  • This study proposed a reactive power variation (RPV) method equipped with positive feedback (PF) for detecting the islanding operation of distributed generation systems. The proposed RPV consists of the constant reactive power component and a certain reactive power term and uses the frequency deviation between the rated and the measured frequencies. The constant reactive power is injected from distributed generation system and power factor is to 0.9975 in grid-connected operation. PF is activated from generation of the frequency deviation and the injected reactive power is continuously increased due to PF when islanding occurs. Consequently, the increasing reactive power causes the point of common coupling frequency to deviate from the maximum/minimum threshold level. Performance of the proposed RPV is verified in a 1.7 kW T-type inverter, and the detection times are 53 and 150 ms.

  • This study compared the physicochemical properties of edible insect oils from silkworm (Bombyx mori) pupa (SP), sago palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) larva (PW), and bamboo caterpillar (Omphisa fuscidentalis; BC) to oils from chicken skin (CK), beef back fat (BF), pork back fat (PF), salmon belly (SB), sea bass belly (BB), coconut (C), and peanut (P). The fatty acid profiles and thermal behaviors (crystallization and melting) of the extracted oils were evaluated. PW and BC oils had more saturated fatty acids (SFAs) than CK, PF, SB, BB, and P oils. SP oil had equivalent SFA content to CK and BB oils. Insect oils exhibited similar monounsaturated fatty acid concentrations in all samples, except C oils. PW and BC oils exhibited a higher content of palmitoleic acid than the other oils. SP oils contained polyunsaturated fatty acids similar to those in SB and BB oils, which were higher than those in PW, BC, CK, BF, and PF oils. SP oil also exhibited the highest concentration of α-linolenic acid (C18:3 n-3). Arachidonic acid (0.01-0.02 g/100 g) in all insect oils was lower level compared to CK, BF, PF, SB, and BB oils. SP oil (0.03 g/100 g) exhibited a slightly higher level of eicosapentaenoic acid compared to PW (0.01 g/100 g) and BC (0.01 g/100 g) oils. The insect oils were liquid at ambient temperature, solid below -15℃, and required less energy (∆Hm-max) for melting than other samples. This study indicated that insects, particularly SP, could serve as an alternative source of fat to meet its growing demand.

  • Persicaria orientalis (L.) Spach (Po) and Potentilla fragarioides var. major Maxim (Pf) extracts were analyzed to investigate anti-inflammation through their suppressing effects on free radicals such as reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, with regard to Po and Pf, an analysis was conducted of their inhibitory effect on nitric oxide, which is produced in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells, and their inhibitory effect on the translocation of the nucleus of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-${\kappa}B$). The $IC_{50}$ value of ROS, which was induced by $50{\mu}M$ 3-morpholinosydnonimine hydrochloride (SIN-1), was found to be $23.35{\pm}1.27{\mu}g/mL$ due to the effect of the Po extract, and $8.46{\pm}1.22{\mu}g/mL$ due to the effect of the Pf extract. In addition, the $IC_{50}$ value of peroxynitrite treated with the Po extract was $2.19{\pm}0.04{\mu}g/mL$, whereas that of peroxynitrite treated with the Pf extract was $0.80{\pm}0.02{\mu}g/mL$. ROS and peroxynitrite were induced by $50{\mu}M$ 3-morpholinosydnonimine hydrochloride. There was an increase in the amount of nitric oxide in the RAW 264.7 cells treated with LPS ($1{\mu}g/mL$), whereas the level of NO was observed to significantly and dose-dependently decrease in the cells treated with Po and Pf. The amount of nitric oxide produced by the group treated with $10{\mu}g/mL$ of the Pf extract was $11.45{\pm}0.57{\mu}M$. Furthermore, the Po extracts inhibited the translocation of the nucleus of NF-${\kappa}B$ in LPS-treated RAW 264.7 cells. Therefore, it is highly possible that Po and Pf have anti-inflammatory properties.

  • In this paper, an analysis of power losses for the three-level T-type and neutral-point clamped (NPC) PWM inverters is presented, in which the conduction and switching losses of semiconductor devices of the inverters are taken into account. In the inverter operation, the conduction loss depends on the modulation index (MI) and power factor (PF), whereas the switching loss depends on the switching frequency. Power losses for the T-type and NPC inverters are analyzed and calculated at the different operating points of MI, PF and the switching frequency, in which the four different models of semiconductor devices are adopted. In the case of lower MI, the NPC-type is more efficient than the T-type, and vice versa. The validity of the power loss analysis has been verified by the simulation results.

  • In this study, we analyzed two components, sulforaphane and PF-3758309 to prove that the mixed composition of them has more effective antioxidant and whitening functions compared to each component. We analyzed the cellular toxicity of each component and also the mixed composition to find the safe concentration level for cell viability. From the single component treatment, we discovered that sulforaphane was safe up to $10{\mu}M$, and PF-3758309 up to 100 nM. Combination treatment of $10{\mu}M$ sulforaphane and 1 nM PF-3758309 did not affect the cell viability. The LPS-stimulated NO generation was significantly reduced by the mixed composition of sulforaphane and PF-3758309. Melanogenesis by ${\alpha}$-melanocyte stimulating hormone (${\alpha}$-MSH) was also inhibited by the mixed composition. In order to confirm the possibility as the cosmetic material, we carried out clinical studies for the mixed composition samples. Skin safety evaluation using patch test was judged to be unstimulated, skin whitening effect was increased, and melanin deposition was suppressed by treatment of mixed composition samples. These results provide us with the opportunity for applying it into the development of new functional cosmetics.

  • Background: The MLA is supported by both the abductor hallucis (ABH) and the extrinsic muscles. Insufficient muscular support may lower the MLA when the body's weight is applied to the foot. The short foot exercise (SFE) is effective in increasing the height of the MLA for people with flat feet. Most of the research related to the SFE has simply evaluated the efficiency of the exercise using enhanced ABH electromyography (EMG) activation. Since the tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus longus (PER), and ABH are all involved in supporting the MLA, a new experiment design examining the EMG of the selected muscles during SFE should be applied to clarify its effect. Objects: Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the effect of the SFE in different ankle position on the MLA angle and the activation of both the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles and to determine the optimal position. Methods: 20 healthy subjects and 12 subjects with flat feet were recruited from Yonsei University. The surface EMG and camera were used to collect muscle activation amplitude of TA, PER, and ABH and to capture the image of MLA angle during SFE. The subjects performed the SFE while sitting in three different ankle positions-neutral (N), dorsiflexion (DF) at 30 degrees, and plantar flexion (PF) at 30 degrees. Results: ABH EMG amplitudes were significantly greater in N and DF than in PF (p<.05). Muscle activation ratio of TA to ABH was the lowest in PF (p<.05). MLA angle in both groups significantly decreased in PF (p<.01). The TA and ABH was activated at the highest level in DF. However, in PF, subjects significantly activated the ABH and PER with relatively low activation of TA. Conclusion: Therefore, researchers need to discuss which SFE condition most effectively use the arch support muscle for flat foot.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effect of the diets supplemented with lard or prilled fat ($Carolac^{(R)}$) on lactation performance, plasma constituents and ruminal characteristics of Holstein cows under a warm climate. In trial 1, 18 Holstein cows, 14 primiparas at 43 DIM and 4 multiparas at 55 DIM, were randomly assigned into six $3{\times3}$ Latin squares, in which three dietary treatments were isoproteinous but varying in energy contents and three 21 d periods. The treatments were basal diet (Control), basal diet supplemented with 2.5% lard (LD), and basal diet supplemented with 2.5% commercial Prilled fat (PF). In trial 2, three rumen canulated pregnant nonlactating Holstein cows with 550 kg average body weight were allotted into a $3{\times}3$ Latin square design with diets same as in trial 1 were fed to the cows at the level of 1.5% body weight on dry matter (DM) basis. The results indicated that the DM intake did not differ among the treatments. Milk yield and 4% FCM yield were greater (p<0.05) in PF than in Control. LD and PF resulted in greater milk fat percentage. Protein, lactose and solid contents in milk were not different among the three dietary treatments. The concentration of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) in plasma was significantly greater in LD and PF than that in Control. However, the concentrations of triglycerides, urea nitrogen, and cholesterol in plasma were not significantly different among the three treatments. Although the ruminal molar percentage of isobutyrate in LD and PF was greater, no significant difference was observed in ruminal pH, NH3-N concentration and VFA production among the three treatments. Diet supplemented with fat can improve milk yield and milk fat percentage without resulting in disadvantages of ruminal characteristics in cows at early lactation and under warm climate.

  • Background: There is evidence that platelet is activated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and activated platelet with injured endothelium contribute to the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension, prognostic factor of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. So, we have investigated platelet function further in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and effect of platelet activation on pulmonary hypertension. Method: We studied platelet aggregation ratio and alpha-granule products such as platelet factor 4(PF4) and beta-thromboglobulin (${\beta}$-TG) in control subjects and COPD without and with pulmonary hypertension subjects. Result: 1) The platelet aggregation ratio (PAR) was $0.99{\pm}0.04$ in control subjects, $0.98{\pm}0.05$ in COPD without pulmonary hypertension subjects and $0.89{\pm}0.08$ in COPD with pulmonary hypertension subjects. The platelet aggregation ratio of COPD subjects was tend to decrease than that of control subjects and the ratio of COPD with pulmonary hypertension subjects was significantly lower than that of control subjects. 2) The platelet factor 4 (PF4, IU/ml) was $4.7{\pm}1.2$ in control subjects, $18.6{\pm}4.9$ in COPD without pulmonary hypertension subjects and $57.2{\pm}12.7$ in COPD with pulmonary hypertension subjects. The level of COPD subjects was significantly higher than that of control subjects and the level of COPD with pulmonary hypertension subjects was significantly higher than that of COPD without pulmonary hypertension subjects. 3) The beta-thromboglobulin (${\beta}$-TG, IU/ml) was $34.4{\pm}5.8$ in control subjects, $80.4{\pm}18.1$ in COPD without pulmonary hypertension subjects and $93.0{\pm}14.0$ in COPD with pulmonary hypertension subjects. The level of COPD subjects was significantly higher than that of conrtrol subjects and the level of COPD with pulmonary hypertension subjects was tend to increase than that of COPD without pulmonary hypertension subjects. 4) There was no correlation between the clinical parameters and PAR, PF4 and ${\beta}$-TG but there was significant correlation among PAR, PF4 and ${\beta}$-TG. Conclusion: The platelet is activated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the platelet of COPD with pulmonary hypertension is tend to be activated more than that of COPD without pulmonary hypertension. So, activated platelet may involve in the pathogenesis and maintenance of pulmonary hypertension in COPD subjects and modulation of platelet activity that might reduce pulmonary hypertension needs to be determined.

  • Mammalian cell cultures have been used extensively to produce proteins for therapeutic agent because of their ability to perform post-translational modification including glycosylation. To produce recombinant protein, many factors and parameter are considered such as media composition, host cell type, and culture process. In this study, recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) producing cell line was established by using glutamine synthetase system. To reduce serum concentration in media, we compared direct adaptation with step adaptation. Cell growth was faster in step adaptation. In low-level serum media, there were insufficient glucose for cell growth. Thus, we added glucose in low-level serum media from 2 g/L to 4.5 g/L. Titer of rhEPO was higher than other conditions at 4.5 g/L of glucose. Additionally, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), 13-cis-retinal, and pluronic F-68 (PF-68) were added to enhance productivity in CHO cell cultures. In conclusion, we applied CHO cell producing rhEPO to low-level of serum in media using step-adaptation. Also, we confirmed positive effect of NMDA, 13-cis-retinal, and PF-68.

  • A feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of a live yeast, Pichia farinosa culture(PF), on the production performance and intestinal microflora in laying hens. One hundred and sixty ISA Brown layers, 21 weeks of age, were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments, with four replicates per treatment. Dietary treatments consisted of four levels (0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5%) of PF added to a com-soybean meal based diet. Egg production, egg weight, feed intake and fred conversion ratio(FCR) were measured. Egg qualifies were examined at 25th and 29th weeks of age. A metabolism trial was conducted following the feeding trial, during which intestinal microflora, nutrient digestibility and fecal NH3 gas emission were measured. Egg production of birds fed 0.1 and 0.3% PF were significantly higher than those from birds fed 0 and 0.5% PF(P<0.05). Daily egg mass of 0.3% PF increased significantly compared to that of 0% PF. There was no difference in egg weight among all treatments. Feed conversion ratio was significantly improved as the PF level increased. No significant difference was found in eggshell quality and Haugh unit at both 25 and 29 weeks of age. Viable count of ileal Lactobacillus spp. increased significantly as the rf level increased. However, the total number of yeast and anaerobes in ileum were similar among all treatments. Cecal Lactobacillus spp. and yeast counts showed no difference among all treatments. Fecal NH$_{3}$ gas emission of layers fed PF decreased significantly by the PF supplementation. From the result of this experiment, it could be concluded that dietary supplementation of the live yeast Pichia farinosa improves the laying performance and decreases the fecal ammonia gas emission.
