An experimental investigation was performed to study on the generation of air bubble and air core with swirling flow in a horizontal cicular tube. To determine some characteristics of the flow, 2D PIV technique is employed for velocity measurement in water. The experimental rig is manufactured from an acryl tube. The test tube diameter of 80mm, and a length of 3000mm. The used algorithm is the gray leve cross-correlation method(Kimura et al. 1986). An Ar-ion laser is used and the light from the laser(500mW) passes through a probe to make two-dimensional light sheet. In order to make coded images of the tracer particles on one frame, an AOM(Acoustic-Optical Modulator) is used. The maximum axial velocities showed near the test tube wall at y/D =0.1 and y/D =0.9 along the test tube. The higher Reynolds number increase, the lower axial velocities are showed in the center of the test tube. The air bubbles are generated from Re =10,000 and developed into air core from the recirculating water pump rpm equal 30Hz. The pressure and temperature are measured across the test tube at X/D=3.33.

The objective of the present study is to perform experiments for water filled cavity heated and cooled from the side at $Ra=8.5{\times}108$. This experiment can provide validation database of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model for single-phase turbulent natural convection which has been regarded as one of the important phenomena in nuclear safety. For the natural convection inside a cavity, temperature and velocity were obtained by thermometry and PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) methods. These results would be used for validation of standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model.

Birds and insects flap their wings to fly in the air and they can change their wing motions to do steering and maneuvering. Therefore, we created various wing motions with the parameters which affected flapping motion and evaluated the aerodynamic characteristics about those cases in this study. As the wing rotational velocity was fast and the rotational timing was advanced, the measured aerodynamic forces showed drastic increase near the end of stroke. The mean lift coefficient was increased until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$ and showed the maximum value of 1.0. The maximum mean lift to drag ratio took place at angle of attack of $20^{\circ}$. Flow fields were also visualized around the wing using particle image velocimetry (PIV). From the flow visualization, leading-edge vortex was not shed at mid-stroke until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$. But it was begun to shed at angle of attack of $60^{\circ}$.
In order to obtain velocity profile of blood flow with high spatial resolution, a micro PIV technique consisted of a fluorescent microscope, double-pulsed YAG laser, cooled CCD camera was applied to in-vitro blood flow experiment through a micro round tube of a diameter $100{\mu}m$. Velocity distributions of blood flow for rabbit were obtained. The viscosity profiles for shear rate were found at flowing condition. To provide hemorheological characteristics of blood flow, the viscosities for shear rate were evaluated. The viscosity of blood also steeply increase by decreasing shear rate resulting in Non-Newtonian flow, especially in low shear rate region caused by RBC rheological properties. The results show typical characteristics of Non-Newtonian characteristics from the results of velocity profile and viscosity for blood flow. From the inflection points, cell free layer and two-phase flow consisted with plasma and suspensions including RBCs can be separated.
The effects of acoustic excitation of coaxial air on mixing enhancement and reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission were investigated. A compression driver was attached to the coaxial air supply tube to impose excitation. Measurements of NOx emission with frequency sweeping were performed to observe the trend of NOx emission according to the fuel and air flow conditions and to inquire about the effective excitation frequency for reducing NOx. Then, Schlieren photographs were taken to visualize the flow field and to study the effect of excitation. In addition, phase-locked particle image velocimetry (PIV) was performed to acquire velocity field for each case and to investigate the effect of vortices more clearly. Direct photographs and OH chemiluminescence photographs were taken to study the variation of flame length and reaction zone. It was found that acoustic forcing frequencies close to the resonance frequencies of coaxial air supply tube could reduce NOx emission. This NOx reduction was influenced by mixing enhancement due to large-scale vortices formed by fluctuation of coaxial air jet velocity.

The objective of this study is to investigate characteristics of flow by the Rod shape and the choice of the turbulent intensity enhancement section. The Rod was setup vertically to the way of a nozzle exit flow and nozzle diameter is 17mm. Rod height is 5mm and its shapes are square, triangle, and circle. Characteristics of fluid such as velocity vector distribution, kinetic energy, turbulent intensity, and etc. were visualized, observed, and considered at 3 kinds of Re No. such as 2000, 3000, and 4000. The characteristics of flow field were investigated in each case of the distance rate from the nozzle exit to impinging plate(H/B=8, 10). The temperature of water is $20^{\circ}E$ and the measurement region divided by 3 sections(I, II, III). The nozzle diameter is 17mm. As the experimental result by PIV measurement, scale of the vector profile showed a tendency to an unbalance parabola distribution as increasing of the Re No. When the impinging plates such as square, triangle, and circle shape are installed respectively in front of the flow accelerated, rod shape of the highest velocity vector is circle shape and rod shape of the highest turbulent Intensity is square shape.

The effect of unattached valve leaflet on flow field downstream of a floating and flapping polyurethane heart valve prosthesis was investigated. With a triggering system and a time-delay circuit the instantaneous velocity field downstream of the valve was measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV) in conjunction with the opening posture of a flexible valve leaflet during a cardiac cycle. Reynolds shear stress distribution was calculated from the velocity fields and wall shear stress was directly measured by hot-film anemometry (HFA). The floating motion of the valve leaflet resulted in the reduction of pressure drop and recirculating flow region downstream of the valve.
The authors have reported significant reductions in particulate emissions of diesel engines by generating strong turbulence during the combustion process. This study aims to identify optimum conditions of turbulent mixing for effective soot reduction during combustion. The experiments were conducted with a constant volume combustion vessel equipped with abet-generating cell, in which a small amount of fuel is injected during the combustion of the main spray. The jet of burned gas from the cell impinges the main flame, causing changes In the mixing of fuel and air. Observation was made for a variety combinations of distances between spray nozzle and Jet orifice at different directions of impingement. It Is shown that compared with the case without Jet flame soot decreases when the jet impinges. When the jet is very close to the flame, it penetrates the soot cloud and causes little mixing. There were no apparent differences in the combustion duration when the direction of impingement was varied, although the mechanisms of soot reduction seemed different. An analysis of local turbulent flews with PIV (Particle image Velocimetry) showed the relationship between the scale of the turbulence and the size of the soot cloud.

In the present experiments, vortical structures behind the hydrofoil trailing edge are visualized and analyzed as an elementary study for propeller singing phenomena. Two sorts of hydrofoil are selected for the measurement of shedding vortices. One was KH45 hydrofoil section and the other is KH45 with the truncated trailing edge that is positioned at X/C = 0.9523(C=chord length). Assuming the Strouhal number of 0.23, the shedding frequencies of vortices are extracted by analyzing the boundary layer thickness and the flow speed. The frequency distribution of shedding vortices is obtained with the variation of angle-of-attack while the flow speed is fixed to 8m/s. The truncation of the trailing edge makes the frequency of shedding vortices about 120Hz lower than that of original trailing edge and makes the vorticity value higher than the original trailing edge.
Experimental investigations were conducted to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. Swirl angle measurements were performed using a flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid for Re=60,00080,000. Using the two-dimensional particle image velocimetry method, we found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensities in water with swirl for Re=20,000, 30,000, and 40,000 along longitudinal sections. Neutral points occurred for equal axial velocity at y/(R-r)=0.70.75, and the highest axial velocity was recorded near y/(R-r)=0.9. Negative axial velocity was observed near the convex tube along X/(D-d)=3~23. Another experimental study was performed to investigate heat transfer characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. Static pressure, and local flow temperature were measured using tangential inlet condition and the friction factors and Nusselt number were calculated for several Reynolds numbers.
