is a very efficient tool for studying complicated behavior and a fast and reliable method to track numerous droplets during injection. In this study, two-color scanning PIV is designed to obtain quasi-instantaneous two dimensional velocity data by using he-ion laser, rotating mirror and beam splitter. This PIV method which has high temporal and spatial resolution provides the information about the small complex droplet behavior.

  • Three-dimensional flow characteristics in a liquid fuel ramjet combustor were investigated using the PIV method. The combustor has two rectangular inlets that loin a 90-degree angle each other. Three cases of test combustors are made in which those inlet angles are 30 degree, 45degree and 60 degree. The experiments were performed in a water tunnel test with the same Reynolds number as Mach 0.3 at the inlet. PIV software was developed to measure the characteristics of the flow field in the combustor. Accuracy of the developed PIV program was verified with a rotating disk experiment and standard data. The characteristics of the internal flows of the combustor are large swirling flows which appear symmetric with respect to the symmetric section. This is attributed to the fact that the flows introduced from the right and left intakes collide with each other, thus forming symmetrically large vortices. A large and complex three-dimensional recirculating flow was measured behind the intakes. An inlet angle of 30 degrees is the most suitable angle as a frame he]der in the performed experimental ranges.

  • A 5-valve(intake 3-valve) engine has been developed to increase engine performance. These engines have a high power caused by the decrease of inertia mass of an intake valve and the increase of intake effective area. In this study, in-cylinder flow patterns were visualized with laser sheet method and velocity profiles at near intake valves were inspected by using a two-color PIV. In addition, steady flow tests were performed to quantify tumble ratio of flow-fields generated by a tumble control valve(TCV). Experimental results of steady flow test show that the cure of tumble ratio in intake 3-valve engine farmed as a S shape with valve lift changes. This tendency is different from the one in intake 2-valve engine. Using laser sheet method and two color PIV method, we can find that the intake flow through upper valve increases and the velocity gradient also slightly increases as valve lift increases. From this study, the in-cylinder flow characteristics around intake valves were made clearly.

  • Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry is a measurement technique to acquire of three dimensional velocity field by two cameras. With a laser sheet illumination, the third velocity component can be deduced by out-of-plane velocity components using a stereoscopic matching method. Industrial fluid flows are almost three dimensional turbulent flows, so it is necessary to use the stereoscopic PIV measurement method. However the existing stereoscopic PIV system seems hard to use since it is very expensive and complex. In this study we have developed a Stereoscopic Miniature PIV(MPIV) system based on the concept of the Miniature PIV system which we have already developed. In this paper, we address the design and some first experimental results of the stereoscopic PIV system. The Stereoscopic MPIV system features relatively modest performances, but is considerably smaller, cheaper and easy to handle. The proposed Stereoscopic MPIV system uses two one-chip-only CMOS cameras with digital output. Only two other chips are needed, one for a buffer memory and one for an interfacing logic that controls the system. Images are transferred to a personal computer (PC) via its standard parallel port. No extra hardware is required (in particular, no frame grabber board is needed).
